  1. HUH??? Autism is NOT a mental condition. Using a term such as that when describing a Pervasive Developmental Disorder is a mis-characterization of the issues involved with that Dx. Autism, or the other "spectrum disorders", are NOT psychological disorders. But, the implied message is there when you use a term such as mental condition while discussing...
  2. Carla, You took the words right out of my mouth!!! "Aint nothing like the real thing baby..." With my first pregnancy I had awful "cramping and lower back pain" at 27 weeks. I was still teaching and could barely walk at times. The cramps were uncomfortable and it felt like someone was digging the heel of their shoe in my back. I started to spot...
  3. I feel your pain. Back in March when we took Zachary to have the Celiac panel drawn, the lab "forgot" to draw 2 of the 5 labs. We didn't find this out until an entire month later and the ONLY reason we found this out is because I became the lab's worst nightmare. I called constantly to get the results for the other two labs and became relentless when...
  4. Both of my kids were preemies and delivered via emergency c-sections. Medically, you are considered to be full-term at 37 weeks. My son, who is almost 3 1/2 was a full 8 weeks premature. My daughter, who is now 20 months, was 5 weeks preemature. I went into pre-term labor with both pregnancies. With Zachary I was approx 50% effaced at 27 weeks...yikes...
  5. Vincent- **I couldn't agree with you more!! That was my whole point with stating that AD/HD is overly and inappropriately Dx in my first post about this. But it should not be forgotten that it's a very real Dx. Too many people also think that taking herbal supplements or making dietary changes will "cure" their child. AD/HD is a diagnosable disorder...
  6. Medication can certainly change the child's personality. However, there are many types of medications available to address the issues with AD/HD and, as with any type of med, some are not for everyone. There are side effects to AD/HD meds such as decrease in appetite, headaches, change in behav, etc. You may have to try different meds until you find the...
  7. Hi! I have LOTS of experience with AD/HD as a mom, a sister and a self-contained special ed teacher. I taught special ed for 7 years prior to staying home with my kids, my youngest brother has ADD and is dyslexic but wasn't Dx until he was in his early 20's, and my 3 1/2 year-old son definately has ADD but is too young to be Dx...attention and distractibility...
  8. I was more afraid of having an IV than being in labor...honest to God! No one can ever find my veins and my hand or arm is always swollen and killing me before, during and after. It usually takes a few sticks and different nurses b/f they can run the IV...yuck! I'm making a face just thingking about it!
  9. All of the Apple & Eve juices are gluten-free. My kids love their apple juice (big bird juice) and the berry juice (ernie and bert juice). They also have grape (grover) and a tangerine blend (zoe).
  10. My kiddos are 3 1/2 and 19 months. Even being this young they had a blast. We grabbed a pamphlet on Dutch Wonderland; it looked neat. We only went overnight this year so we didn't have time to check it out. We also did Hershey Gardens and The Children's Garden which were beautiful. Next year we're gonna definately do a long (4-day) weekend. We're only...
  11. My son wasn't potty trained either when we did the Enterolab testing. No, the diaper doesn't skew the results. You need to collect at least 1c for the the stool sample. The Enterolab kit comes with directions. Good luck!
  12. We took the kids to Hershey Park last Thursday and Friday; it was a blast. It's very different from when I was a kid...I'm 36! They still give you lots of Hershey chocolate which is always a plus!! We stayed at the Hershey Lodge which was very nice; we plan on going back next year. When we got there, I spoke to the concierge (sp?) regarding Zachary...
  13. You are correct...Enterolab does not Dx Celiac Disease! It will tell you if you have an active dietary gluten sensitivity, an auto-immune reaction to gluten and if there's malabsorption. The gene testing does not Dx Celiac, either. It indicates what type of genetic markers, if any, you are carrying. My son does have an active gluten sensitivity...
  14. I hope you're doing alright. I know how stressful and heartbreaking all of this can be. I also had trouble producing milk with my son. In fact, my milk never came in with him. The nurses and lactation consultants felt that my body couldn't produce milk due to the tremendous amount of stress. I agreed. However, my milk did come in with my daughter (ouch...
  15. I can't imagine that the diaper lining is creating the foul odor. My son's poop was pale, wet and had the most god-awful, foul smell to it when he was still on gluten. If your kids have had Rotavirus that's the closest example I have for a comparison; it would practically take our breath away. We've had him on a gluten-free diet since March and he's a...
  16. Don't beat yourself up over it...mistakes happen. You did everything you could; it sounds like there was a communication barrier. We unknowingly gave our son gluten for an entire week by giving him Apple-Cinn Quaker Ricecake mini's. His poops became gross again and his behavior was just awful until we realized that the cross-contamination was what the...
  17. Play-doh does contain wheat. So if your child puts some in their mouth or puts their fingers in their mouth while they're playing with it, they will be getting gluten. The Crayola Modeling Clay is gluten free. It's not quite as mushy as the Play-Doh, but my 3 year old son has fun with it just the same. You can use cookie cutters and stuff with it.
  18. My son's preschool has been absolutely wonderful about following the gluten-free diet; we've never submitted anything from the doctor. He had neg. labs and we wouldn't put him through biopsy due to his age. BUT, he had an amazing dietary response so the proof was in the gluten-free pudding! My pediatrician agreed to call Zachary's obvious issue with...
  19. Oh, You poor thing...how infuriating!! You little guy does in fact have Celiac with a positive biopsy despite what the doctor says. I hope when you talk to him, or when your ped does, you get some answers! If it makes you feel any better, we took our son to a "highly respected" ped gi in NJ who told us Zachary was "just fine" after we explained...
  20. Find another doctor!! Blunting is blunting!!! OMG!!! I've never heard of anything more ridiculous than that!! (Well, acutally I have, but that's another story...) I'm sorry you're getting the run around from your doctor...how frustrating! It's so easy for them to tell us as parents to give our kids something that we know will cause discomfort and essentially...
  21. I spoke to my OB this week, and he is sending me an Rx for a Celiac panel. He is wonderful. He is the only reason my two kids (and me!!) are okay. I'm also ordering the gene testing kit from Enterolab to see if I am the one who passed the Celiac gene to Zachary. If I didn't, my pregnancy fiascos will still be a mystery! Unfortunately, it's probably too...
  22. We're taking the kids to Hershey in two weeks. I spoke at length to one of their dining customer service reps and you can eat gluten-free while you're there. If you go on the Hershey website and call the 800 number for dining information, they will put you through to the head chef to discuss your dietary needs. He did call me back after I left him a message...
  23. I never even thought about gluten and/orCeliac being an issue for me until June when Zachary's lab results were pos for a main Celiac gene and a gluten sensitivity gene. After my girlfriend sent me the Good House Keeping article I started to wonder if there was in fact a connection. NONE of the tests that I had after my first pregnancy indicated anything...
  24. Amen to that! That's the soapbox I've been standing on for the last year in regards to my son. So, should we have waited until my 3 y/o son had full-blown Celiac Disease and intestinal damage, among other things, before we started him on a gluten-free diet?? I've never heard of anything more ridiculous than this. You need to have severe intestinal damage...
  25. Isn't it a great feeling to have proof you're not out of your mind??!! But seriously, it's good to know that your son does have the gluten sensitivity genes. So, if you haven't already done so, you can put him on a gluten-free diet. Did you do the stool sample as well to test for an auto-immune response and malabsorption? My 3 year old son is extremely...
