ARCHIVED How To Handle Snacks Handed Out After Baseball Games
wonkabar replied to johalex's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son started pre-scool a few weeks ago. I've been very upfront with anyone who is involved with him regarding his major issues with gluten and giving them my Gluten Intolerance/Celiac Disease mini-lesson. Everyone has been supportive and understanding. I've provided a bag full of different gluten-free snacks for him to choose from at school. They include... -
Hi! My 3 year old son has been on a gluten-free diet since March and is doing soooooooo well on it! We couldn't be happier. I know that he's 100% gluten-free in terms of food and "products". I call whoever I need to. If I'm not sure about something I simply won't use it; the alternative isn't pleasant for any of us! The only thing I know isn't...

ARCHIVED Hindsight 20/20? Any Advice For The 6 Months Before You Got Preggers?
wonkabar replied to tiffjake's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Folic Acid is essential PRIOR to conceiving. You should start taking your pre-natal vitamins NOW. The amount of Folic Acid in your pre-nates is sufficient. I was on prenates 3 or 4 months before we tried to conceive. Karen is 150% correct; the embryo is in full-swing developmentally before you even know you're pregnant! An insufficient amount of folic... -

ARCHIVED Enterolab Testing And Then What?
wonkabar replied to wonkabar's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Zachary isn't potty trained yet...he's in total denial! The instructions said when you collect from a diaper it needs to be at least a 1/2 cup for the specimen. For what this test costs, I didn't want to "limit" the specimen I sent back. Thanks for the input! I am POSITIVE my son has problems with gluten. I'd really like to know if it is infact... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Testing And Then What?
wonkabar replied to wonkabar's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
THANK YOU for responding!! I'm not at all put off by your answer. My doctor has been very supportive of the gluten-free diet and the results I've reported to him. His spin on it is "if it's not broken, don't fix it!"...if my son is doing so well on the diet keep him on it. He also feels that the anecdotal information is important despite the fact that... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Testing And Then What?
wonkabar replied to wonkabar's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Can someone pleasssseeee give me some feedback about Enterolab?? I don't want to foolishly spend $400 on a test from a company that may not be reputable. Why might the doctors frown upon the results from them?? Thanks!! --Kristy -
ARCHIVED Trouble With Soy Anyone?
wonkabar replied to wonkabar's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We stopped giving Zachary soy last week after a week of icky poops. We also found out last week that he has a very mild allergy to soy which is probably manifesting itself that way. We've switched to Lactaid which has definately helped. His poops are almost back to normal again, and there's no change in his behavior. I guess it is the lactose that's bothering... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Testing And Then What?
wonkabar replied to wonkabar's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks...I think!?!? My goal was to get an appropriate Dx for my son, if possible, before I just moved on.. Can anyone tell me what the two tests were that the lab forgot and what they would've indicated? (see above) Also, is there a problem with Enterolab? I've read many posts about it (most with positive test results but a couple about negative test... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Testing And Then What?
wonkabar posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi! On Thursday, I ordered the Enterolab stool and gene testing kit for my 3 year old son. He, at the very least, has a gluten intolerance. He's shown classic symptoms of Celiac since he was about 18 months old. He's been on a gluten-free diet since March 8 with an awesome response to the diet both from a GI standpoint and behaviorally! We've only... -
CONGRATS!!! When are you expecting?? You hit some of the stuff you shouldn't have.. Here are a few more... Aspartame (Splenda is okay), certain fish because of the mercury level (tile fish, tuna, mackerel and one other I don't remember) , you should really only do canned tuna fish once a week because of the mercury levels, NO Motrin (Tylenol...

ARCHIVED House Tv Show Will Feature Celiac Disease
wonkabar replied to irish's topic in Publications & Publicity
We've done just that. My ped is wonderful, but ped GI is not his area of specialty. He's 100% supportive of following a gluten-free diet, but not willing to Dx Zachary with celiac disease---he's comfortable going with calling it a gluten intolerance at the moment. At least he's recognizing my efforts and their subsequent results!! My son's blood work was... -
ARCHIVED House Tv Show Will Feature Celiac Disease
wonkabar replied to irish's topic in Publications & Publicity
I'm usually not a part of this forum, but I was compelled to jump in. I'm sooooooooo happy that the words "Celiac Disease" and "gluten" were thrown out on national tv on a program as popular as House!!!Even though my 3 year old son has had the classic symptoms of Celiac since since he was about a year and a half old and has had an amazing dietary response... -
ARCHIVED Triple Paste For Diaper Rash
wonkabar posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I just read the thread about awful diaper rashes and wanted to start this as a new topic so other people who haven't read the thread would know about Triple Paste. My son had horrendous diaper rashes...his little butt was bloody and blistered, it often looked redish-purple like a chemical burn and took forever (if ever) to clear up. My poor little guy... -
ARCHIVED A Mom Needs Help Here.....
wonkabar replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Me again...I checked out ingredients in some of the stuff I listed, and it looks like these particular items should meet your needs. Also, if you go to www.welshirefarms.com you can plug in the allergens you're avoiding and they'll list the products they have to meet those needs. Best of luck with your little guys! --Kristy *Van's Wafffles *Terra... -
ARCHIVED A Mom Needs Help Here.....
wonkabar replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi! My 3 year old son has had tremendous success on a gluten-free diet without any type of formal Dx. Once you get into a groove with gluten free foods, it's not as bad as it seems. It's like learning a foreign language. Although I've done far better with this than Spanish, but that's another story! My daughter is 17 months and eats most of this this... -
ARCHIVED Trouble With Behavior?
wonkabar replied to Nic's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
How old is your little guy? My son just turned 3. We started him on a gluten-free diet at the begining of March. His behavior is just awful if he has gluten. We made the mistake of giving him quaker rice cake minis........WOW did we have a wild week. He had the mother-of-all-tantrums in Target (can you say mortified??), and we had to leave Applebee... -
ARCHIVED Trouble With Soy Anyone?
wonkabar replied to wonkabar's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
He definitely doesn't have any GI distress...the only time he's ever had solid poops was when we took him off gluten but stayed on diary! I can certainly try Lactaid and other lactose free stuff. How long should I give eliminating lactose from his diet? His behavior isn't out of control, thank God, but there sometimes seems to be irritability for no... -
ARCHIVED Trouble With Soy Anyone?
wonkabar replied to wonkabar's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thanks for the input everyone! I haven't tried just eliminating lactose. I don't want to go to the extreme of a casien free diet if I don't have to. Is it more likely that eliminating the lactose is what's actually helping him feel less irritable and calmer? Hmmm...I hadn't thought about that. He doesn't have any overt GI issues with dairy. Boy, this... -
ARCHIVED Trouble With Soy Anyone?
wonkabar posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi! I'm not sure if this belongs here because it has to do with my 3 year old son, but it's a global question. I started limiting his dairy last week; he's been gluten free since the beginning of March with tremendous success. He's not on a casein free diet; I've just switched the "major dairy" (milk, yogurt, pudding, etc.) to soy. He seems to be calmer... -

I'm so sorry to hear this. You and your family are in my thoughts. I can't even imagine how difficult this must be for you. The greatest gift we can give our kids is love; your daughter is very lucky to have you. --Kristy -
ARCHIVED Adult And Kid Symptoms...are They The Same?
wonkabar posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi! I've learned soooooooo much from this forum. Everything that I've learned about Celiac Disease and gluten sensitivities has been from either the internet or purchasing books. No medical assistance give here when it came to helping my 3 year old son. Anyway, I've read about many symptoms that adults experience such as headaches/migraines, leg cramps... -
ARCHIVED Does Any Of This Sound Familiar?
wonkabar replied to wonkabar's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
So glad you agree...that was my point exactly!! There is NO WAY that we'd even consider introducing gluten right now. I was talking about the future. He's at such a crucial stage developmentally (b/t 3 and 5), and there's no piece of bread worth jeopardizing his development. My husband and I are waiting for exactly what you said...him being able to tell... -
ARCHIVED Does Any Of This Sound Familiar?
wonkabar replied to wonkabar's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
That's my concern at the moment. We had the bloodwork done prior to going gluten-free...it came back negative. We're not willing to put him through a biopsy at this age; he's just 3. So putting him back on gluten right now would be problematic in that he just started preschool . We don't want his problems with gluten to interfere with preschool...he... -
ARCHIVED Does Any Of This Sound Familiar?
wonkabar replied to wonkabar's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Question about Dx...Zachary's ped has been extremely supportive about the dietary changes. However, he wasn't willing to Dx him with Celiac not having bloodwork or a biopsy to substantiate it. We're honestly okay with that. He's not a ped GI so that's not his area of specialty. That being said, at some point we'd like to know if Zachary does infact have...
