ARCHIVED Take This Mind Test - It Is Freaky!
Suzie-GFfamily replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
There is obviously more consistency within this group for the tool that was chosen- a hammer. This "experiment" illustrates how our minds store/organize/retrieve information- which is a branch of psychology known as cognitive psychology. A hammer is a prototypical example of a tool for the vast majority of people- and when asked to provide an example... -

ARCHIVED Concentration Problems
Suzie-GFfamily replied to Suzie-GFfamily's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Valerie, My 9 yr old had 1 pos blood test for celiac and 1 neg blood test (both were done before he went gluten free and his total serum IgA was normal). The endoscopy/biopsy was positive for celiac. He's having trouble with things if he has to make a written response to a question, especially if he needs to write more than 1 or 2 sentences. Making... -
ARCHIVED Results - Finally On Dd
Suzie-GFfamily replied to 2kids4me's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My husband, the non-celiac in our family, has Gilberts. I tried to find a link between celiac and Gilberts last year when we discovered that at least 2/3 of our children are celiac. There is celiac disease on my side of the family for sure, but I suspect it could be on my husband's side also. So far, he and his mom have tested negative. -

I remember being concerned about a similar ingredient in Bicks mustard pickles and had to call the 1-800 number- it was either mustard flour or mustard bran??? Anyway- it was gluten-free. Apparently ALL Bicks pickles are gluten-free. -

ARCHIVED Pregnancy- Down Syndrome
Suzie-GFfamily replied to Annaem's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have 3 children- 9 yrs, 6 yrs and 17 months. I had the standard triple screen test with my first, and declined it with my second because I wasn't comfortable with the false positive rate (it was too high for my comfort). However, on the 18 week ultrasound of my 2nd child there were abnormalities in some of her heart valves that were considered to be a... -
ARCHIVED Concentration Problems
Suzie-GFfamily replied to Suzie-GFfamily's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I always thought this is how I am too, and when my son started showing similar problems in school I just thought... it must be genetic! Of course, it probably is, and could be due to celiac disease in both of us. I didn't have problems finishing tests- there was always enough adrenaline for me to concentrate well in those types of situations- it was studying... -
ARCHIVED Concentration Problems
Suzie-GFfamily posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I've read that celiac disease can be associated with neurological problems, including attention deficit type problems. One of my children (plus myself too) has difficulty concentrating- especially things like written composition. They also have problems remembering to complete assigned tasks, get notes signed, return permission forms, etc. There doesn... -

ARCHIVED Need Advice
Suzie-GFfamily replied to confused's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If it was my child, I'd sit down and have a talk with him. What does your son want to do? He is the one who might cheat on the diet, or not cheat. Give him the power to make the decisions about diagnosis, this might then empower him to take control of the treatment too. Tell him you've been diagnosed with celiac disease. Celiac disease is genetic.... -

Suzie-GFfamily replied to EmilyElizabeth's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks for the links and the recipes lm ) Google is definitely my friend and I often get recipes from places like allrecipes.com- they have lots and lots of good ones, don't they? I was just curious about how someone would go about making a tomato soup from a tin of paste. Most tomato soup recipes that I'm familiar with use fresh tomoatoes (which... -
ARCHIVED Safe Brand Of Brown Rice Flour
Suzie-GFfamily replied to Yenni's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Why don't you trust Bob's Red Mill brand? Have people had problems with their gluten-free flours? We've been using Bob's brown rice, white rice, tapioca, potato, amaranth, sorghum and teff flours. I thought it would be safe because they test the product to verify that it is gluten-free. Unfortunately, I don't seem to have any noticeable reactions to... -
ARCHIVED 'new York Style' Foldable Pizza Crust
Suzie-GFfamily replied to hangininthere's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
A tip that I read in Karen Robertson's cookbook "Cooking Gluten-Free" was to place your hand inside a clean, plastic bag. This makes it easier to spread the pizza dough because it doesn't stick as much to the bag. You can put a little oil on the outside of the plastic bag if necessary. Suzie -
ARCHIVED Rash? Is It Dh?
Suzie-GFfamily replied to janelyb's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Those pictures look just like my daughter's rash (she is 17 months). We found out about our family having celiac disease last spring- just a month or two before she started solids. We decided to keep gluten out of her diet- so she has never been fed any food with gluten (well maybe she was cc'ed a couple of times before her big brother and big sister... -
ARCHIVED Newbie-43 With Osteoporosis
Suzie-GFfamily replied to Suzysliw's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You have osteoporosis and you are only 43- everything is not OK. If the results for the tests are normal, insist that they keep looking for a cause. If they haven't done a total serum IgA ask for it. Some celiacs are IgA deficient and this will cause a false negative on the celiac blood screening test. -
ARCHIVED Antigliadin Abs, Igg
Suzie-GFfamily replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sorry- I just noticed that the subject of your post said that it was antigliadin IgG. This is not considered to be a good indicator for celiac disease- you should get a copy of Dr. Peter Green's book "Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic" because he discusses the different blood tests. I believe that anti-tissue transglutaminase would be a better indicator... -
ARCHIVED Antigliadin Abs, Igg

ARCHIVED Newbie-43 With Osteoporosis
Suzie-GFfamily replied to Suzysliw's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If celiac disease is the underlying cause of the reduced bone density, there may be an elevation of PTH due to secondary hyperparathyroidism. This is different from primary hyperparathyroidism- in which the glands oversecrete PTH because there is a problem with the parathyroid glands themselves. Secondary hyperparathyroidism should resolve once the... -
