olalisa replied to olalisa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
hey THANKS! We do have fun....that's me and my two kids , and we SHOULD write a song about celiac disease....I'll keep ya posted! Meantime, my cell phone is looking more appetizing all the time.... -
Great advice, everybody! I feel much better now, and I do plan to take back up food as well as try to make my own or at least oversee what I can. That part will be more problematic since she cooks while we do our work, but I may just have to excuse myself from the meetings a few times. You guys are FABULOUS! THANKS

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Tried A Colon Cleanse Product ?
olalisa replied to marciab's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I wouldn't really advocate a colon cleanse, but I read that cabbage contains an amino acid that helps heal intestinal villi. I found that VERY interesting becasue for about 6 months before my diagnosis I CRAVED cabbage....I would have to stop what I was doing in the middle of the day and go buy a head of cabbage and cut it up and eat about half of it at... -
I leave friday for a weekend church board retreat. A wonderful woman (wife of a fellow board member) will be preparing all of our meals. She did this for us last year and the food was wonderful. (I wasn't diagnosed yet). She is a "martha stewart" type in the kitchen (not her personality, thankfully ) and has told me that she's going to make sure that...

ARCHIVED Rice Dream
olalisa replied to olalisa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks, everybody! I'm so glad I read that label before I drank it. Just wish I had read it before I BOUGHT it I think I'm gonna just learn from this slip-up and stick to other brands, and always read BEFORE I buy from now on. I guess we can't just assume ANYTHING is safe. oy vey. -
ARCHIVED Rice Dream
olalisa replied to olalisa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Is there another rice milk that I can buy? I had some west soy RICE milk before and I don't THINK there was anything about gluten on the package info. -
I'm confused and anxious after getting my carton of RICE DREAM rice milk home from the grocery. I noticed that it says "contains gluten from barley protien at less that 0.002%." Is this okay? Sounds like just a trace, but I've been gluten free since April 20 and I don't want to mess up now. Please help! I'm trying to avoid dairy while my gut heals.

ARCHIVED Cobblestone Pattern?
olalisa replied to Kelly J.'s topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Does anyone know what "Diffuse featureless, granular duodenal mucosa of the mucosa was noted throughout the duodenum" would mean? I quote the report exactly. Sounds like accidental repeating of words, but the "diffuse, featureless, and granular" parts? Any thoughts? -

ARCHIVED Question For Those Age 15-25... Ish
olalisa replied to lorka150's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Wow! These are ALL the questions that I have, and have been struggling with since my dx last month. The social aspect is killing me! I absolutely HATE to come off as crazy or high maintainence or on some fad diet, and I just try to downplay it in social situations, but I actually had a VERY bad experience last week with one woman in a group that I went... -
Yes, definitely get checked for scleroderma. My Mother in law had that, and "food getting stuck" was one of her first symptoms. I was looking to see if anyone else had suggested checking for that! Keep us posted.... ((((((((((((hug))))))))))

ARCHIVED Is There A Safe Drive-thru Food I Can Eat?
olalisa replied to Mabc's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
My favorite drive thru item is Chick fil a's chargrilled chicken salad. Substitute tortilla strips for the croutons. I personally like it with the Spicy dressing, but you can check the website for other gluten-free dressing choices At Taco Bell, I like the Southwest Steak bowl without any sauce. No red strips. Also, the Zesty chicken bowl WITHOUT the... -
ARCHIVED Help! Baking Disaster!
olalisa replied to olalisa's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks for the suggestions, guys! Will definitley try them... Also, the cake was VERY crumbly. Is that just the nature of gluten free baked goods, or is there a way to get the texture better? -
Help! I just tried gluten free baking for the first time, for my son's Bday. I used gluten free pantry mix. Doubled it to make 2 layers. Used butter, not shortening. Greased the pan with butter as well. The layers looked GREAT.....IN the pan. When I tried to get them out they were STUCK. When I finally got them out they fell apart. I'm trying to...

ARCHIVED Tinkyada Pasta
olalisa replied to skipper30's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I worked in a restaurant a couple of years back, and OUR RISO pasta was simply pasta that was shaped more like rice....so PLEASE double check before you eat yours! I fear that you may accidentally get glutened! Let me know! And hey....if it is indeed gluten free, let me know that, too, cuz I wanna get me some -
They are supposed to have a dedicated fryer at Chik fil a. I know of two near me where my kids' friends work, and I asked about it and they both said that they indeed use a dedicated fryer there. I personally love the chargrilled chicken salad with tortilla strips instead of croutons. But they always give me the sunflower seeds, which I can't have...

ARCHIVED So Frustrated! Help Me! Please!
olalisa replied to olalisa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks so much to everyone for your input and stories! I feel the love ! I know I'll have to get used to being more assertive, which is funny, b/c I'm usually assertive, but about this, I'm having a hard time! OY! I'm still feeling the meal I had last night, though, so that will help me to realize how important it is....you guys are so right about that... -
So for mother's day today my father-in-law (sweet, sweet man) wanted to take me and my family out to dinner at a seafood restaurant near his house. I've been diagnosed/gluten free for only 3 weeks, so eating out is VERY stressful still, esp with an "audience" so to speak. I tried to suggest chains that I know are celiac friendly, but he assured me that...

ARCHIVED How Did You Acquire Celiac?
olalisa replied to tasha's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I began having grand mal seizures at age 8, for which a cause was never determined. The seizures stopped around age 18, and I had a period of relative good health, I guess for maybe 10 years or so. I have been plagued with a touchy tummy all my life, and edema which has gotten really bad the past 10 years or so, even with meds to control it. I hemorrhaged... -
wow. I know everyone is different, but what was the timeline? How long before it came back? And did you try an elimination diet to figure out about dairy and wine? How long have you been dairy free and wine free? I'm glad you're better, by the way!

Does anyone else suffer from edema/swelling in the legs, ankles, and feet? I've suffered for over 10 years with edema and taken various meds for it, and since being diagnosed and gluten free for less than 3 weeks, the edema is RESOLVING and I'm off all the meds! Has anyone else suffered from edema as a symptom?
