  1. Can't remember if these folks make schnaps DeKuyper (www.DeKuyper.com) (ve=9-23-04) Our cordials are made with distilled spirits that are primarily made from a corn base. They may also from time to time, contain small amounts of small grains such as wheat or rye. It is known that Gluten can be found in the small grains such as rye, barley, oats, etc....
  2. If you check a Nathan's package they very, very clearly say wheat in the ingredients. Or at least it did last time I looked. It's the only hot dog I know of so far that has wheat in it. richard
  3. Virtually every distilled liquor is gluten-free, even the ones that start with wheat or rye. I'm not telling you not to check them out with the manufacturer, just that there's a WHOLE lot more out there that you can have. richard
  4. I've seen this rumor before but never seen any proof beyond somebody declaring it on a forum. Can you or anybody else provide information from a company confirming this? richard
  5. Everything right now most certainly points to celiac. The two celiac tests that your doctor did (Iga and Igg) were high. You're anemic and the symptoms fit. Do you know if there's celiac in your family? You could, of course, just assume you have celiac disease and go gluten-free, but I think if you can do the biopsy you should, particularly if you have...
  6. Most scientists who have studied DH and celiac do not believe that simply touching gluten triggers DH. Touching gluten has never triggered my DH, although I'm also not extremely sensitive. It's more likely that if you're touching gluten all day, you're accidentally getting small amounts into your mouth. I'm sure it's impossible for you to wash your hands...
  7. If you have solid reasons to believe your son might have celiac, he needs to get the blood tests. Unfortunately, it's also possible to have both. I know two people who do. richard
  8. "They stated that over 900 already have agreed to it out of aproximately 1200." I think the story said that so far 900 out of 1,200 products are gluten-free. Walmart is requiring -- not asking -- that manufacturers comply. Anyway, this is good news. I've also noticed that more and more Kroger products are listing the top eight allergens. Of course this...
  9. With compuetrization, they know a lot more than you think. richard
  10. Everything you've named is a possible symptom but not everybody has these. Everybody talks about the GI symptoms, but fatigue is the most common symptom. I had the joint and muscle pains, night sweats, fatigue, anemia, and brain fog. I also has cold sores around my mouth. But very little diarrhea. richard
  11. Life insurance really should not be a problem. My doctor, who has celiac disease himself, recently increased his coverage and when I looked into it, a broker told me that if I had a negative blood test I could get increased insurance at the regular price. Other health matters cropped so I put it on the back burner. My job provides health insurance no matter...

    ARCHIVED Rash

Although DH can appear anywhere, the stomach and legs would not be common sites, particularly the stomach. I can't remember ever having it on my stomach in 20 years. My DH looked like blisters filled with clear fluid and was EXTREMELY itchy. I never really thought of it as a rash. richard
  13. Four to six months, that's the timeframe I was trying to think of. Anyway, there's seems to be little doubt that most researchers believe that keeping a child from gluten (unless you know they have celiac disease) is more likely to trigger celiac disease once they do eat it -- and eventually they will. richard
  14. I don't know anything about the thyroid and iodized salt so I can't help you with that one. Salt, iodized or not, is gluten-free. I prefer kosher or sea salt, but that's personal. When I first went gluten-free, CSA used to warn that manufacturers "might" use flour to keep the salt flowingbut that it was "probably" OK. This was just plain dumb. Salt does...
  15. Your pediatrician is right. Celiac blood tests are not as accurate in children under 2, and before a certain age (which would be different in different children) would be completely useless. Most experts these days would say that you should allow your child to eat gluten the same time any other child would eat it. In fact, some recent research (which I...
  16. I guess the beer opinion depends on what you like. I found the Ramapo much too sweet and more like hard cider or mead than beer. I liked the Bard's and thought it tasted much more like beer. It had been almost four years for me. I don't mean this to be sexist, but generally speaking, women seem to like the Ramapo best and men seem to like the Bard's, which...
  17. Many of your symptoms are common for celiac, although everybody is different. You probably haven't been off gluten long enough to cause any problems with the tests, but you're going to need to start eating it again, as hard as that may be. Call your doctor and beg for those blood tests. richard
  18. "You have a valid complaint, and I'm thinking you're covered because of my experience with the schools. They are required to provide a gluten free meal to a child with c.d. if they're providing meals to other students." I really think you're comparing apples and oranges. Should a bakery be required to provide gluten-free desserts and breads? Should a pizza...
  19. I think it's a really stupid policy, but if they uniformly apply no substitutes to everybody, I'm not sure you have a valid complaint. I am not a lawyer; this is just my opinion. richard
  20. This is partly a matter of choice. Kaiti told you the tests to have and they certainly should have them. If a child has the gene, the symtpoms, and a parent who has celiac disease, the odds are quite high the child does or will have celiac disease. If the child has no symptoms and tests come back negative, most people choose just to watch and test again later...
  21. This is a really good idea. I've helped some local people informally and others helped me when I started. Forums are a huge help, but there's nothing like having somebody in the area you live. richard
  22. Could you tell us which tomato paste it was so we knowm which one to avoid? This would be the first tomato paste with gluten I've ever heard of. richard
  23. Tyson chicken is gluten-free and so is every major brand I know of. In the U.S., if a raw meat has wheat or barley added (rye wouldn't ever be added), it must by USDA regulations be clearly listed. Just read the ingredients. richard
  24. I'm sorry, but when somebody claims they are curing the common cold in three hours using a cotton ball... richard
  25. Because of the distilling process, virtually every liquor is gluten-free. richard
