  1. If you've been eating things with gluten all along and not paying attention to contamination then it is definitely not refractory sprue. You've never actually been gluten-free. You've probably learned your lesson, but I'll re-emphasize anyway -- never, ever put anything in your mouth unless you KNOW it's gluten-free. That means you've either got to know the...
  2. If you ate out contamination is the most likely culprit, not distilled vinegar in the msutard. richard
  3. Most rice flours are inherently gritty. richard

    ARCHIVED Fast Food

Quickest and easiet for me is to roll some sandwich meat, cheese, mustard and lettuce in a corn tortilla. I usually heat the toritlla and meat in a microwave first but it's not necessary. richard
  5. Every expert who has spoken on gluten absoprtion through the skin agrees -- gluten molecules are too large to be absorbed. You can get topical stuff in your mouth by accident, but you do NOT absorb gluten through your skin. I agree you should look for contamination possibilities. For instance, had the mayo been used for a gluten dish or sandwich, which...
  6. Don't have time to read all the posts on this one but let me re-emphasize. True refractory sprue is very, very rare. Almost all people who think they have refractory sprue are either still eating some gluten or they have bacterial overgrowth. You must get ALL gluten out of your diet and you must take some probiotics. Then go from there. richard
  7. I have never heard of a vegetable shortening with gluten. This is not an ingredient I worry about but others might feel differently. No one can give you a blanket answer on hot mustard/duck sauce. Neither one SHOULD have gluten but the only way to know is find out the manufacturer and call them. No other way to do it. richard
  8. In addition to what's already been said, your daughter will be exposed to enough gluten without cheating. If your house isn't completely gluten-free (mine isn't, so this is not a lecture or guilt trip) she will get some stray contamination there. When you eat at a restaurant there's always the chance of gluten. And many processed products that are supposed...
  9. I can't tell you what's causing the rash and burning, but it doesn't sound like DH, especially if it's pretty immediate. Have you been diagnosed with DH? In addition, allergy tests are not exactly known for their accuracy. It's always possible you have an allergy that was missed by the tests (gee, doesn't that sound familiar). richard
  10. Your child's intestines might repair that fast but if your doctor is experienced with celiac, residual damage should still be visible. You can also have positive blood tests but no visible damage, the person doing the biopsy can fail to take enough samples, or the samples that are taken miss the places where the damage happened. So a biopsy is no slam dunk...
  11. I'm not in your area, but yes, social situations become more challenging. We don't get invited over to eat as often (although our really close friends have all learned to deal with it), and the folks at the office rarely ask me out for lunch. I have to initiate it. Do you entertain? If you ask others over then you can control what's on the menu. As for...
  12. Have you gone completely gluten-free? If not, don't get pregnant until you have done so. And even if you have gone completely gluten-free, four months isn't enough time to heal completely. I'd still wait a little. The main thing is you want to make sure you are fully absorbing nutrients so that the baby is getting all it needs. The weight thing is probably...

    ARCHIVED Health Insurance

If you weren't ever diagnosed officially you can fudge about it (technically, we always have celiac or at least the condition that causes celiac; there's no cure) but if you have official results, the insurance company will see those in a medical databank. They will catch the lie. I don't know about health insurance but I know somebody who went for extra...

ARCHIVED Can My Gi Dr. Be Wrong?

As others said, if your bloodwork and biopsy were positive, you absolutely have celiac. Mine were all highly positive and I was so ill I was near death, yet when I make mistakes now (I've never cheated on purpose) I don't react. richard
  15. Doesn't sound celiac related to me. richard
  16. Never heard of sorbitol being made from wheat. Sorbitol can cause diarrhea in some people but it's gluten-free. Wheat on the skin does not cause itching even if you have DH UNLESS you are allergic as well as having celiac. Also, some types of soap and other skin products cause itching because people are reacting to other ingredients. I try to use gluten...
  17. It's not a problem for us to get blood from a person who eats gluten, just as it isn't a problem to eat meat from an animal that ate gluten. richard
  18. Iga and Igg. Not sure if Ttg is an antibody but that's another test that needs to be done. richard
  19. Three weeks isn't much time. I was starving for many, many weeks after I went gluten-free and it took several weeks for me to regain weight. Eventually I got to the point where I had to diet. richard
  20. I also think your problem is drinking but not eating. Very bad combination. I don't know of any evidence that being gluten-free or having celiac suddenly makes you get drunker. richard
  21. I can't imagine that hazelnut oil would EVER have gluten.
  22. Dr. Cynthia Rudert, one of the top celiac doctors in the country, puts ALL of her new celaic patients on probiotics just in case of bacterial overgrowth. She doesn't even look for it (it can be hard to diagnose), she just puts her patients on probiotics. Many patients who have come to her diagnosed with refractory sprue turned out to have bacterial overgrowth...
  23. Hornsby says it does not consider its hard ciders gluten-free. Woodchuck and K are, and so are some others. If you mean Blue Bell ice cream I think most are gluten-free except the obvious ones, but I would contact them to make sure before eating. richard
  24. This does sound a lot like dermatitis herpetiformis, or DH. You need to find a dermatologist who's familiar with it. Dapsone controls the outbreaks but what you really need to do is go gluten free, because if you have DH, you do or will have celiac. If you simply don't have the money for testing then your only choice is to go ahead and try the diet and...
