ARCHIVED Is Gluten Free Really Possible
jayhawkmom replied to swilliams's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It is possible. It's not easy... but it is possible. My daughter and I are gluten free. My husband and two sons are not. Here's a few things I've learned. When making dinners... always prepare the gluten free foods first. I'm thinking specifically of pasta since I made both regular and gluten-free for my kids the other night. If I don't happen... -
Tonight was my final English class for the semester. My Prof had said we could all bring "snacks" since the class would be longer than usual, and would take place over the dinner hour. I prepared myself by packing some gluten-free crackers along with the cheese/meat tray I brought to class. The only thing I ate, aside from my crackers and cheese, was...

ARCHIVED Best Value Hotel At Disney World
jayhawkmom replied to fedora's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I also LOVE the Pop Century. The accommodations were great, and the food court was AWESOME!!! For the price, it could not be beat!!! Have fun! -
ARCHIVED For Those Who Have Been To Disney World....
jayhawkmom replied to jayhawkmom's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Yep, you have to ask. They don't just randomly "advertise" the gluten-free products they have. If you are someone who needs them, however, they are very easy to come by. =) I really appreciate all the help! My paper is specifically about Disney World, in Florida, which is why I was asking about experiences from there, specifically. But, Disney ... -
ARCHIVED New gluten-free Casein Free Bakery!

$40.00 for a dozen cookies? No thanks!! -
ARCHIVED For Those Who Have Been To Disney World....
jayhawkmom replied to jayhawkmom's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! You all are a tremendous help!! I could have "made up" testimonials, but it's so much better to have real people with real experiences speaking to other members of the Celiac community. This paper is about travel, but my professor gave me permission to gear it towards "gluten free travel" since the gluten-free... -
Swedish and German here!! It's believed that there is a trace of Irish on my maternal side, but I've yet to find it. I have, however, found evidence of Scottish ancestry. I too am a "fair skinned gal" with green eyes, and dark red hair. All 3 of my kids are incredibly fair skinned. Both boys also have my green eyes, with brown hair. My daughter is...

ARCHIVED For Those Who Have Been To Disney World....
jayhawkmom replied to jayhawkmom's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
That's ok! Can I just use what you said above?? If it's ok with you, it would be great to add to my testimonials! That helps a great deal, thank you! And... the brownies.... OMGosh! I had one every day too!! They were awesome. I didn't care how much they cost, because they taste just as good as "the real thing." LOVED them!!! -
ARCHIVED For Those Who Have Been To Disney World....
jayhawkmom replied to jayhawkmom's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
No one has anything good to say about a Disney trip?? =) I find that difficult to believe. Really, I'm just posting to "bump" the topic. I know there aren't many folks logging in on the weekends, I should have waited to post this till Monday. Happy Sunday! -
I'm a bit confused. The histamine is supposed to be huge. The control is supposed to be unremarkable. If the histamine wasn't huge, it would be the sign of a flawed test. I've had intradermal allergy testing done, and my histamine was also "huge" as were those of my children. They inject histamine directly under the skin, it's *supposed* to react. ...

ARCHIVED For Those Who Have Been To Disney World....
jayhawkmom posted a topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I am writing a paper for one of my college classes and I could really use your help!! My paper is regarding travel to Disney World. Along with my paper, I have to create a tri-fold travel brochure. My brochure is going to be aimed at the Celiac community. I have a wealth of information from my recent trip to Disney World with my daughter, but I'm specifically... -
ARCHIVED Any Good Books Lately?
jayhawkmom replied to debmidge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I just finished Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain. Great book, not for kids... LOL! I started WICKED en route to a recent destination, and forgot it there. Woops. My daughter and I are going to see the musical on Mother's Day! =) I can't wait! Also recently read The Nanny Diaries, that was a guilty pleasure read. And, I'm a big Michael Crichton... -
ARCHIVED I Think My Dd Has Adhd
jayhawkmom replied to ptkds's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
That sounds a LOT like my daughter. In fact, we did put her on ADD medications for a brief time. Our "team" of doctors all agreed, if they help... she has ADD. If they don't help, she doesn't. They didn't help, really. I mean, they sure did calm her down, but she was just in a weird fog - they didn't help her in the ways that she needed to be helped.... -

ARCHIVED Do Allergies Mean It Can't Be Celiacs?
jayhawkmom replied to 3groovygirls's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yep, they still make barley baby cereal. My daughter is allergic to wheat, and she has Celiac. Much like Ursa stated, if she touches wheat... she breaks out. If she ingests it, she gets hives along with the horrible gastrointestinal stuff. It's so NOT fun. -
ARCHIVED Should I Be Scared About The Biopsy?
jayhawkmom replied to Darcie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree, try not to worry... it's really not bad at all. I was under conscious sedation for mine, but I don't remember a thing after they put the IV in. I fell asleep. LOL! It only took a few minutes, and then it took a while for me to wake up. Once I was awake, I went home and went about a totally normal day. I didn't have a sore throat at all. It... -
ARCHIVED Heartburn?
jayhawkmom replied to Donna49's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
For me, it wasn't just heartburn. It was all out reflux, which mimicked heartburn. Once I went gluten free... it went away. "Heartburn" is exactly how I know whether or not I've been cc'd. It's unmistakable. -
ARCHIVED I'm In Heaven! (product Recommendation)
jayhawkmom replied to jayhawkmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My daughter won't go near them either. The smell "offends" her. Neither of my little ones (or my big one, for that matter) will eat Sunbutter either. But, I figure... since it works for me as a PB substitute, and won't harm them - it's a really great treat for mama! =) -
ARCHIVED Mail Carrier
jayhawkmom replied to holdthegluten's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
When I was in 6th grade, I was "elected" as the Postmaster for our town, during our government days. I got to spend a good portion of my day with the actual postmaster. Then I spent some time in the mail room, but I was not allowed to go out on a route. I remember that day SO well! =) My cousin was a mail carrier for years and years... up until retirement... -
ARCHIVED I'm In Heaven! (product Recommendation)
jayhawkmom posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I love peanut butter... but two of my three are allergic. Obviously, it doesn't enter our house... EVER. I found Sunbutter several months ago, and have grown to love it. In the store on *this* website, I found Enjoy Life Sunbutter Bars and ordered some. They are AWESOME!!!! They taste like really chewy peanut butter cookies, and of course... they... -
ARCHIVED Talk Me Through This...
jayhawkmom replied to jayhawkmom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm home, and it actually went really well. I had a nice glass of wine with my meal. I dined on grilled veggies, fruit, potatoes, and ice cream. =) No one noticed a thing. Apparently, they all know my gluten-free status anyhow. I didn't realize dh discusses my dietary issues with his colleagues. Yikes. -
ARCHIVED Talk Me Through This...
jayhawkmom replied to jayhawkmom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've been gluten-free since September of 06. Though, I totally confess to having a couple periods where I went back to the "old ways" because I was lazy. I mean, there's really no other explanation. Lazy. Yea. Anyhow, yes... I do take B vitamins. I take a "Super B Complex." It does wonders with my motion sickness issues. =) Well, dh is home from work... -
ARCHIVED Called The School Because They Were Doing Paper Mache
jayhawkmom replied to holiday16's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Wow. I want to send my daughter to YOUR kiddos school!!!! She's in kindergarten and her classroom is peanut/tree nut free. (she's the allergic one) However, the other kinder classes made peanut butter birdhouses. The other kids in her class felt "cheated" because they didn't get to make them. *sigh* WHY oh WHY must they use food.... all the time? Seriously... -
ARCHIVED Positive Igg/negative Biopsy?
jayhawkmom replied to kkv's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yep. All my other tests were within range, some on the high side of "normal." My antigliadin IgG - however, was 67 - the negative reference range is less than 11. My allergist informed me that there was no reason to follow a gluten free diet. My GI - on the other hand - said it was definitely worth further investigation. Endoscopy/biopsies... -
ARCHIVED Questions About Intrepreting Weleda Statement
jayhawkmom replied to Lisa16's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have a skin condition called Rosacea. In truth, Weleda's Almond Moisturizing Cream is the ONLY moisturizing product I can use that *doesn't* cause reactions with me. In fact, it totally keeps the redness and flushing at bay, and keeps my skin incredibly soft and supple. I'd have to say it's the tree nuts!!!
