  1. Plan B is to hide in the bathroom, or fake an illness. LOL! Sounds dumb, but I'm painfully shy - as it is. I often come off as "aloof or snotty" to people who don't know me. And, I hate that. I just always have my guard up. And, to meet a bunch of "new" people in a setting in which I don't feel totally comfortable to begin with, well... is just freakin...
  2. I agree with everything Cara said. Your doctor can't FORCE you to eat wheat. If you don't want to eat it, don't eat it. I know it sounds like I'm stating the obvious... but, if a food makes you sick, regardless of what tests say... stay away from it. May I offer a weird example here?? My daughter is allergic to peanuts. She had an anaphylactic reaction...
  3. Tonight my husband and I are going out to dinner with a few of his colleagues. I've never met any of them, so I'm nervous right off the bat. To make matters a bit more.... um.... awkward for me, we are going to a local Italian Market style buffet restaurant. I've looked over the menu, and while it's true that there are pastas galore, there are also...
  4. I don't have any answers, but I'm enjoying the thread and learning from it. This situation is going to happen to us this summer. So, thanks for posting it!
  5. My children are allergic to dairy and soy intolerant. I use coconut oil a LOT!!!! Yes, there are good and bad oils. Unrefined is preferable. I also use Spectrum - Organic, Unrefined. I fry with it, saute with it, bake with it, pop popcorn with it... you get the picture. I've also used it on my skin when I've had breakouts (I have rosacea) and it...
  6. Well, it IS a pain in the butt! That's a common reason for not sticking to the diet. I am totally guilty, there. I was waiting for "proof" that I have it, even with positive bloodwork! I didn't want to believe it. I have suffered from reflux my entire life. I'm responding directly to this issue since Ursa brought it up. Once I went gluten free, the reflux...
  7. I'm a bit confused. If you were diagnosed with Celiac, why are you eating gluten? And, if not consuming gluten makes you feel better, why continue to eat it?? Another question I have is... if all tests were negative, how were you diagnosed? If you have DQ8, were diagnosed with Celiac, and experienced improvements while maintaining a gluten-free diet...
  8. First, how very nice of you to take that extra step so that the guest of honor can have some cake, and eat it too! =) Let me see if I can help. First, Cherrybrook chocolate cake is DELISH!!!! It's my fave non-homemade mix. My kids love it! In fact, for my little guys 2nd birthday, we had a cherrybrook cake and a "real" bakery cake. All the kids PREFERRED...
  9. I read this post and I think how happy I'd be if we could just rip ours out of the wall and use it for more cabinet space. *sigh* My husband, however, will not allow that... as he has a very near and dear relationship with our dishwasher. I'm afraid of them. (not literally) I wash by hand. He wants the drainer out of the 2nd bowl while I want more cabinet...
  10. I promise I'm not being a jerk when I say this but... that's why you read the labels BEFORE you eat the product. I fully admit to having made this mistake myself, which is why I'm reiterating the point.
  11. I'm not much of a beer drinker, but I tried Bards Tale at a Celiac conference. To me, it tastes like every other beer I've ever had. So, I guess that's a good thing. =) Licorice ROOT is gluten free. However, licorice candy- as already stated- usually is not.
  12. The IgA Serum is not a test for Celiac, it simply tests your IgA level, which if negative would negate the testing. However, yours in well within the normal range. If it were under 70 it would be indicative of IgA deficiency. However, your results are totally normal. The other results look like absolute negatives to ME. But, if you'd been gluten free...
  13. My 6 year old and I went to Disneyworld in February....and I was SOOOO pleased!!! We had the gluten-free pizza (which is actually Amy's pizza....and I don't care for it much) at Pinnochio's Village Haus, and the gluten-free version is twice the size of the "normal" pizzas. We had people asking us why we were "privileged" and had such large pizzas!! =)...
  14. Rice Dream has never been OK. But there are many folks here who swear by Pacific. That's too bad, everything is becoming a problem. =(
  15. Just out of curiosity... who do you see? Our daughter is also under the care of a GI in Kansas City, at Children's Mercy. Of course, we live here... so it's no big deal to travel. I just wondered if two kids from the forum are seen by the same GI. (Ours is Dr. Li - and we've also seen Dr. Roberts at CMH)
  16. Thanks for the suggestions! Moldlady... I'm hungry... not wanting to chose foods to combat anything. I just want food on my stomach, I'm afraid garlic isn't going to do the trick! I ended up eating some of my daughter's pretzels because starches really "help out" when I'm starving but not quite brave enough to eat anything else, for fear of puking! ...
  17. When I'm sick, all I want is chicken noodle soup and saltines. I'm not feeling good, at all, right now.... and I'm sooo hungry. But, I haven't a clue what in the world to eat. Are there any "ready made" chicken noodle soups on the market that are gluten free? I really can't handle making it myself...and I'm not sure I want dh cooking. (LOL!) I...
  18. Anaphylaxis is an immediate life-threatening reaction. Celiac won't kill you that fast. So, there is a major distinction to clear up the misunderstanding between Celiac symptoms and an anaphylactic allergy. Other than that... Peter hit the nail right on the head, as he always does. =)
  19. Thank you, thank you!!! So, what type of gluten-free flour is best to use to make schnitzel? Obviously... I'm way into German food right now. Ursula - I wasn't born there, but my family is German... and I just spent a few days in a lovely little German town called Hermann, in Missouri, this past week. I really wanted to eat all those yummy goodies...
  20. Has anyone successfully made Spatzle using gluten free flours? And, if so... can you tell me which ones? If anyone has a recipe to share, I'll be eternally grateful.
  21. We don't eat at Burger King either. While their fryer is dedicated, the draining baskets are not. The onion rings, which are coated in gluten, are in the same bins as the fries. They are on our "nono" list. My daughter was dx just before her 5th birthday, and we've had the same issue. She loves some things... hates others. But one of our favorite travel...
  22. I wasn't trying to make a correlation between Celiac and nut intolerance/allergies. I have a Celiac child who is allergic (flat out) to peanuts and all tree nuts, and can't tolerate ANY legumes. I've never thought her to be an "odd case" based on things I've read here, however.
  23. They sound YUMMY! I'm going to have to try this out! Thanks for posting!
  24. I filled up yesterday at $3.34. The gas prices are really hampering our plans for spring break!!!
  25. I think the two tend to go hand in hand, at least... for a while. I think the norm is that diary IS a problem while the intestines are healing, and some can reintroduce. I've been totally dairy free for a week now, and it's difficult, but I'm noticing some positive effects, finally.
