ARCHIVED Tell Me About The Gene Testing
jayhawkmom replied to jayhawkmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just to add... Dr. Peter Green also says that it's absolutely impossible to have Celiac if you don't have the genes. Yet, there are MANY folks here who DO have biopsy diagnosed celiac who do NOT have the genes. Even Fiddle-Faddle makes that statement. I've seen Dr. Green speak, I have utmost respect for him. But, I don't think he's the ONLY doctor in... -
ARCHIVED Tell Me About The Gene Testing
jayhawkmom replied to jayhawkmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thank you, Fedora. I surely didn't expect to log in and find posts telling me that I was wrong to test with Enterolab, that's for sure. I appreciate your non-critical response. I already know I'm gluten intoerlerant and I have a child with Celiac. I think Enterolabs gene testing is more than enough for me to go to my family and say explain that there... -
ARCHIVED Tell Me About The Gene Testing
jayhawkmom posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've already had the testing done, and my results are below. However, I'm having a real difficult time discussing the results with my family members, who have pretty much all decided that they don't care, one way or the other. Perhaps if I better UNDERSTOOD the results, how the gene tests work, and what (exactly) the results mean, I could be more persuasive... -
If it looks like Celiac and responds like Celiac, I'd say... it's Celiac. I am not dx'd with celiac disease - but I AM dx with gluten intolerance. That just doesn't carry the same weight, and I HAVE to be gluten free. I have to make people understand that it's not a choice. Quite personally, I don't discuss my dietary restrictions with many. And...

ARCHIVED Question About Testing For Celiacs
jayhawkmom replied to 3groovygirls's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The blood tests aren't at ALL reliable in little babies and small children. Even the most reputable Celiac specialists all agree on that. If gluten makes your baby sick, by all means... avoid it. If you feel that you must have testing done now, unless you do the genetic testing... I think you'd have to continue feeding it to her. It's a horrible ... -

ARCHIVED Cadberry Creme Eggs Not Gluten Free!
jayhawkmom replied to CeliacMom2008's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Colleen, I was referring more to those periodically published lists that say, "so and so's orange tacos are gluten free." Ya know what I mean? Those types of lists are usually outdated by the time they hit the sales floor. I know there are some great publications that give overall general advice based on time tested companies and what not. It's the... -
ARCHIVED Pei Wei Near Disney World?
jayhawkmom replied to Kara'sMom's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I can't help ya with the Pei Wei issue. But, my daughter and I stayed at the Pop Century over President's Day weekend. Make sure you talk to the chef and/or manager, and you'll have no problem eating gluten free!!! One day we had pizza, one day I had sloppy joes on gluten-free bread, lots of fruit and veggies available. And, they even had gluten free brownies... -
ARCHIVED Cadberry Creme Eggs Not Gluten Free!
jayhawkmom replied to CeliacMom2008's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Personally, I would NEVER trust something printed in a book (ie: published approved lists of "OK" foods) over the actual label on the product. And, Cadbury Cream eggs CLEARLY have the word "WHEAT" in the labels. No thanks. -
I was at Whole Foods today, and decided to grab something from the hot bar. Much to my EXTREME disappointment, the one thing I wanted looked safe, but wasn't. I am still baffled by this. They have always put the top 8 in bold, at the end of the ingredient list. However, I was going for the chicken caccitore - and saw NO obvious allergens. Thankfully, I read...

ARCHIVED Is Biopsy Painful?
jayhawkmom replied to MELINE's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It doesn't hurt at all. I was under "conscious sedation" when I had mine done. That means that I was awake, but sedated so that I didn't feel anything - and I have no real memory of anything other than my doctor saying, "Ok, lights out." And, then waking up about 45 minutes later, feeling really thirsty. The intestines have no pain receptors, so the... -
ARCHIVED It's Easier Now.... Somehow.
jayhawkmom posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Weird. I've complained about the gluten-free diet since about 3 weeks after I went on it. I admit, I've cheated - and I've figured it was ok. My blood tests, while slightly positive, weren't "enough" for proof, apparently. My biopsy was negative, according to the GI. Even though there were "issues" that could be connected to Celiac, it was determined that... -
ARCHIVED Cadbury Mini Eggs =(
jayhawkmom replied to Moongirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
SO, basically they are saying that they have absolutely no idea what types of ingredients they are putting in their candy. Wow. Uh... yea... I don't think I'll be eating Hershey's anymore, EVER! -
ARCHIVED Cadbury Mini Eggs =(
jayhawkmom replied to Moongirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Isn't it entirely TERRIFYING to think that these companies are putting "ingredients" in the foods we eat, and they have NO IDEA WHAT IS IN THEM?????????? -
ARCHIVED Going To Overland Park Kansas
jayhawkmom replied to jennyj's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The convention center is pretty much right smack in between the two stores! =) It's at 110th and Metcalf - so you would not have far to go to get to either, though... due to traffic patterns, it might be easier to get to 119th. I live closer to 91st, but when I need something like EnerG Wylde Pretzels, I'll hit Wild Oats, since WF doesn't carry them. -
ARCHIVED Did Anyone Lose A Lot Of Weight Going Gluten Free?
jayhawkmom replied to kelsey's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes. I did. But, my story is different. It appears that my 3rd pregnancy was my "trigger" and once my baby was born, I lost nothing. I could not lose weight no matter how hard I tried. And, since I was breastfeeding, I had to treat lightly on the whole "diet" issue. Once I stopped nursing, the pounds still would not move. I could have starved myself... -
ARCHIVED Cadbury Mini Eggs =(
jayhawkmom replied to Moongirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'd trust them on that one. Especially since, for whatever reason, they added WHEAT to the Cadbury Cream Eggs. Shame on Hershey. -
I read, recently, that most of the traditional sit down breakfast places, Friendy's included, add pancake batter to their eggs to make them fluffy. My home-town has a friendly's and it's where "everyone" goes on Sunday morning. Thus far, I've avoided breakfasts there. I'm not sure I'd eat anything there, other than their ice cream. (And that would have...

ARCHIVED Going To Overland Park Kansas
jayhawkmom replied to jennyj's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I live in Overland Park, and I'm not familiar with a 2nd Whole Foods. There is one listed at 119th Street, but it's actually a Whole Foods owned Wild Oats. The one on 91st Street is where we do all our grocery shopping. Isle 4 has a "gluten free" section. And, there is also a freezer dedicated to gluten-free foods - but it's almost all Whole Foods Bakehouse... -
ARCHIVED Dairy-free & Soy-free Butter / Margarine
jayhawkmom replied to ive's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Mother's Margarine - kosher for passover, is dairy and soy free. But, it's ONLY available prior to Passover, and it's not always easy to locate. I found some last year and about 8 lbs of it to freeze and use throughout the year. Mother's has other Kosher margarines, and the Kosher for Passover one is the ONLY one that's soy free. The others are KOSHER... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Result Help...
jayhawkmom replied to jayhawkmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yep, I am gluten-free anyhow. I was really hoping you'd chime in, Ursula. So, thank you. =) The thing is.... now I have to get my 1st degree relatives (esp. my mother and sister) to understand that this confirms their NEED to be tested. I really hope they'll listen to me, now! -
My husband and I are going to Chattanooga for Spring Break. Is there anyone from that area here who can point me in the direction of finding "safe" dining?? TIA!

ARCHIVED Enterolab Result Help...
jayhawkmom replied to jayhawkmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Nevermind... I think I understand. When it says "having two copies" means having one Celiac and one non-celiac into gene. I think. -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Result Help...
jayhawkmom posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've seen these question posted a million times before. But, now it's my turn... I don't "get" my Enterolab results. Can someone please translate into PLAIN old "dummy English?" HLA-DQB1 Molecular analysis, Allele 1 0201 HLA-DQB1 Molecular analysis, Allele 2 0602 Serologic equivalent: HLA-DQ 2,1 (Subtype 2,6) Now, I understand... -
ARCHIVED Phili 76ers And Celiac
jayhawkmom replied to jayhawkmom's topic in Publications & Publicity
I live in the Midwest (KS/MO) so I have no real interest in this. Plus... I don't like basketball. But, I thought some of you where were nearby might enjoy. =)
