  1. Ok... we did our first "home therapy session" this morning. Josh's doctor gave us an assignment. When he has a meltdown, once it's over and he's calm and rational, we have to sit down together and identify the starting and ending triggers as well as identify all thoughts that occurred during the meltdown. I learned something about my son, today, that...
  2. Passover is a virtually gluten free holiday! It's awesome. However... one must be mindful that Matzo still contains wheat, so avoid that - even during Passover. I've been thrilled to be able to find Mother's Margarine for my dairy/soy allergic son. I'm going to seriously stock up so I have enough to last throughout the year. =)
  3. *UPDATE* My son had his doctor appointment today. It went surprisingly well. Of course, at first Jay refused to speak, make eye contact, or anything else - but when the doctor knelt down to his level to shake his hand, Jay did shake the doctors back. 15 minutes into the session Dr. L says something like, "So I understand you really like sharks - which...
  4. Everyone around him knows of his obsession. In fact, just yesterday he came home with a "mini-report" from a website that his teacher had found and printed for him. =) He has stuffed sharks in his bedroom (toys... not taxidermy, LOL!) and he draws them constantly. He asked me to help him find out what the specific name of a "shark scientist" is when he was...
  5. I don't think "racing thoughts" is typically associated with Asperger's. I think it's an issue more widely associated with bipolar disorder, specifically mania. Chad - Aspie's tend to have much higher than normal IQ's - yet seem almost "dumb" in social situations. And, I absolutely mean NO disrespect when I say that. Sensory issues are often a big deal...
  6. I agree. It's very possible you aren't looking at a Celiac diagnosis, however... it's still very possible that you are dealing with a gluten intolerance issue. If he's feeling better gluten free, encourage him to stay that way. No one needs gluten, if it makes him feel miserable, tell him not to eat it. But, I would continue to try to find out...
  7. Ce-Wyant, I commend you for taking such a pro-active approach to your child's health and well-being. I am glad you are able to get in sooner, than later. I can understand how frustrated you are, totally!! We went through all sorts of things with our daughter. Initial exams indicated nothing wrong with her. So, we went to the allergist. Tests confirmed...
  8. I agree. Your GI is nuts. If he is telling you that he saw flattening of the villi with the naked eye, and then said that your results are inconclusive... he's seriously insane, and not a very good doctor. Have you tried a gluten free diet?? Obviously, you have more going on than "just" Celiac, if you even have Celiac - but a gluten free diet can help...
  9. No, it doesn't mean you don't have Celiac. It does mean that your body wasn't producing enough "anti-self" antibodies to register, if you DO have Celiac. If you are IgA deficient - with regards to your total serum IgA - the test results were not be valid. IgA deficient people have to have their results interpreted on a different scale. Again, a positive...
  10. Elevated IgG does mean something. It doesn't necessarily mean Celiac - but it does suggest gluten sensitivity or other possible issues. There are some doctors that feel that the tTg and Ema are the only tests of importance. Many others feel that all the tests provide a piece of a puzzle - and can more readily identify other issues that may coexist with...
  11. We tried the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Crunch - and it was absolutely disgusting. To me, it tasted like straight malt, like rancid beer. I don't know if I got a bad box or what.... but, none of my three kids would eat it. My baby gagged on it and spit it out. LOL!!! Now, the Little Einsteins Stars are really quite tasty!! To me, they are a nice sweet treat...
  12. My 5 year old practically lives on the chicken nuggets. She and my 18 month old just love them!! My little one likes the fish sticks too, however... neither of his sibs will eat them. I just purchased the turkey corndogs today and have not yet tried them. (Wellshire Kids makes gluten-free chicken corndogs on a stick that are realllllllllly good!)
  13. For allergy testing, whether food or environment - a board certified allergist is the doctor to see.
  14. OMG!! Joshua was JUST like that. People commented ALL the time on how lucky we were because we had such a wonderful "easy baby." If we'd go to the mall, a party, a picnic - you name it... he'd be snoozin' away. He *never* slept at home.... he was always wide awake, taking everything in. Josh spent a couple of years in occupational therapy for sensory...
  15. My *biggest* problem was that I could not LOSE weight. Seriously. Lots of tummy aches, brain fog, and my amazing ability to hang on to 70+ pregnancy pounds from when my 3rd child arrived. Once I got totally on board with the gluten-free diet, I started dropping weight like crazy. My tummy aches are all-but gone, but I have 3 small children so I'll never...
  16. This is exactly one of the reasons I decided to revisit the issues my son was having...(well, that and the 4 hour meltdown the other night). When my son was at his friends house... his mother made a comment about how when 2 Aspie's play together, there is totally nothing "different" about it. They play together like all the other kids play together. I stood...
  17. If not eating gluten makes you feel better... don't eat it. I don't even tell people I'm gluten intolerant, or anything - anymore. I learned very quickly that people who don't understand WON'T understand and will just give you trouble. So, I just say, "I'm avoiding gluten" and leave it at that. If someone asks why... I just say, "personal choice." No...

    ARCHIVED Taxes

In some cases, people are able to deduct the cost of the differences of the gluten free foods from their gluten containing counterparts. However, that has to exceed a certain percentage of your annual income, 7% I believe. So, if you spent $3.00 on a gluten-free loaf of bread - and a normal loaf of bread is $1.50, you could deduct that $1.50 difference...
  19. Question to the Aspie parents.... Does your child/ren know s/he has Asperger's??? If so... how did you tell them?? My son knows that his best friend has Asperger's - (as our doctor says... "birds of a feather...") but I have not said anything to my son about his own diagnosis. I figured it was best to wait until after his appointment on Friday. But...
  20. It's only my opinion, but I've heard a LOT of negative things about that particular test, LOTS of false positives and test reactions to foods that are not reacted to. I think your best bet is an elimination diet to see if you TRULY react to any of these foods. Lots of luck to you!
  21. The reference range for total serum IgA is based on age... different ages, different stages of life, different IgA ranges.
  22. Hi Jerry! I'm glad you had a great time on your cruise. Here are my horribly uninformed and unprofessional opinions, for what they are worth. Your IgA was high, indicating that your body is making antibodies to gliadin. That means that for whatever reason, your body is offended by the gliadin protein, and it deems it to be an invader. This means you are...
  23. Wow. I don't even know what to say after reading some of these posts. I will add... I was also part of the crowd who's mom was "different." My mom was just out of high school when I was born, and my father was in the military - I believe I was probably a "shipping out" baby, though I have no proof of that. From the get-go - I was unwanted, and my mother...
  24. My 3rd child was born in August of 05 - and from that point until I went 100% gluten free, in November of 06, I'd lost nothing. I could eat nothing and would still not drop any weight at all. It was horribly frustrating. I initially started the gluten free diet in June of 06 - and lost a few pounds right off the bat. However, I was not committed and ...
