ARCHIVED Bubble Solution
Izak's Mom replied to Esther Sparhawk's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
ack, I hadn't even thought about bubbles - Izak loves them! Do you happen to know exactly what the source of gluten is?? I mean, I also thought they were just soap and water?? Or is it just that they're made in a factory that makes other things that have gluten in them? (more of a cc issue than a direct one?) -
ARCHIVED Veggie Booty Recall!
Izak's Mom posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi all - just wanted to share that Robert's American Gourmet is calling for a nationwide recall of Veggie Booty, which my son happens to love & I feed it to him all the time (ack). Apparently there's a chance of salmonella contamination, which can be fatal for kids. More info Open Original Shared Link. -E -
ARCHIVED Mom Of Adoptive Son 2 1/2 Years Old
Izak's Mom replied to Kujda's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Welcome Kujda! This is a great site - all kinds of useful info. I don't have anything in mind offhand as far as what you could give your family, but I'm sure you'll be able to find something here. Actually, Open Original Shared Linkis a great gov't link that basically explains what Celiac is. My son has also never had any "positive" tests, but the real... -
ARCHIVED They Messed Up The Samples On My Daughters Biopsy
Izak's Mom replied to Electra's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
it's called EMLA cream - it's a topical anesthetic. you put it on for an hour beforehand under an occlusive dressing (like saran wrap) and then the area is totally numb for a couple hours. -
ARCHIVED How Long Does It Take To Bake Good Bread?
Izak's Mom replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Lola B @ May 19 2007, 01:21 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->I, too, am having issues with finding a decent bread. I've tried the Gluten Free Pantry sandwich bread, and it's good, but tends to crumble quite a bit. The 50/50 water/club soda suggestion sounds intriguing... -
ARCHIVED How Long Does It Take To Bake Good Bread?
Izak's Mom replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I second this vote - the gluten-free Panty Favorite Sandwich Bread mix is terrific and I use my Kitchen-Aid & and the oven. Here are 3 secrets, though: 1) It says to let it rise 40 min, or until the dough comes up to the edge of the pan. In my experience, this takes more like an hour and a half. 40 min isn't long enough. 2) Instead of using water... -
ARCHIVED Finger Foods?
Izak's Mom replied to 2boysmama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
also - I'm pretty sure that the Gerber wagon wheels in apple flavor are gluten free. Those would be great for a 9 month old. -
ARCHIVED Finger Foods?
Izak's Mom replied to 2boysmama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
There's an AWESOME product called Baby Mum Mum that is sold at my local Price Chopper. It's a simple rice wafer, and is suitable for really little ones (infant) as well as the bigger guys (my son is almost 2 and still loves them). Try googling it to see if a store close to you carries them. -
ARCHIVED Is It Celiac? Please Help
Izak's Mom replied to justkaty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My 2 cents are to trust your own intuition. From what you've described, it sounds like something's awry. I don't buy the whole 'it's just toddler diarrhea' bit either...yes, kids put nasty things in their mouths, but that doesn't mean there can't be something else going on. My Izak is the sweetest, cutest, most pleasant little guy to be around - and I... -
ARCHIVED Chicken Nuggets/tenders
Izak's Mom replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I usually make my own breadcrumbs from a half a loaf of gluten-free pantry bread (i buy the mix & bake the bread - it's way easier than you think) - throw some day-old (ie, left out on a plate) slices into the cuisinart with some salt & pepper, garlic, parsley, little oregano, basil - however you like to flavor your breadcrumbs. then i pound the... -

ARCHIVED Gluten-free Moisturizer?
Izak's Mom posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Does anyone have any suggestions for a gluten-free heavy-duty moisturizer? My son is SO SO SOO dry and scaly and rashy, and I'm hesitant to use anything 'regular' on him because it seems that no one can ever confirm if the 'fragrance' or 'parfum' or whatever is safe. And Vaseline just gets him too greasy - I really need something that sinks into the skin... -
ARCHIVED How Do You Guys Do It?
Izak's Mom replied to Guhlia's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I agree with this poster - my son is nearing 2 and I thank whoever's upstairs on a daily basis for finding a terrific daycare/pre-school that is willing to deal with his Celiac. Mind you - I don't have an "official" diagnosis either - I simply told them he was gluten-free because if he has it, he'll get rashy and explosive diarrhea, etc. and explained about... -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Now Or Later On New C Diagnosis?
Izak's Mom replied to NewtoGF's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'd do the tests now - before going gluten-free - because if the doc is right and the gluten-free diet DOES work, you're not going to want to have to challenge him (give him gluten) to get an accurate test - especially if eliminating wheat zaps his problems. -
ARCHIVED Yellow Poop?
Izak's Mom replied to kookaburra's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I know what you mean. I don't have an 'official' (paper) diagnosis either - although the GI did say that it sounded an awful lot like Celiac. But she also said that if what I was doing diet-wise was working, then to stick with it...so I just tell the 'outside' world he has Celiac and leave it at that. Thankfully his ped. is with me on this one - she's... -
ARCHIVED Tomato Sauce Recipe For gluten-free Pasta Shapes
Izak's Mom replied to Suzie-GFfamily's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yes - it's that Spaghetti-O's flavor of kechup-y tomato sauce. Condensed tomato soup. Go figure. -
ARCHIVED Yellow Poop?
Izak's Mom replied to kookaburra's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Do you need the 'definitive test' at this point? It sounds like you already know exactly what his triggers are & his reactions sound pretty definitive! It sounds like you have him on the right diet now - if I were you, I'd just keep up the good work and try not to worry for now about having something 'official' on paper. If he's healthy and growing... -
ARCHIVED Tomato Sauce Recipe For gluten-free Pasta Shapes
Izak's Mom replied to Suzie-GFfamily's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
!! YES - here's the secret (drumroll....): condensed tomato soup. Not being celiac myself, I used to always use Campbell's when I need to reproduce that not-quite-pasta-sauce/not-quite-ketchup flavored sauce (btw, it works great with indian food) - but now that I have my celiac son Izak, I've switched to Amy's brand, which is really good. You may want... -

ARCHIVED gluten-free 7th Graders 2day Trip To Boston. School May Not Let Me Chaperone!
Izak's Mom replied to emtek5's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Find out what her exact itinerary will be, and exactly where in Boston she'll be when it's time to go get meals. Then get online, do a little research and find out what restaurants/delis/stores are in the same area and find out what gluten-free meals/products they sell. You can then arm her and/or a chaperone with a list of 'safe' things to order at a few... -

ARCHIVED Very Very Concerned Parent (long)
Izak's Mom replied to nogluten77's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Not sure how helpful this is, but if you can find some time to do a little online digging, I'd try to contact a European or other Ex-US doctor. Celiac disease is much better understood and recognized 'over there' and I would bet that if you emailed around, someone might be able to respond to you and provide you with some better information. The way I would... -
I fed my son some rice for dinner, and I added a bit of the Price Chopper Central Market Classic brand vegetable korma sauce thinking it was OK...then stupid me looked at the label AFTER he'd had a few bites and it lists 'modified tapioca starch' near the bottom. So now I'm feeling like a total idiot, but I just farted around on the internet for a bit and...

So my son Izak got glutened the other day - a well meaning but totally ditzy friend of my mom's was watching him for a few minutes while she went out to the post office, and when my mom came back, her friend said 'oh, we had such a good time - I gave him a cookie!!' AGH! the next day, he had his old explosive yellow liquid poop, but he also got this weird...
