  1. lol...I've been an active member of the poop patrol for quite awhile now! Sophiekins, thanks for the reassurance. My Izak's poops have quite a range to them & sound exactly like what 2boysmama is talking about. But I know he's eating well, and his growth & weight are on track, so I figured it was OK.
  2. My son loves my meatballs too, and I've adjusted them a bit - leaving out the parm will change the taste slightly, but you can use gluten-free breadcrums for the same texture. Instead of buying them (way too expensive for me), I get a loaf of gluten-free rice bread, let a couple pieces sit out overnight and then put them in the Cuisinart with some spices...
  3. Elaine, what state are you in? Some regular supermarket chains have much better 'natural'/'health' food sections than others.
  4. Hi - Like CarlaB mentioned, I just bring something from home for Izak to eat (he's almost 16 mos). In a pinch, we'll get a plain or cheeseburger and be VERY clear that no bun is to touch it; steamed plain veggies (most kitechens are willing to oblige); plain rice; or if he's really being a b&tch, just a banana or two and a dish of applesauce. At a diner...
  5. I've tried the Ian's chicken nuggets and quite honestly thought they were gross - tasted like paper. I've heard better things about the fishsticks but haven't tried them myself. Though I'm sure you could make homemade versions without too much effort that would be a hundred times better testing.
  6. Just to add to the list - my son is now almost 16 months, and not sure how your baby reacts, but we have to really watch it with the fruit (goes right through him), although bananas are OK. Apples in moderation are OK - I peel & slice on up, then stick the slices in a frying pan with a bit of butter & waters & steam/sautee them until they're...
  7. If you don't have to time to make soup from scratch though, Open Original Shared Link brand has some awesome gluten-free soups...my son loves the tomato-basil. Amy's also has other great buy & nuke & serve food - rice crust pizza and gluten-free mac & cheese are a couple of our favorites.
  8. So we finally got our genetic (blood) test results (wound up going through Prometheus Lab so insurance would cover it). Izak tested positive for HLA DQ2 (HLA DQA1*05/DQB1*02) and negative for HLA-DQ8. From what I've read online thus far, it appears that celiac is most commonly associated with the DQ2 gene, although my personal opinion is that he's non-celiac...
  9. Pirate's Booty "Tings" are like cheetos but healthier (taste just as good) - any of the Pirate's Booty booty stuff is great.
  10. I was just going to suggest this - Izak loved them, mashed together - although when starting, you should do them individually to make sure there's no reaction. We tried mashed sweet potatoes too, but I found that he didn't do well with them - they came right out the other end. Mashed peas he loved, and mashed green beans. Mashed pears were a big hit...
  11. I share others' amazement - 30 oz. is HUGE! Izak hardly has any juice, because when I give it to him - even seriously watered down - it gives him D. Some are worse than others...we stay totally away from apple and orange, but if I really water down some pear nectar it's sometimes OK. But otherwise, he's a vanilla soy-milk, water, or really weak herbal...
  12. I actually wound up having it done through my son's ped. (at the local hospital) so there wouldn't be any questions about coverage. They use Prometheus labs.
  13. That's why we decided not to have the serum/IgA testing, just the genetic component. For the serum/IgA to work, you have to be eating gluten and have it in your system (like you said), and Ike's been gluten-free for months - AND I'm absolutely NOT willing to give it to him just to get something on paper telling me what I already know. But the genetic test...
  14. We're still waiting on blood test results for my son, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say - pretty confidently- that my son's ped. is one of those docs. I think what it boils down to is a willingness to accept 'unpopular' science, or at the very least, have an open mind to the fact that there are a zillion things in life that you just can't understand...
  15. No problem! It is - but the toughest thing about doing it for a toddler is the teething issue. My Izak is just starting to get his molars, and it's been a try-and-see kind of thing with figuring out what's too crunchy for him to eat properly (he still seems to choke on tortilla chips) and what's too 'baby' for him to be interested in (he prefers...
  16. Hi Laura - Oy. I feel for your friend - it's tough enough to have a toddler, let alone one with a special diet! It seems like corn is the most insidious of his no-no list, so I took a minute to look around online for 'corn-free' stuff (since she can substitute for any other no-no products that might appear in a corn-free recipe), and here's what I found...
  17. My friend Susie has/had chronic urticaria since grade-school and unfortunately has never figured out what the deal was...although, she's in her late 20s now and maybe has only one bad breakout a year. But I know she used to just take prednisone when she'd get them. I'm sure you've already done some researching, but there are are some other Open Original...
  18. Not sure what your budget is, since most pre-packaged gluten-free food is not as cheap as 'regular' food, and the 'regular' food that is gluten-free isn't always so healthy (like potato chips)...but off the top of my head, here's what I give to my son that he loves: - Open Original Shared Link Pirate's Booty and Veggie Booty (they actually have other wheat...
  19. Just my 2 cents here - I think there are more than 2 genes for gluten sensitivity - maybe not full blown celiac, but gluten intolerance/sensitivity: Research Supporting Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitive Genes
  20. hang in there, mskelly. i know, it sucks to have to deal with all these food/allergy/intolerance issues (i don't have any issues myself, which makes it more irritating - like why can't my kid just eat the way i want to feed him?) but in the long run, you'll be so glad you persisted with getting to the bottom of things...it's what any good mother would do...
  21. I actually disagree with some of the other posters - I would say (even though I know it sounds totally counter-intuitive) put him to bed a half hour earlier and see what happens. My Ike goes to sleep between 6 and 6:30, and is up between 6-7am. (Nicole - 6:30am is SO sleeping in!!) Sometimes he'll start dah-dah-dah-ing around 5:30 am though, but I ignore...
  22. I know!!! When I was searching for answers way abck in the beginning, I came across some info on the web about 'non-specific toddler's diarrhea' where I think it said something like "A toddler who is thriving and cheerful despite having diarrhea may have chronic nonspecific diarrhea of childhood." I'm sorry, Chronic nonspecific diarrhea of childhood...
  23. Hi - and welcome! So, the yucky answer first: Here's a list of things to be suspicious of when you read food labels: Cereal Binding Edible Starch Filler Hydrolyzed Plant Protein *** Artificial Color Artificial Flavoring Caramel Color Coloring Flavoring Food Starch Maltodextrin Modified Food Starch Modified Starch Mono and Diglycerides Monosodium...
  24. Sounds like you're in the same boat as me. My son's ped. was all for the idea of Enterolab testing - until she consulted with the GI who told her that there's no such thing as a reliable stool test. I actually did a quick search online and found an article that Open Original Shared Linkher position, but my own personal opinion is that if a diet or other...
  25. So Ike had his blood test today - the background is, I had wanted to do the Enterolab testing and our ped. was totally on board with it - that is, until she consulted with the hospital gastroenterologist, who told her there's no such thing as a reliable stool test (and when I asked if she'd even heard of and/or checked out Enterolab, the answer was "no" ...
