Hi,

Welcome. There is Cafe Baldo in Wantagh, Mamma's in Oakdale --both offer Italian food.

Outback in Oceanside, Merrick & Westbury, PF Chang's in Westbury.

I live near Cafe Baldo, it is pretty good. The owner has Celiac for over 27 years and is very helpful and understanding. They make a great Chicken Marsala and they have gluten-free pizza.

Mamma's in out East. They have a much larger menu.

You can get lots of gluten-free foods at Trader Joe's in Merrick and Oceanside

Fairway in Plainview has a very large selection of gluten-free stuff.

There is also a gluten-free bakery in Massapequa. It is very good. It is called The Best Low Carb Cakes Ever

Good luck,

Donna

In addition to everywhere Donna said, there is also a bakery in East Meadow called Sweet Karma that sells gluten free bagels that are the most incredible thing. They are made by a woman named Joan who operates a company called Gluten Free Great Bakes, and they are sold out of this bakery. They are an absolute must!

Emerson's in Babylon just started a gluten free menu. I don't know anything about this place other than that.

They don't have a gluten free menu, but I have been to Cafe Bacci for several events and they have always been very accomodating and helpful; and always made a delicious meal.

And I know Donna mentioned Mama's but it's worth mentioning again. Go once and you'll be hooked. I drive about an hour and a half to go there. Enough said.

Also, Whole Foods in Manhasset has lots of gluten free food.

Thanks Jillian, I forgot about Sweet Karma's bagels. I'll have to get some.

I forgot to mention. At Wholefoods they have incredible gluten-free sandwich bread. It doesn't need to be toasted. It is up at the bakery counter. I wish I lived closer, it the best gluten-free bread I've ever had.

Living on Long Island and having Celiac Disease isn't so bad. There are lots of places to find gluten-free foods and restaurants. In the beginning it is overwhelming but you'll be fine . Long Island has a lot to offer.

Thank you very much for all the information you have given me. I was wondering do you know the name of the bread at whole foods. If I can find bread that actually taste good that would be great.

The bread is their own label. It is at the bakery counter with other gluten-free stuff like muffins and cookies.

I like the "sandwich" bread. You can get a list of all their gluten-free products on the Wholefoods web site.

It is the Wholefood's own label. Follow the link in this thread. It is simply called "sandwich bread"

It beats that frozen gluten-free bread anyday.

I haven't had any luck in any other restaurants on the south shore of LI. I have gone to Mc'Donald's and had fries and a salad without problem. The Mc'Donald's in Wantagh (by the LIRR) cooks the fries in a seperate area and in its own oil. They don't put the chicken nuggets in it. I confirm this each time and have never had a problem.

Also- B Well Naturally in Plainview (down the block from Fairway) has the BIGGEST selection of gluten-free products that i've found. Every time I go, I am constantly getting "samples" of new items while walking around the store! They make gluten-free items that they freeze (baked ziti, lasagna, chicken parm etc) that you can buy, keep in the freezer then just throw in the micro for a quick easy meal! They usually have individual pieces of cakes etc on hand too!!

I have found success at both of the Chilis in Nassau- Bethpage, and Westbury. I always ask for the manager (even though I have the latest copy of the gluten-free menu from the website) an explain I need my meal prepared gluten-free- and ask them to print me out the latest, just incase.

Charlie Browns Steakhouse (Lynbrook and Garden City?) have been good too. THey have a gluten-free menu online, and if you ask for it at the resturant they have it... just again, ask for a manger.

Trader Joe's gluten-free waffles are the ABSOLUTE best out there, they are usually sold-out in Merrick, when I do find them (ususlly on South Oyster Bay Rd one), I buy LOTS of them! (And they're cheap compared to other gluten-free foods!)

I frequent I Love Gluten Cafe about once a week, and Sweet Karma is good too!! If they are out of someting, they will order it from Joan and get it in ASAP.

Rita's ices are also OK (with the exception of the obvious "cookie" "dough" etc.. ones) (I go to the one in East Meadow now that it's open for the season again!)

If you take trips into NYC, there are lots of options, and Risotteria is an absolute MUST!!

What is this place?!!!

I recently found out that Yogurteria in Great Neck has gluten free food. I haven't gone yet so I'm not sure if it's just that they sell stuff or can make stuff there. I think it's both. Their website says they have stuff from The Grainless Baker and Everybody Eats.

For my Vit D3 deficiency it was recommended to take with Vit K2 (MK7) with the Vit D. The Vit K2 helps absorption of Vit D3. Fat also helps with absorption. I take Micro Ingredients Vit D3 5000 IU with Vit K2 100 micrograms (as menaquinone:MK-7). Comes in soft gels with coconut oil.  Gluten free but not certified gluten free. Soy free, GMO free.

@Known1, I submitted the following comment along with my contact information: "I have noticed that many food companies voluntarily include information in their ingredient/allergen label section when the product is made in an environment where cross contamination with any of the nine major allergens recognized by the FDA may also be likely. Even though celiac disease and gluten sensitivity are, technically speaking, not allergic responses, it would seem, nonetheless, appropriate to include "gluten" in that list for the present purpose. That would insure that food companies would be consistent with including this information in labeling. Best estimates are that 1% of the general population, many undiagnosed of course, have celiac disease and more than that are gluten sensitive."

Celiac Disease causes more vitamin D deficiency than the general population because of limited UV sunlight in the winter and the little available from food is not absorbed well in the damaged small intestine.  Taking 10,000 IU a day (250 mcg) a day broke my depression. Taking it for eleven years.  Doctor recently said to not stop.  My 25(OH)D is around 200 nmol/L (80 ng/ml) but it took about six years to get there.  Increasing vitamin D also increases absorption of Calcium. A good start is 100-gram (3.5-ounce) serving of salmon,  vitamin D from 7.5 to 25 mcg (300 to 1,000 IU) but it is going to take additional vitamin D supplement to be effective.  More importantly salmon has an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio 1:10 anti-inflammatory compared to the 15:1 infammatory ratio of the typical Western diet. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.  I respectfully disagree.  You cherry picked a small section from the page.  I will do the same below: The agency is seeking information on adverse reactions due to “ingredients of interest” (i.e., non-wheat gluten containing grains (GCGs) which are rye and barley, and oats due to cross-contact with GCGs) and on labeling issues or concerns with identifying these “ingredients of interest” on packaged food products in the U.S. “People with celiac disease or gluten sensitives have had to tiptoe around food, and are often forced to guess about their food options,” said FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, M.D., M.P.H. “We encourage all stakeholders to share their experiences and data to help us develop policies that will better protect Americans and support healthy food choices.” --- end quote Anyone with celiac disease is clearly a stakeholder.  The FDA is encouraging us to share our experiences along with any data to help develop future "policies that will better protect Americans and support healthy food choices".  I see this as our chance to speak up or forever hold our peace.  Like those that do not participate in elections, they are not allowed to complain.  The way I see it, if we do not participate in this request for public comment/feedback, then we should also not complain when we get ill from something labeled gluten-free. Have a blessed day ahead, Known1
