Celiac.com 11/01/2022 - We've been seeing a lot of questions wondering if pickles are gluten-free? The answer is that most are. Here's the rundown.

Pickles are wonderful things. Nearly every culture makes some kind of pickle. Pickles are probiotic, delicious, nutritious, and good for your digestion. Pickles can be made with just vegetables and salt, but often include water, vinegar, various herbs and spices, and sometimes sugar.

    Celiac.com Sponsor (A12):
In the United States when most people think of pickles, they think of the dill pickles they see in stores. These pickles are made with cucumbers, saltwater brine, distilled or other vinegar and spices, including dill, garlic, peppers, and are usually naturally gluten-free.

In reality, nearly any kind of vegetable can be pickled, including asparagus, beans, carrots, onions, peppers, and so much more. In countries outside the United States. However, pickles made with malt vinegars are often not gluten-free, so be careful with those types of pickles.

As with any food, it's important to be wary of anything added that might include gluten.

Some brands do go out of their way to label all or some of their pickles as gluten-free. Here's a list of brands that label some or all of their pickles as gluten-free. Many other brands of pickles are made without gluten ingredients, and are likely safe for celiacs. However, we've just listed brands that clearly state their pickles are gluten-free. The list is not meant to be comprehensive, or authoritative. As always, read labels and avoid gluten ingredients.

Pickle brands that label some or all of their pickles gluten-free, and are safe for people with celiac disease:

All Boar's Head pickles are gluten-free.

    Bubbies

    Old World brand from Poland:

*pickles *peppers *tomatoes *salads *vegetables  ----  are all gluten free and GMO free as stated on the front label. Great old fashioned flavors, be sure to refrigerate before eating to increase crispness. These pickles are seasoned very simple with mild vinegar and less salt in the European style.

Batampt brand, like Bubbies is a naturally fermented Kosher Dill.  While I think Bubbies has a bit of heat in the spices, Batampt does not.  Good sources of Lactobacillus, beneficial bacteria for your gut and may help Lactose Intolerance.
