Celiac.com 12/03/2021 - We get a lot of questions from celiac community members wondering if certain products are gluten-free. One question we see a lot is about chocolate.

Specifically, is Lindt Chocolate Bear gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease?

    Celiac.com Sponsor (A12):
The question refers to the numerous chocolate holiday bears put out by the Lindt chocolate company.

Our search of the Lindt company website turned up six edible bear chocolate products.

But a quick glance at the ingredients shows that the answer is NO

Many Lindt chocolates contain barley malt, or barley malt powder as an ingredient, and the Lindt Chocolate Bear is no exception. The ingredients for the Lindt chocolate bears lists barley malt powder.

For this reason, the Lindt Chocolate Bear is not considered gluten-free, or safe for people with celiac disease.

    Lindt Bear Chocolate Ingredients:

    • Sugar, cocoa butter, milk, chocolate, lactose, skim milk, soy lecithin (emulsifier), barley malt powder, artificial flavor. May contain tree nuts.

Godiva. According to Godiva Chocolates, its chocolate bars and solid chocolate pieces may contain gluten. Though it sells three certified gluten-free products, its website states that "Any person with a gluten allergy should NOT consume ANY of our products."Jul 8, 2020

If anyone in the UK is reading this and misses the Lindor milk chocolate truffles I've found a wonderful substitute which doesn't contain gluten from M&S which tastes, to my palate, anyway, exactly the same.

Per Lindt chat representative their products "without gluten ingredients" are handled on equipment shared with gluten containing products and are not tested.  The rep stated Lindt does not make gluten-free claim for any of their products (contrary to website), simply "without gluten ingredients".  Horrible and misleading.

Depends on how you look at it. I see it as an honest disclosure. Products like that may pose no problem for celiacs except the most sensitive. It may be misleading to new celiacs, however, who have not learned the ropes with regard to food industry terminology.

Are M&M's Gluten-Free and Safe for Celiacs?
Celiac.com 09/16/2020 (Updated 03/15/2021) - M&M's candies do not advertise or label their products as gluten-free. However, with a few exceptions, their candies are gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease. This list is for the USA, and note that in Australia and other countries they may contain wheat starch and not be gluten-free.
In September, 2019, Nima Sensors tested twelve flavors of M&M's, including several flavors that indicated that they may contain wheat. Of the twelve M&M's flavors tested by Nima, only two flavors tested positive for gluten. Those were Pretzel M&M’s, which lists wheat flour as an ingredient, and Crispy M&M's, which had no ingredient warning but do contain barley malt, which isn't gluten-free.
    The following ten other M&...
