Does This Sound Like Celiac To You?

Hi everyone, I am brand new here and I have a couple of questions.

I think that my daughter and I have either celiac, or gluten intolerance of some sort.

I am 30 years old and she is 7.

Here are our issues -

Me -

hypothyroid

weight gain

irritability

sadness/emotional

extreme gluten and sugar cravings

arthritis

stress fractures

many, many spine problems including completely dessicated discs and broken vertabrae with no known cause

joint, bone, and muscle pain

various intenstinal problems

bleeding ulcer

vertigo

depression

panic attacks

memory issues

brain fog

acid reflux

blood clots

frequent migraines

strange allergic reactions

VERY FREQUENT illnesses and infections - This last year alone I have had the flu around 10 times, bronchitis, pink eye, severe sinus infection, numerous skin, tooth, and wound infections, several colds, and I even had MRSA

and I'm sure I have forgotten some things

my daughter -

mood issues

panic attacks

discolored teeth despite good dental health routines

breathing issues

constant cravings for food, especially gluten containing food

 memory issues

heart problems and low oxygen saturation

We eat healthy most of the time, are pretty active, spend a lot of time outside and generally live a heathy lifestyle. I feel like I am falling apart here.

I don't have the money to go in and get tested but I would imagine if we went gluten free for a while and most of the symptoms disappear that would pretty much answer my question. How long does it take to see symptom improvement? Does this sound like a gluten issue to you?

Thanks so much for reading....

Welcome to the board.  :)

It could be celiac or non-celiac gluten intolerance (NCGI) based on your symptoms. If you can, I would get tested because you need to be eating gluten for about a month to get accurate tests and some people find that their reaction to gluten becomes worse after living gluten-free so reintroducing gluten later on might be a bad experience.

If you do decide to go gluten-free, it is generally recommended that you give the gluten-free diet at least 3 months with 6 being even better. That is because while some symptoms disappear quickly (stomach aches, headaches and bloating seem to go first) there are other symptoms (like joint pain) that seem to require 6 months to a year or so to show real improvement..

If you do go gluten-free, beware of withdrawl which can hit some people during the first month gluten-free. Many of us find that we feel worse before we feel better.

Good luck!

I've used magnesium taurinate and magnesium taurate vitamins.  Didn't notice much of a difference when I used them.

More great tips, and a good excuse to shop at M&S and also buy more iced buns!   I wish we had an ASDA near us, as the few times we've been to one their gluten-free pasta range seemed very reasonably priced compared to other shops.  Thanks so much, @Russ H.

I hope you are on the mend soon. About 1 in 5 people who contracted chicken pox as a child go on to develop shingles in later life - it is not uncommon. There are 5 known members of the herpes virus family including chicken pox that commonly infect humans, and they all cause lifelong infections. The exact cause of viral reactivation as in the case of shingles or cold sores is not well understood, but stress, sunburn and radiotherapy treatment are known triggers. Some of the herpes viruses are implicated in triggering autoimmune diseases: Epstein-Barr virus is suspected of triggering multiple sclerosis and lupus, and there is a case where it is suspected of triggering coeliac disease. As to whether coeliac disease can increase the likelihood of viral reactivation, there have been several cohort studies including a large one in Sweden suggesting that coeliac disease is associated with a moderate increase in the likelihood of developing shingles in people over the age of 50. US 2024 - Increased Risk of Herpes Zoster Infection in Patients with Celiac Disease 50 Years Old and Older Sweden 2018 - Increased risk of herpes zoster in patients with coeliac disease - nationwide cohort study
