Barbara's Bakery Cereal

I used to eat Barbara's Bakery Brown Rice Crisps last year before I even knew I had a problem w/ gluten. I always felt bad after eating cereal. Now that I'm gluten free I thought maybe the cereal is ok but maybe the milk or Rice Dream I used back then were the only reason for feeling bad.

Sunday morning I had the cereal again and Sunday night I was having a full-on gluten reaction. The first one in awhile. :(

I just happened to be looking at the Delphi list today and it says Barbara's Bakery cereals are made on the same equipment as gluten products. Has anyone else reacted to the cereals or is the cereal probably not the cause of my reaction. Anyone eat Barbaras Bakery cereals and do ok w/ them?

YES! I thought I got a reaction from their Honey Rice Puffins but since I thought they were safe, I couldn't figure out what happened. Can you trust anything???

Wow...so I'm not crazy afterall!!

I've had this unopened box for a long time and I was scared to try it...it was like I had this "instinct" not to eat it. I knew I felt bad when I ate it before but back then I was really sick all the time... so it was hard to tell anything for sure. After eating it on Sunday I felt fine all day so by the time I got my reaction I had pretty much forgotten about the cereal until I saw that on the Delphi list. The cereals listed are the Brown Rice Crisps, Corn Flakes and Honey Rice Puffins.

Thanks for your reply...maybe now I can stop wracking my brains trying to figure out what happened.

I'm glad I saw this post. I had bought the brown rice crisps thinking everything looked fine. But, then I decided that I had had enough with mystery glutenings and I wasn't going to risk it. I gave the box to my husband (not celiac disease or gluten-free)....he's not too excited about having to eat them.

Thanks...my mom says "See, she is more careful....you should be more like her."

Quite the opposite actually. I have been glutened on and off for the last 4 months or so and couldn't figure it out. I had gotten to the point where I didn't want to try any new foods until I got the rxns under control. Turns out it was likely a hair product that appeared fine based on ingrediants. I'll find out in a few more days if that's what I was reacting to. So frustrating.

Anyway, I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks,

I feel ok now except for the aches and pains...a little tired too. I actually am very careful (I think). I try to be anyways...when I start to feel very good I tend to take more chances like with the cereal. I checked out the Barbaras Bakery website and there was a special diets section, a drop down list w/ gluten free foods and the first one on the list was Brown Rice Crisps. I felt that they had to be safe. <_<

Barbara's Bakery has a lot of "Wheat Free" items... but you have to make sure they are gluten-free as well. :) I haven't eaten any of their products since having celiac disease.

Thanks,

The cereal is actually suppossed to be gluten free according to the website. I didnt know they used the same equipment for their gluten products so I wasnt aware there could be contamination.

I've been on this board awhile now so this might seem a stupid question but can contamination like this really cause a reaction in me? Also is it just as bad as if I actually ate something with gluten "in" it? I seem to have recovered fairly quickly. Its only been 3 days and I'm feeling pretty good today.

I've had bad results from known contaminations. I'm reading this book now called "Dangerous Grains" and the authors mention that people with a gluten sensitivity/celiac disease build up a tolerance to gluten, which may be why so many don't get sick for years, but after going gluten-free, that tolerance is gone and we get sick on noticeably smaller amounts. This "tolerance" doesn't mean that damage isn't occuring either. Kind of interesting. Who knows though, everyone's body is different. Glad to hear you are better though.

ME TOO!!!

I have been feeling crappy since eating it, but couldn't figure out what the heck glutened me. I have been practically pulling my hair out trying to figure it out, I even restricted myself to eating at home only, assuming it was something from outside my house, but it's not! THANKS!

Well...I'm glad I posted about this. I was expecting everyone to say they are fine with the cereal and I'd be left wondering....like usual. Maybe I'm getting better about figuring out my reactions and where they're coming from. :)

I thought I had recovered quickly but I was wrong. Chemical sensitivities and food sensitivities have been BAD all week and still today. I think accidental glutenings make my gut even leakier if thats possible...this always happens and it last 1-2 weeks. :(

Hi and welcome! :)

To the best of my knowledge, the only Barbara's cereal that is gluten-free is the Honey Rice Puffins. Several are wheat-free, but those, of course, are not gluten-free.

Welcome to the celiac.com communiuty, @Matthias! Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.

I might suggest you consider buckwheat groats. https://www.amazon.com/Anthonys-Organic-Hulled-Buckwheat-Groats/dp/B0D15QDVW7/ref=sr_1_4_pp?crid=GOFG11A8ZUMU&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.bk-hCrXgLpHqKS8QJnfKJLKbKzm2BS9tIFv3P9HjJ5swL1-02C3V819UZ845_kAwnxTUM8Qa69hKl0DfHAucO827k_rh7ZclIOPtAA9KjvEEYtaeUV06FJQyCoi5dwcfXRt8dx3cJ6ctEn2VIPaaFd0nOye2TkASgSRtdtKgvXEEXknFVYURBjXen1Nc7EtAlJyJbU8EhB89ElCGFPRavEQkTFHv9V2Zh1EMAPRno7UajBpLCQ-1JfC5jKUyzfgsf7jN5L6yfZSgjhnwEbg6KKwWrKeghga8W_CAhEEw9N0.eDBrhYWsjgEFud6ZE03iun0-AEaGfNS1q4ILLjZz7Fs&dib_tag=se&keywords=buckwheat%2Bgroats&qid=1769980587&s=grocery&sprefix=buchwheat%2Bgroats%2Cgrocery%2C249&sr=1-4&th=1 Takes about 10 minutes to cook. Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat. Yes, it can be difficult to get much dietary calcium without dairy. But in many cases, it's not the amount of calcium in the diet that is the problem but the poor uptake of it. And too much calcium supplementation can interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals in general because it raises gut pH.

What you’re describing really does not read like typical IBS-D. The dramatic, rapid normalization of stool frequency and form after removing wheat, along with improved tolerance of legumes and plant foods, is a classic pattern seen in gluten-driven disease rather than functional IBS. IBS usually worsens with fiber and beans, not improves. The fact that you carry HLA-DQ2.2 means celiac disease is absolutely possible, even if it’s less common than DQ2.5, and many people with DQ2.2 present later and are under-diagnosed. Your hesitation to reintroduce gluten is completely understandable — quality of life matters — and many people in your position choose to remain strictly gluten-free and treat it as medically necessary even without formal biopsy confirmation. If and when you’re ready, a physician can help you weigh options like limited gluten challenge, serology history, or documentation as “probable celiac.” What’s clear is that this wasn’t just random IBS — you identified the trigger, and your body has been very consistent in its response.
