T1 Diabetes And Cd

Hello -

I was diagnosed with celiac disease on Wednesday.

Last Tuesday - 11/18 - I was dx with gastroparesis.

(celiac disease was actually dx at the same time, but my appt wasn't till this Wed - came as quite a shock to say the least, I had no idea I was being tested for it).

And I've been a T1 diabetic for 25 years - I am on an insulin pump and have excellent control (last a1c was 5.4).

Is there anyone that is similar to me?

I'd love some advice from another T1 diabetic on how to cope with, yet another, time consuming chronic disease.

I'm also curious...I've been steadily gaining weight.

I eat about 1800 - 2000 calories a day

work out regulary 4-5 times a week doing an hour of cardio and a half hour of weight training. I'm nervous that once I start the gluten-free diet on Monday that I'm going to start gaining MORE weight.

Although that may be unfounded since I have uncharacteristically gained weight and not lost weight.

I guess I'm just nervous...period.

I welcome any advice and suggestions.

I don't have TI, but my mom does.

Please go on the gluten-free diet immediately. It will not make you gain weight if you have gained weight as a result of celiac. You will more likely lose weight. I was bloated and felt like I'd gained b/c of celiac. I dropped 5 pounds when I went gluten free and stopped working out. I'm just letting my body rest and recuperate, and it's finally making it happy. If that doesn't make you lose the strange weight you've gained, get your thyroid checked out. If that doesn't help, try the specific carbohydrate diet - the book is Breaking the Vicious Cycle. I started this diet last week and already feel even better.

      I didn't ask a doctor about this actually. I did ask several doctors a long time ago and they told me gluten has nothing to do with hashimoto's. One of them told me to do a gluten challenge to test for celiac, but at the time I was in graduate school so couldn't afford to be even more ill than I was. If you have the symptoms, I really don't advise you to do a gluten challenge. It messed me up mentally and physically for months. At the same time, I benefitted from doing the challenge in the sense that it convinced me that all my symptoms were truly from gluten - even stuff like insomnia! So now I am terrified to eat gluten, whereas before I would have a little once in a while and not notice anything dramatic.

      I am in a similar situation where I can't feasibly do a gluten challenge but have all the symptoms and I have 2 celiac genes. I'm curious if your doctor advised you to eat as if you had a diagnosis or if they were more dismissive about it.

      Negative, although I had most of the symptoms of celiac disease. I now eat as if I had a diagnosis.
