Okay... I know there has been a lot of talk about different gluten-free beers being off the market. I have a new one for you....

New Grist Beer from Lakefront Brewery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I am not sure where this is available. I live in the Milwaukee area and bought it at a liquor store today. They just started carrying the beer and are almost out. It is very good! I am (or was) a lite beer drinker. I am SO excited about this beer!

The best part is this... Tonight was my "suprise" 30th birthday party from my dad's side of the family. They thought enough of me to check Wisconsin for gluten-free beer. Which, I may add, untill now carried nothing!! When they checked this liquor store ( a large one) they were told that the liquor store just started carrying it and they were out already!!! That is a great sign!! If enough people want it, they will continue to carry it! I have something to put in the cooler now for all of the tailgate parties and backyard cookouts! This is a breakthrough for us in Wisconsin! I hope it makes it to other parts of the US. My aunt did check the web site and said there was no info on the gluten free beer. I am not sure how new it is. I know my bottle was brewed the 3rd week in October.

I just checked the website and I didn't find that particular beer. But I'm really excited because Lakefront beer is available near where I live! That means I could probably just request that they get this new stuff in for me.

I'm from Madison and my girlfriend who works at a health co-op in Milwaukee bought some for me on Monday...it's brewed from Sorghum from what I understand and it's absolutely terrific...

Lakefront rolls out gluten-free beer

Lakefront Brewery Inc., Milwaukee, has introduced New Grist, a gluten-free beer for consumers who suffer from Celiac disease, or gluten intolerance.

Brewed from sorghum and gluten-free yeast grown on molasses, New Grist is designed for consumers who are on restricted diets due to intolerance to gluten, a protein found in common brewing grains such as barley, wheat and rye.

"You never realize how important it is for some people to have a beer," said Russ Klisch, Lakefront president.

Lakefront is marketing the brew as a barley- and wheat-free product pending governmental guidelines for all products claiming "gluten-free" status, Klisch said.

New Grist is being sold in six-packs of 12-ounce bottles for $6.99.

Lakefront plans to make New Grist its first brand available to consumers throughout the United States.

my dad bought me a case of this the other day!! I live in chicago and he found it out in the western suburbs. I am such a beer girl - so i was practically in tears when i saw all that beer - all for me!! apparently he talked to the liquor store manager and the manager said that the Bard's Tale beer had been recalled because there were many cases of the bottles just exploding on the shelves - i actually heard this from a liquor store in my neighborhood as well. this new stuff is good. Its a little sweeter than a regular beer. More like a cross between a cider and a beer. i dont care if it tasted like sludge - i would have drank it. i miss beer so much. big fan of Grist! the store manager said that tons of people were buying the beer over the holidays - so i think thats a good sign! its catching on. the manager said he would definitely order more!

It has a better body and a nuttier finish than Bards anyway -- I liked it!

Its not a "Light American" beer, but I was hoping it wasn't anyway....

I need to start a gluten-free brewey out here in Vegas...

maybe I will call it "Jokers Wild" or something catchy....

I hate having to wait to go back east to get beer at a "reasonable" price..

I am not sure how you can get it. I went to their website... lakefrontbrewery.com. There was a place to contact the brewery. They answered in just a few days.

New Grist is now available (as in just today, I just bought the first sixer) at B&G Liquors in Chippewa Falls, WI if anyone is interested and within driving distance.

We asked at our favorite liquor store about gluten-free beers and they didn't have any but said if we found the brand name and brewery they would order for us!! Great customer service, but we live in a pretty small town.

I'm looking forward to having beer again. :D:D:D

I am going to have to rally the Vegas Celiacs into some action....

Just thought I'd share this article. It was in the Milwaukee Journal. It is "the" newspaper in the Milwaukee area.

Lakefront Brewery Inc., a Milwaukee craft brewer, has launched a new beer that is aimed at people with an illness that leaves them unable to tolerate gluten, a protein found in wheat and other grains.

New Grist Beer will be targeted to people with celiac disease. It is brewed with sorghum, and it is the first U.S. beer brewed without malted barley or gluten-containing products, according to Lakefront.

"We're glad New Grist makes it possible for people with celiac disease to finally have a beer," said Russ Klisch, Lakefront president, in a statement. "And I'm very pleased with the initial requests and compliments for this product that have been pouring in from around the country."

New Grist will be the first beer Lakefront has sold nationally.

The company sells around 6,000 to 7,000 barrels annually. Lakefront's beer lineup includes brands that pay homage to Milwaukee neighborhoods, such as Riverwest Stein and East Side Dark.

Lakefront also brews several seasonal beers, such as Big Easy Beer, which peaks in sales around Mardi Gras, and Snake Chaser Stout, which is popular around St. Patrick's Day.

Most of Lakefront's sales are in Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

An estimated 3 million people in the United States are living with celiac disease.

      You already got some great recommendations. Just want to second that Mallorca (and Spain in general) is one of the best and easiest places for celiacs to travel. I have been to Mallorca multiple times and have never experienced any cross contaminations and there are SO many easy to buy options in regular supermarkets. Hope you have a wonderful trip.

      I agree.  If someone has Barrett's Esophagus, at least here in the UK, as I understand it under normal circumstances a PPI needs to be taken long term (or similar medication).  I have two friends with this.  The PPI it does have side effects but they still have to take it.

      Do talk to your doctor about making changes to your medication.    I'm not a medical doctor.   I'm a microbiologist.  I studied nutrition before switching to microbiology because I was curious what vitamins were doing inside the body. I would hate to give advice that jeopardizes your health, so do discuss things with your doctor.

      @Jmartes71, Sorry you've been feeling so poorly.   Are you taking any medication to treat the SIBO?   Are you taking any Benfotiamine?  Benfotiamine will help get control of the SIBO.  Thiamine deficiency has symptoms in common with MS. Have you had your gas appliances checked for gas leaks and exhaust fume leaks?  Carbon Monoxide poisoning can cause the same symptoms as the flu and glutening.  Doctors have to check venous blood (not arterial) for carbon monoxide.  Are other inhabitants sick, or just you?  Do they leave the house and get fresh air which relieves their symptoms?

      European wheat is often a "soft wheat" variety which contains less gluten than "hard wheat" varieties found in the States.   In European countries, different cooking methods and longer  fermentation (rising or proofing) times allow for further breakdown of gluten peptides. Wheat in the States is a blend of hard and soft wheat.  Gluten content can vary according to where the wheat was grown, growing conditions, when harvested, and local preference, so a blend of both hard and soft wheat is used to make a uniform product.   I moved around quite a bit as a child in a military family.  I had different reactions to gluten in different areas of the country every time we moved.  I believe some wheat breeds and blends are able to provoke a worse immune response than others.   Since European soft wheat doesn't contain as much gluten as American wheat, you may try increasing your intake of your soft wheat products.  A minimum of ten grams of gluten is required to get a sufficient immunological response so that the anti-gluten antibodies leave the intestines and enter the bloodstream where they can be measured by the tTg IgA test.  Your whole wheat bread may only have a gram of gluten per slice, so be prepared...
