Irregular Periods Post Gluten Free Diet

I was diagnosed with celiac disease 8/20/05 and began a gluten free diet from that day. I now have extremely irregular periods. I am not near menopause yet. Has anyone experienced this ? I had very predicatable periods before going gluten free. I am not pregnant either. (Neg preg test today) I appreciate all replys.

hi i have the same problem too but i am always on my peroid, i go 10 days then i am on another 10 and on i feel i am always on i have been to mmy oby and she is keepong a cart going for me after this month she says she may try hormone tab for me. i am 42 so it could be my change in life but she doest think so , i would get with your oby and talk to her or him

I have been so irregular for the past 10 years. My new doctor thinks that celiac disease could be the cause of it. I go months and months without a period. I have had very low iron for years too. One doctor thought I was starting early menopause but the estrogen levels were normal. It would be interesting to find out if this is another symptom of celiac disease.

Yeah, I was gonna say too that it could be low iron and your body is trying to conserve. It more likely the celiac itself and not the gluten free diet that is whacking it up. I'm on the pill, so I don't have the same problem.

      Hi there @MCAyr I have a small umbilical hernia which came about during my second pregnancy.   I can just about see it, and feel it, when I stand or sit, but it is far less noticeable when I lie down.  I always know when I am putting on weight because I can get pain and burning near the site, funnily enough not on the hernia itself but either side!  I would imagine bloating could cause the same effect as weight gain. In my case I don't think it is my bowel protruding but a bit of fat  - sorry,  I realise this isn't painting a very pretty picture.  But in truth it is scarcely noticeable.  It has never really got bigger in size. I was rather hoping that it could be operated on but here in the UK they don't seem to operate on every hernia anymore.  My GP isn't remotely worried about it. In a way, I should be thankful - it is like an early warning system that I need to go on a diet! Cristiana

      The hernia description would likely be unrelated to celiac disease, but you'd need to get it checked out by your doctor to be sure it's a hernia.
