Feeling Terrible

Hi, I am new here. I am here because I saw a GI doc and the possibility of celiac came up. I am having a scope done in a week because the blood test that I have had in the past came back inconclusive (I dont understand that) My doctor did say that the scope with biopsy is the best way to test.

So here is my story-I have always had "tummy trouble" going to the bathroom shortly after i eat and tummy pain. I have had sever joint and muscle pain over the last almost 2 years so I went to my doctor and a specialist and was diagnosed with fibroyalgia. Which is completely useless because they dont know how is happens or how to fix it. The meds they gave me had horrible side effects so I quit taking them and never went back to the specialist. I have always struggled with depression and anxiety-been on many different meds for it.

Fast forward to last Sunday. I woke up and felt like complete crud. I was beyond exhausted and didnt understand why. I ended up chalking it up to a busy week and fibro flaring up. By the evening i was nauseous and by Monday morning I was still feeling terrible, still exhausted even with lots of sleep and my abdomen was tender to the touch. I went to my doctor and she thought that it was my appendix so she sent me to the ER. They did a CT scan and it came back normal so they sent me home. Still feeling terrible.

I managed to get into a GI doc today who went over my history, ordered another celiac blood test and scheduled a scope for next week. Celiac seems to be at the top of his list but he wont commit to anything. He said it could also be an ulcer, food allergy or IBS?

Is it normal for Celiac to get worse all of a sudden? It doesnt seem to matter what I eat, whenever I eat Im in the bathroom and in pain for a few hours afterwards now. Although Im sure there is gluten in what im eating.  I am still nauseous and the exhaustion is coming and going.

The diet change for me would be REALLY hard but if it meant feeling better I would do it with a smile! I am not "hoping" for celiac but hoping for answers. It seems like a "too good to be true" situation if changing my diet could solve all of my issues.

Right now just sitting here I am in so much pain in my body. I just want it to stop. I want to be able to fix it. So theres my story, if you can offer any advice or wisdom id appreciate it. <3

The thing with celiac is if you eat gluten ( two different proteins that are found in wheat, barley, rye, oats) it destroys the villi in your small intestines.  It seems a lot of people have a burning pain that goes a long with it.  I just got my celiac diagnosis three months ago and my stomach is still messed up, I have been sick my whole life, all thirty seven years of it.  It takes time to heal, anywhere from months to years.  The last few years before my diagnosis my health would go in streaks.  Sometimes I would feel really good for a while and then I would feel awful for months on end.  It gets worse before it gets better.

In about two weeks you should know for sure.  I would find out just what tests were drawn and the results, it is easier for us to interpret them.  Then we can also give you a little guidance into what other tests should be done to truly either rule out celiac or diagnosis it.  Some people never get a true diagnosis but find that being totally gluten free makes them feel better so they stick with it. Don't stop eating gluten until you are done with your testing though.

The diet seems overwhelming at first but once you start feeling better, it is worth it.  You might want to read up a little about it.  There is a newbie thread on here that talks about the diet and cross contamination.  You could get a head start.

In my opinion, doctors throw a lot of diagnosis at us when they really don't know the reason why.  Yes you might have depression and anxiety, but why?  Some doctors would rather throw pills at you than figure out why you are depressed.  You feel like s$#&, that's why.  IBS is another bull pucky diagnosis, I have seen someone reference it to " I Be Stumped".  Once again, yes your bowel is irritated but why?

Good luck with getting your answers so hopefully you can be on the road to recovery.

When he does the endoscopy, make sure he takes 6 to 8 biopsies, most damage cannot be seen with the naked eye.

Read the Newbie 101 thread under the Coping Forum.  Great Info.

Good luck with your testing.

Thank you for your responses. I have another question...They gave me a script for bental (sp?) in the ER. I guess its a muscle relaxer for your stomach? Anyways, My GI doc said to go ahead and take it and it does seem to be helping. Would it still help if i had Celiac? I am wondering if because the med is helping that maybe celiac is not likely?

This stuff has taken over my brain. ugh.

If it is a muscle relaxer for your stomach, then it would be relaxing the stomach and likely also the intestines....and in my experience with muscle relaxers, also numbing them a bit. That being said, it could be treating a symptom, not a cause. Comparison to what I'm saying would be your fibro is flaring up. (From what I understand about fibro, it's all about pain.) You take some pain meds, treating the symptom of pain, but not the cause of the pain which is the fibro.

That makes sense. Thank you!

I had a very rough month after diagnosis. No exaggeration, lost so much inflammatory weight, I looked like a bag of bones, underneath i had been literally starving to death. I did start feeling noticeably better after a month of very strict control of my kitchen and home. What are you eating for breakfast and lunch? I ignored my doc and ate oats, yes they were gluten free, but some brands are at the higher end of gluten free. Lots of celics can eat Bob's Red Mill gluten-free oats, but not me. I can now eat them, but they have to be grown and processed according to the "purity protocol" methods. I mail order them, Montana Gluten-Free brand. A food and symptoms and activities log can be helpful in tracking down issues. You might be totally aware, but I have to mention about the risk of airborne gluten. As the doc that diagnosed me warned . . Remember eyes, ears, nose, and mouth all lead to your stomach and intestines.  Are you getting any cross contamination? Airborne gluten? Any pets eating gluten (they eat it, lick themselves, you pet them...)? Any house remodeling? We live in an older home, always fixing something. I've gotten glutened from the dust from cutting into plaster walls, possibly also plywood (glues). The suggestions by many here on vitamin supplements also really helped me. I had some lingering allergies and asthma, which are now 99% gone. I was taking Albuterol inhaler every hour just to breathe, but thiamine in form of benfotiamine kicked that down to 1-2 times a day within a few days of starting it. Also, since cutting out inflammatory seed oils (canola, sunflower, grapeseed, etc) and cooking with real olive oil, avocado oil, ghee, and coconut oil, I have noticed even greater improvement overall and haven't used the inhaler in months! It takes time to weed out everything in your life that contains gluten, and it takes awhile to heal and rebuild your health. At first it's mentally exhausting, overwhelming, even obsessive, but it gets better and second nature.

Hi,  I care for my seven year old daughter with Celiac. After watching her for months, I have figured out that she has problem with two kinds of fats- animal fat and cooking oils. It basically makes her intestine sore enough that she feels spasms when she is upset. It only happens on days when she has eaten more fat than her usual every day diet. (Her usual diet has chia seeds, flaxseeds, and avocado/ pumpkin seeds for fat and an occasional chicken breast.) I stopped using cooking oils last year, and when I reintroduced eggs and dairy, both of which I had held off for a few months thinking it was an issue of the protein like some Celiac patients habe mentioned to be the case, she has reacted in the same fashion as she does with excess fats. So now I wonder if her reaction to dairy and eggs is not really because of protein but fat.   I don't really have a question, just wondering if anyone finds this familiar and if it gets better with time.  Thank you.

Hello, My name is Chanda and you are not the only one that gose through the same things. I have found that what's easiest for me is finding a few meals each week that last. I have such severe reactions to gluten that it shuts my entire body down. I struggle everyday with i can't eat enough it feels like, when I eat more I lose more weight. Make sure that you look at medication, vitamins and shampoo and conditioner also. They have different things that are less expensive at Walmart.

Thank you so much! I saw some tips around the forum to make a food diary and now that I know that the community also struggles with corn, egg and soy, the puzzle pieces came together! Just yesterday I tried eating eggs and yes, he’s guilty and charged. Those there are my 3 combo nausea troublemakers. I’m going to adjust my diet ☺️ Also thank you for the information about MCAS! I’m from South America and little it’s talked about it in here. It’s honestly such a game changer now for treatment and recovery. I know I’m free from SIBO and Candida since I’ve been tested for it, but I’m still going to make a endoscopy to test for H. Pylori and Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). Thank you again!! Have a blessed weekend 🤍

Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.
