Glutening, Food Poisoning Or Both?

I did many things wrong in the past 48 hours. 2 days ago, i made lemon pie, i ate 1/4 of it that same night, other quarter in the morning.. i felt like it was too much but didnt feel bad,  i shared it with my family and wasn't clear enough on how to avoid cross contamination.. then i was angry, because they probably glutened my lemon pie, i really wanted to eat some more so i ate around the parts they probably touched (i ate another quarter).

 

Some hours later i started feeling terrible, that was yesterday and i still feel bad. I know both things i did were bad, i shouldnt have eaten 3/4 of that lemon pie, but it was delicious xD 

 

I dont know how to recognize my glutened symptoms, so i dont know if i was glutened, or i ate too much lemon pie (probably this is the reason) or what, but i dont feel bad enough to go to the ER. 

 

Is it normal to feel bad after eating too much lemon pie?  I feel so dumb..

If I ate that much lemon pie, I might have some issues, too.  But it tasted sooooooo good!   :D

Ha, I thought the same thing Karen did.  But mine would be pecan pie... mmmmmmm.  It really is hard to tell what the culprit is in these situations.  If you really want to be sure, you could make a 100% gluten-free lemon pie after a few weeks has passed, and see what happens when you eat half of it  ^_^  And of course, this time of year is when things like stomach bugs and such are going around, so this may be one of those times where you just never know.  In the future for pies, as long as it isn't runny, you can cut out a portion for the gluten eaters and put it in another container (or vice versa), and hide your gluten-free portion from their thieving grasp.

Laura, that's a very good idea xD i'll make another lemon pie in some weeks and see what happens, but i think it was a combination of both.. i still feel bad! it's been 2 days now.

 

I'll cut out a portion for my family and hide the rest for me xD but i think i wont eat it in a single day this time haha

this thread made me lol !  (sorry you're feeling sick, but) i have done this and then wondered hmmmm?????   and felt pretty dumb.

 

i ate a bunch of cannolis for breakfast one time before a trip to the beach two hours away by car.  not cool.......   (not gluten, either, just a bunch of dairy and soy <chocolate chips yummmmm)  made a car full of people pull into every rest area on the way.

 

but, they were soooooo gooood  :)

I am not sure what to say except for I ate half of a bag of Nothing But Reds Starbursts the other night, but I felt fine. Some people can't handle a lot of sugar at once, might be as simple as that. It's hard not to always look at gluten as the culprit, but I'm going with the others that it was probably the quantity. Hope you feel better soon.

1/4 + 1/4 = 1/2 of the pie.   Yup, I'd feel sick too!  But I've been guilty of eating the whole darn pizza and being sick so there you have it.  My bet that it was toooo much pie.  lol :P

Could be gluten.

 

Could be too much fat.

 

Could be too much sugar.

 

Could be too much pie. 

 

Could just be a combination of any of the above ...

 

If you're still sick in a few days I would lean on the gluten side of things.  I always find that the inflammation lasts a while, whereas eating too much of a good thing will only affect me for a few hours.  YMMV, of course.

i've been feeling bad but I feel worse now, i touched some bread crumbs that were on a bag when i went shopping some hours ago,  forgot to wash my hands, then i had some ice cream and unconsciously licked my finger.. do you think i got glutened? i just licked a tiny bit!! :(  Ive been bloated and in pain these days, now had D (sorry tmi haha) i want to feel better..

No worries on the TMI, we have all heard it all :)  It is possible that you had some cross-contamination, but unlikely.  It is always a good practice to wash your hands before eating especially if you have been out of the house.  Other gross things could have been on that finger besides gluten  :ph34r:  (This is my inner germaphobe speaking, lol).  I try to wash my hands as soon as I get to the house so anything out of the house will be left outside.

i wasnt home when i had ice cream, i always wash my hands as soon as i get home :) and the package i touched literally had bread crumbs on it so i dont know, anyways it was many days ago.. i dont feel good yet, im writing a new post about new fun stuff happening to me now (  :(  )

      Yes.  Now, if you hit your finger with a hammer once, wouldn't you do your best not to do it again?  You have identified a direct connection between gluten and pain.  Gluten is your hammer.  Now you have to decide if you need a medical diagnosis.  Some countries have aid benefits tgat you can get if you have the diagnosis, but you must continue eating a gluten-normal diet while pursuing the diagnosis. Otherwise the only reason to continue eating gluten is social. There are over 200 symptoms that could be a result of celiac disease.. Celiac Disease and Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity  both cause multiple vitamin and mineral deficiency.  Dealing with that should help your recovery, even while eating gluten.  Phosphatidyl Choline supplements can help your gut if digesting fats is a problem,  Consider that any medications you take could be causing some of the symptoms, aside from gluten.

      Welcome to the forum, @Ben98! If you have been consciously or unconsciously avoiding gluten because of the discomfort it produces then it is likely that your blood antibody testing for celiac disease has been rendered invalid. Valid testing requires regular consumption of generous amounts of gluten. The other strong possibility is that you have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) which shares many of the same symptoms with celiac disease but does not have the autoimmune component and thus does not damage the small bowel lining. It is 10x mor common than celiac disease. There is currently no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out. Some experts in the field believe it can be a precursor to the development of celiac disease. Having one or both of the primary genes for developing celiac disease does not imply that you will develop active celiac disease. It simply establishes the potential for it. About 40% of the population has the genetic potential but only about 1% develop active celiac disease.

      TTG blood test and total IGA tested on many occasions which have always remained normal, upper GI pain under my ribs since 2022. I had an endoscopy in 2023 which showed moderate gastritis. no biopsy’s were taken unfortunately. genetic test was positive for HLADQ2. extreme bloating after eating gluten, it’ll feel like I’ve got bricks in my stomach so uncomfortably full. the pain is like a dull ache under the upper left almost like a stitch feeling after a long walk. I am just wanting some advice has anyone here experienced gastritis with a gluten issue before? thank you

Skin, brain fog, nails, muscle tone all inproved when I started taking 600 mcg (RDA 150 - 1000 mcg) of Liquid Iodine drops. Some with dermatitis herpetiformis, Iodine exacerbates the rash.  I started at 1 drop (50 mcg) and worked up to 12 drops, but I don't have dermatitis herpetiformis.
