Mamaw,

So sorry it wasn't what you had hoped. But at least you got to buy some good stuff!

And tell Rocket I thought he did a mighty-fine job typing!

Broncobux - I am going to Columbus on the 17th for my GI appointment and we are planning on trying out one of Cameron Mitchell's restaurants. I saved all the info that you posted a few weeks ago. Now I just have to remember to print it and take it with me!

I will be there that weekend (for the Michigan game) - Go Bucks!

Are you going to the game? If so I'm truely GREEN with envy!!! No worries though we will be in full Buckeye celebration mode here in Dayton! Have fun in Columbus!!!

Hey Kris

What do you think about the stuff you purchased from Everybody Eats???? I was a tad disappointed this year. I loved visiting but I'm with you about some of it. I paid because I hope some of it goes to research... In fact I paid for three of us... I don't think I will do it again. Maybe just for one of us. We really didn't get alot out of the lectures. great for new ones tho....

Did you happen to get a business card that was being passed out for the new cookbook??

mamaw

I was a bit dissapointed. The Challah was really good when it was first opened, but it didn't last 24 hours before it turned to sawdust. : ( The bagettes were much smaller than I anticipated. I think I am going to stick with Anna's breads for a while. I will be buying myself a (zoruchi?) bread machine before the week is out.

I don't believe I got a card for the new cookbook. What's the title?

Just wanted to add another great restaurant for anyone visiting or living in Columbus...Hyde Park (there is one on 23/Crosswoods, Henderson Rd & Frantz Rd). They don't have a gluten-free menu, but I gave the server my Triumph dining card and they were great!! I had filet mignon, baked potato, salad and creme brulee for dessert....it was awesome!!! They were very accommodating!! It is on the pricey side ($24.95 for the filet alone), but oh so good!!!!

I should graduate in about a year. I had to take some time off of school to care for my mom while she was sick and because my husband was transferred to WP so now I'm in the middle of trying to get into the Wright State program....what a nightmare! I work in the pharmacy at MVH, how funny! I tip my hat to your mom, I don't know if I could do the NICU. I hope you have a great time next week and I'll keep my fingers crossed that you score some tickets!!!

Hi I was just diagnosed in July. I was wondering why you think your grandma had lymphoma because I had enlarged lymph nodes in my abdoominal area and this finally led me to get more tests. I have suffered what I thought was irritable bowel for years like 10 or 20 . Now I know it's celiac. I have been on gluten free since this last July 07 and I feel so much better . I live near Kent State U. I have not yet made many gluten free things except for Angelfoood cake.

Hi, I live about 3 miles from Kent State too and would love to connect with you. My adult son was told yesterday that he probably has celiac and needs to start a gluten free diet. He went through extenstive testing with a GI physician in Akron. Please get back to me as there is so much to learn. Thanks

Hi Mimzy,

Was your son told he does or probably has it. I first had a Upper GI with concentration on the small bowel this showed them a lot , then I had the blood test for celiac, then a EGD with biopsy and all of these showed it. I also had a liver Bx because of liver damage. What can I help you with. The dietitian was of no help to me I just have been searching the web. I have gotten a lot of foods at seven grains in Tallmadge and some at Mustard seed in Montrose.

Hi Michelann,

Thanks for getting back to me. I'm new to this message board and hoped I'd get some kind of notice when my message was answered by you. Sorry I took so long writting back. I'll figure the board out eventually. In the meantime shopping for gluten free food is the hardest part. We spent 3 hours in Cleveland at Trader Joes today. They have a ton of gluten free food with much better prices than I'd found locally ( Kent Natural Foods and Cappabiancos) Its just taking forever figuring out what are "safe" foods. I haven't looked in 7 grains yet but definitely will. The Dr. tested my son pretty throughly. He did blood work which showed that he carries the gene. He also had a stomach emptying test as he thought it might have been gastroparisis. That test was negative so then he did an endoscope and biopsy. The nurse that called with results was a little vague. She said he probably has Celiac and that the Dr. highly suggests he begin the diet as that will be the most definitive way to diagnosis. He also found that he has the H. pyloria infection. Its not related but requires major antibiotics. Anyway he will be starting the diet tomorrow and he has a follow up appointment in about 4 weeks. I guess as far as help I could use a shoulder.. Have you been to any support group meetings in the area? Maybe we can get together for a grocery shopping spree or go to a meeting. Lets stay in touch!

Guest Michelann

Hi Mimzy,

I tried to find your message and couldn't until today. I am new at this site also. so this is very challenging . I found Trader Joe's prices were very good compared to the two other places you mentioned. I did get on the mailing list at Seven Grains in Tallmadge they have the Nut Thins made by Blue Diamond for $2 a box compared to $3.29 other place, I really like the pecan ones the best. The Kent Acme has a few things in the organic area too. EXpensive though. Kreigers on Graham Rd also carries quite a lot in the back room area of the store

I haven't found a support group I guess I was using this to read and see what other are saying. I would love to meet sometime. I have actually gained weight since I have gone gluten free. The most frustrating thing is when you go to someone's house for a party or restaurant. It' is hard to eat . I haven't had much luck yet with my baking . I haven't tried to make bread just cookies that were thin as crackers and Angelfood cake. I have not found a premade bread that is good yet . I heard there is a bakery in Alliance that is gluten free. I also heard that the bakery in Stow at Oregon Trail Great Grains bakes gluten free bread but I don't know if I want to take a chance there with all the flour floating around for fear of contamination. I have been very careful. With all the problems this celiac has caused me I don't want to take any chances. Most manufacterers are very nice and some send coupons for the items they sell. Like Hilshire farm deli selects are fine to eat and they have sent me coupons. I don't go to the deli counters to buy meat I don't trust that they would clean the slicer enough from other gluten products. I also bought soft corn tortillas to use as rolups because bread is so dry and crumbly. I am not sure if we should post email addresses or phone # here or not. Let me know what you think. Michelann

Hi Lauren, I live in Ohio. Wellsville. South of Youngstown and north of Steubenville. It appears you are in Columbus? I'm new to this group and I have not been diagnosed but I have little doubt. Would love to get recipes.

Joe-

My husband and I currently live in Ashtabula, OH (up by the lake), but are planning to move to Toronto, OH shortly, as I recently got a job there. Where do you buy your gluten-free foods in the area? Is there anywhere besides Riesbecks that sells them?

Thanks!

If you haven't tried Anna's bread mixes you should!!! It is a great bread but if you were a town talk white bread person before going gluten-free the most likely you will not care for this bread. If you search the recipe section there is a great recipe by Lorka ( Laurie Crater) that everyone seems to love including my family. It is pretty forgiving so you can change the flours to whatever you have on hand. Plus there are so many good recipes from this site. There are many good gluten-free cooks on here.

By the way there is The Raisin Rack store in Canton & also near Columbus that carries much in gluten-free. Plus Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, The mustard Seed, Costco's has limited gluten-free another place is Jungle Jim's..Cindy's Health Food store in Warren, Ohio.

In October the Children's Hospital in Columbus has a nice conference with vendors so that is a good place to sample & buy on the spot.

I mentor in Pa (near Pittsburgh) helping people navigate through the gluten-free diet & finding their cravings.... if I can be of any other help please send me a private e-mail.

Ps. Carrabas in Boardman is a great place to eat gluten-free.

Hi Lauren, My name is Jan and I live in Canal Fulton, Ohio, so hey from Ohio too.

I have never been on this website so I hope I do it right. I am in desparate need of bread recipes, I especially need a bread recipe made with teff flour if you have one. Thank You SOOOOOOOOOOO much for sharing your recipes. My husband is Celiac, diagnosed about 7 years ago.

I hope this goes through.

My hsuband went to the Mustard seed last week and picked up a Pamela's angel food cake mix. I couldn't believe my eyes!!!!!!!!!!!! I have made this so many times but for some reason this mix would NOT thicken or double. I put it in the oven anyway and the whole inside carmelized---it was bizarre. I called the company right away and she said there were other complaints on this particular batch, so she sent me a free coupon for 7.00 to buy any product I wanted, which was very generous of her, but the darn thing was to be my puppies first birthday cake, go figure!!!!! I haven't gone to the raisin rack yet or Cosco's, but the new Buehlers in Massillon, Oh. has a nice variety of gluten-free products, but not enough variety for me. Thanks for responding to me, I appreciate it. What is your personal e-mail address, I don't know how to find it on the website---I am new to this.

Thanks again and have a great day.

Hello to Michelann, Mimzy and Janice Kelleher,

I am in the North Canton area. Just an FYI, we have a Raisin Rack that has a gluten free section. It's easily accessed from 77 south if you are at all interested. Take the Everhard Road exit. Turn left at Everhard (you will be staring at Westfield/Belden Village Mall) follow Everhard to Main Street and take a right. Go half a mile or so and Raisin Rack will be on your right. If you get to the Fisher Foods at 44th you've gone a few blocks too far. They have a support group that I think meets the first Saturday of the month.. I will have to double check on that. Also, local Giant Eagles and Clicks stores have been adding to their gluten-free sections as of late.

Chuck

You can search this site for prescriptions medications, but will need to know the manufacturer/maker if there is more than one, especially if you use a generic version of the medication: To see the ingredients you will need to click on the correct version of the medication and maker in the results, then scroll down to "Ingredients and Appearance" and click it, and then look at "Inactive Ingredients," as any gluten ingredients would likely appear there, rather than in the Active Ingredients area. https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/

Living with celiac disease can be especially hard when you’re in a smaller town and don’t have many people around who truly understand it, so you’re definitely not alone in feeling this way. Ongoing fatigue, joint pain, and headaches are unfortunately common in people with celiac disease, even years after diagnosis, and they aren’t always caused by gluten exposure alone. Many people find that issues like low iron, low vitamin D, thyroid problems, other autoimmune conditions, or lingering inflammation can contribute to that deep exhaustion, so it’s reasonable to push your doctor for more thorough blood work beyond just vitamin B. As for eggs, it’s also not unusual for people with celiac disease to develop additional food intolerances over time; tolerating eggs as an ingredient but not on their own can point to sensitivity to the proteins when they’re concentrated. Some people do better avoiding eggs for a while, then carefully testing them again later. Most importantly, trust your body—if something consistently makes you feel awful, it’s okay to avoid it even if it’s technically “allowed.” Many of us have had to advocate hard for ourselves medically, and connecting with other people with celiac disease, even online, can make a huge difference in feeling supported and less isolated.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @Cecile! It is common for those with celiac disease to develop sensitivity/intolerance to non-gluten containing foods. There is a high incidence of this with particularly with regard to dairy products and oats but soy, eggs and corn are also fairy common offenders. Like you eggs give me problems depending on how they are cooked. I don't do well with them when fried or scrambled but they don't give me an issue when included in baked and cooked food dishes or when poached. I have done some research on this strange phenomenon and it seems that when eggs are cooked with water, there is a hydrolysis process that occurs which alters the egg protein such that it does not trigger the sensitivity/intolerance reaction. Same thing happens when eggs are included in baked goods or other cooked dishes since those recipes provide moisture.  So, let me encourage you to try poaching your eggs when you have them for breakfast. You can buy inexpensive egg poacher devices that make this easy in the microwave. For instance:  https://www.amazon.com/Poacher-Microwave-Nonstick-Specialty-Cookware/dp/B0D72VLFJR/ Crack the eggs into the cups of the poacher and then "spritz" some water on top of them after getting your fingers wet under the faucet. About 1/4 teaspoon on each side seems to work. Sprinkle some salt and pepper on top and then snap the poacher shut. I find that with a 1000 watt microwave, cooking for about 2 minutes or slightly more is about right. I give them about 130 seconds. Fatigue and joint pain are well-established health problems related to celiac disease.  Are you diligent to eat gluten-free? Have you been checked recently for vitamin and mineral deficiencies? Especially iron stores, B12 and D3. Have you had your thyroid enzyme levels checked? Are you taking any vitamin and mineral supplements? If not, you probably should be. Celiac disease is also a nutrient deficiency disease because it reduces the efficiency of nutrient absorption by the small bowel. We routinely recommend celiacs to supplement with a high potency B-complex vitamin, D3, Magnesium glycinate (the "glycinate" is important) and Zinc. Make sure all supplements are gluten-free. Finally, don't rule out other medical problems that may or may be associated with your celiac disease. We celiacs often focus on our celaic disease and assume it is the reason for all other ailments and it may not be. What about chronic fatigue syndrome for instance?
    • FannyRD
I work as a renal RD and have a Celiac pt which has been rare for me (I might have had 3-4 Celiac pts in 15 years). I wondered if anyone can confirm that these medications are gluten free and safe for Celiac.  Ferric citrate (Auryxia)  Sucroferric oxyhydroxide (Velphoro)  lanthanum carbonate (Fosrenol) sevelamer carbonate (Renvela)   Thank you!
