Gluten Intolerance?

About a week ago I had some stomach aches and had D about two times. Did a BRAT diet and it helped but I noticed when I would eat crackers or toast that my stomach would bloat and burn. I got my D under control but then the lack of fiber caused some C and bloating/trapped gas.

Fast forward to today my latest symptoms are stomach bloating and burning in the middle of my abdomen. It's not a crazy pain but its very uncomfortable. When I eat it gets better.

I'm not sure if its a stomach ulcer or Gluten intolerance.

I have no bloody or black stools, no vomiting, no nausea or heart burn. Just bloating and abdominal pain/burning.

I have suffered from IBS symptoms for as long as I can remember and recently became lactose intolerant and now I'm wondering if I have been gluten intolerant all along also and now its hurting full effect.

I have a doctors appointment scheduled already for Thurs.

Hi Victor and welcome

When I finally got gastro symptoms I had that same burning sensation and suddenly dairy products were giving me D (although at the time I didn't dream it was celiac disease).  I always considered that I had a nervous stomach but just didn't put all these things together.

I think it is great you are seeing the doctor Thursday. Please ask to be tested for celiac disease and let us know how you get on.

The bloating is what's killing me. It's such an uncomfortable feeling. Feels like there's so much air that just wants to get out.

While you are waiting for testing perhaps try peppermint tea and take some probiotics - both measures really helped with the trapped wind. Also exercise.

MAKE SURE YOU CONTINUE EATING A FULL GLUTEN DIET UNTIL ALL TESTING IS COMPLETE.

Here are the tests for celiac disease:

-Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA and (tTG) IgG
-Deamidated Gliadin Peptide (DGP) IgA and (DGP) IgG
-EMA IgA
-total serum IgA and IgG (control test)
-AGA IGA and AGA IgG - older and less reliable tests largely replace by the DGP tests

-endoscopic biopsy - make sure at least 6 samples are taken

Oh no I had stopped Gluten for the last two days. I'm scared of the pain that may come although I know majority would be in my head now that I self diagnosed myself.

I'll be sure to tell the doctor about these tests.

The bloating seemed to come down after drinking alot of water and peppermint tea.

I also realized I was taking Gas X chewable which contains gluten.

squirmingitch Veteran

If you go off gluten then you will have to do a gluten challenge which is specified here:

Where in the world did you get that Gas X chewables contain gluten????? They do not.

From a few threads on here. Apparently one of the ingredients contains gluten.

squirmingitch Veteran

If those threads are old they could be worthless. Ingredients change & one has to check, not just rely on old threads or someone's suspicion or paranoia.

My god is it possible to feel the effects this fast? I had stopped Gluten for about three days then today I ate a bagel since you guys said to not get off gluten. My stomach started rumbling and churning, felt slightly bloated and had an urge to go use the bathroom withing 30mins or so...

squirmingitch Veteran

Yes, it's possible. It is quite common for celiacs to have really severe reactions if they have gluten after having gone gluten free. Besides needing to stay on gluten for the tests this is why we tell people DO NOT go gluten free until testing is complete & that includes an endoscopy. Despite our advice a lot of people decide they will go gluten-free until close to the time of the testing & they end up either testing negative or having such severe reactions they can not continue with the gluten until testing so they screw themselves up by not listening. A lot of docs will tell patients to go gluten-free before the tests because the docs DON'T KNOW the rules so even if a doc tells you it will be okay DON'T listen.

Victor10 Rookie

Damn I should have listened. Anyways the doctor appointment is this Tues so I should get some referrals for an endoscopy and blood work.

Good luck with the tests and the gluten challenge.  Don't overdo the gluten, you only need the equivalent of 1-2 slices of bread per day.  Some people find it helpful to leave the gluten until later in the day so their day is not as disrupted,

I don't see how cornstarch could alter the test results. Where did you read that?

For pain relief I take a combination of Thiamine (Benfotiamine), Pyridoxine B 6, and Cobalamine B12.  The combination of these three vitamins has analgesic effects.  I have back pain and this really works.  The B vitamins are water soluble and easily excreted.   Hope this helps!  Keep us posted on your results!

Welcome to the forum, @Xravith. I experienced similar symptoms before my diagnosis.  Mine were due to the loss of vitamins and minerals, essential nutrients we must get from our food.  With Celiac Disease, the intestinal lining, made up of thousands of villi, gets damaged and cannot absorb essential vitamins and minerals, especially the eight B vitamins.  The loss of Thiamine B 1 can cause muscle loss, inability to gain weight, edema (swelling), fatigue, migraines and palpitations.  Low thiamine can cause Gastrointestinal Beriberi with symptoms of nausea, abdominal pain and bloating.   Thiamine is only stored for a couple of weeks, so if you don't absorb enough from food daily, as the thiamine deficiency worsens physical symptoms gradually worsen.  If you're eating lots of carbs (like gluten containing foods usually do), you need more thiamine to process them (called high calorie malnutrition).  Thiamine works with all the other B vitamins, so if you're low in one, you're probably getting low in the others, too, and minerals like iron, magnesium, zinc, and calcium, as well as Vitamin D..  Talk to your doctor about checking for nutritional deficiencies.  Most doctors rarely recognize vitamin deficiency symptoms, especially in thiamine. Get a DNA test to see if you carry any Celiac genes.  If you do not have genetic markers for Celiac, it's probably IBS.  If you do have genetic markers for Celiac, it's probably Celiac.  I was misdiagnosed with IBS for years before my Celiac diagnosis.   Keep us posted on your progress. P. S. Deficiency in thiamine can cause false negatives on antibody tests, as can diabetes and anemia.

No she didn't because if I want to ask I have to pay 700$ for 1 hour appointment so I couldn't even ask. I read that fillers like cornstash can alter the result and tylenol contains it so that's why I tried to find someone who can answer.

Did the GI doc give you any rational for stopping the Tylenol during the gluten challenge? I have never heard of this before and I can't imagine a good reason for it. Ibuprofen, maybe, because it is an anti inflammatory but acetaminophen?  I don't see that it would have any impact on the test results to take Tylenol.
