Dermititis Herpetiformis- Celiac rash

Hi,

I'm new to this group (first time poster). I, as most of you spent a long time suffering before any diagnosis of my condition. I have many symptoms of celiac disease, mental and physical. When my diet contained gluten these presented themselves as anxiety, depressions, digestive issues, fatigue, muscle and joint pains and senstive skin. Since following a gluten free diet my symptoms have greatly reduced (Yay!) BUT I now suffer from Dermititis Herpetiformis. For those that aren't aware of it, its an uncontrollably itchy and then painful rash that I get head to toe for about 2 weeks after any contamination. It knocks me out for weeks because it seems to bring flu-like symptoms with it and makes my hands extremely painful due to the rash.

I have two main problems with this;

Dapsone, the drug you can take to reduce these outbreaks (I have such a bad reaction to it so I can't take it)

I get this reactions from products that should not contain gluten but must have some undeclared contamination risk. For example, I have had an outbreak over night and yesterday the only products I ate not officially gluten free were melon and potato waffles.

Does anyone else experience this? Is there anyway to reduce outbreaks without shopping solely in the gluten free section of the supermarket?

Hello and welcome to the forum!

i don't have a solution for you but I can tell you I had the same thing happen. After going gluten-free I was so extremely sensitive and the issue I had was the dh. I think I've read you can have flare ups even without gluten for quite a while. I certainly did! How long have you been gluten-free? I had flare ups and itching when I would even have foods that were supposedly less than or equal to 20 ppm. This went on for maybe a year? Something extremely ridiculous like that. Then one day my dh turned purpley and flattened out. Then one day it was a bit more skin colored and disappeared. Never had the problem since.

good luck with it. I'm sure some others will chime in with their advice and great knowledge as well. You found a great place to be! It's my safe haven.

      When my wife attempted to open the online card in the store with a cashier, it would not work. We then showed the owner the link to the card, the online receipt that I got upon purchase, and even my bank statement confirming the purchase. That did not satisfy her, since she said she needed the link to open to reveal the gift ID num. They even admitted they had a systems problem around that time.

      Was the card itself lost or just the record or both?

      We were flabergasted that the owner would not acknowledge a $50 e-gift card I purchased for my celiac wife. My wife tried to open it in the store and was informed there had been a system change and they could not find the record. No worries, she was told, just talk to management. Six months later, and numerous absurd back and forths, and the owner literally informs me there have been "bad actors", so she can't make good on this lost gift card. In other words, she accused me of lying and committing fraud... over $50! Please be careful with your orders and purchases here.

      Yes, some people do get withdrawal from gluten but gluten withdrawal doesn't usually cause gut pain. Maybe more like general body aches and discomfort. We have articles on gluten withdrawal on this forum. You might do a search for them. Applesauce is very acidic and some brands have added vitamin C (ascorbic acid) which makes them more acidic. This can damage the stomach lining if you eat it too often. Especially if your stomach lining is already compromised. Ibuprofen inhibits the body's ability to rebuild the stomach's protective mucosal lining. That's why it can cause peptic ulcers. As strange as it may sound, low level irritation/inflammation stimulates the body to rebuild the stomach lining. There are two steps in this rebuilding process known as COX 1 and COX 2. Ibuprofen represses both COX 1 and COX 2. Celecoxcib, a prescription anti inflammatory, inhibits only COX 2, making it less likely to cause damage to the gut lining.

      Do you or anyone know alot about ibuprofen  I wasn't sure if I was eating too much apple sauce.   Something is making my pain so much worse  I'm referring to the intense pins and needles in my feet and lower legs.  Jaw actually has tardive dystonia and muscle spasms throughout my back Almost like an opposite effect that a pain reliever would do. I'm fairly new to this. Whatever is going on seems to be worsening  Do people get a withdrawal effect from gluten?  It's extremely painful 😖  I'll post that question or research on the site  Thank you everyone for responding
