Gluten free before testing

Hi All,

Background:

I'm 54 years old and have been having major digestive, as well as many other symptoms, for at least 10 years. Back in 2010 I had my gallbladder removed and was told (after removal) that it was so severely scared they were surprised it was working at all, which it barely was, but no stones. The digestive symptoms worsened from there rather than improving. When I talked to a new GP a couple of years later after moving to a new state, she said simply,  "It's just IBS. There's nothing you can do about it." 

After tons of research over the past few years I suspect celiac disease, but I've become so disillusioned with doctors I decided to just cut to the chase and go gluten free without testing. I did it for two weeks, but cheated twice. However, I did feel A LOT better. Then I realized I shouldn't have done it without testing first so I went back to eating gluten, and made a doctor's appointment, which is one week away.

Summary:

Two weeks MOSTLY gluten-free. Now one week heavily back on gluten. Initial PCP appointment one week away (she says she'll be referring me to a GI - so she may not even be doing the blood test).

Questions: 

Have I totally screwed up the tests already or should it be OK if I just keep eating lots of gluten until all the tests have been done? 

What if my PCP does a blood test next week? Will that be too soon after my little "experiment"?

Can't really say for sure dear. You're supposed to be eating gluten everyday for the prior 12 weeks. The thing is, when you get into situations like this, is that when/if you turn up negative, the doctors tend to take that negative as gospel & refuse to re-test after you've been eating gluten for 12 weeks solid. I mean, I can guess & say that if you NOW ate gluten every day for a month, then you should be good to go so if you can put off the bloods for a month..... but I can't guarantee that will be the magic number. On the other hand, you may be fine doing the tests next week but we just don't KNOW nor does the doc. 

I wish I had a solid, pat answer for you. Boy do I ever wish that!

I will say that you don't have to eat a ton of gluten ---- just 1 slice of bread per day will do it.

      I don't see how cornstarch could alter the test results. Where did you read that?

      For pain relief I take a combination of Thiamine (Benfotiamine), Pyridoxine B 6, and Cobalamine B12.  The combination of these three vitamins has analgesic effects.  I have back pain and this really works.  The B vitamins are water soluble and easily excreted.   Hope this helps!  Keep us posted on your results!

      Welcome to the forum, @Xravith. I experienced similar symptoms before my diagnosis.  Mine were due to the loss of vitamins and minerals, essential nutrients we must get from our food.  With Celiac Disease, the intestinal lining, made up of thousands of villi, gets damaged and cannot absorb essential vitamins and minerals, especially the eight B vitamins.  The loss of Thiamine B 1 can cause muscle loss, inability to gain weight, edema (swelling), fatigue, migraines and palpitations.  Low thiamine can cause Gastrointestinal Beriberi with symptoms of nausea, abdominal pain and bloating.   Thiamine is only stored for a couple of weeks, so if you don't absorb enough from food daily, as the thiamine deficiency worsens physical symptoms gradually worsen.  If you're eating lots of carbs (like gluten containing foods usually do), you need more thiamine to process them (called high calorie malnutrition).  Thiamine works with all the other B vitamins, so if you're low in one, you're probably getting low in the others, too, and minerals like iron, magnesium, zinc, and calcium, as well as Vitamin D..  Talk to your doctor about checking for nutritional deficiencies.  Most doctors rarely recognize vitamin deficiency symptoms, especially in thiamine. Get a DNA test to see if you carry any Celiac genes.  If you do not have genetic markers for Celiac, it's probably IBS.  If you do have genetic markers for Celiac, it's probably Celiac.  I was misdiagnosed with IBS for years before my Celiac diagnosis.   Keep us posted on your progress. P. S. Deficiency in thiamine can cause false negatives on antibody tests, as can diabetes and anemia.

      No she didn't because if I want to ask I have to pay 700$ for 1 hour appointment so I couldn't even ask. I read that fillers like cornstash can alter the result and tylenol contains it so that's why I tried to find someone who can answer.

      Did the GI doc give you any rational for stopping the Tylenol during the gluten challenge? I have never heard of this before and I can't imagine a good reason for it. Ibuprofen, maybe, because it is an anti inflammatory but acetaminophen?  I don't see that it would have any impact on the test results to take Tylenol.
