When glutening strikes...

First off I want to thank everyone out there who uses this forum. Over the past year it's helped me a lot after being DXs with celiac. I wanted to give back to the community and decided it's time to post something about my experience.

A few nights ago, while on vacation I decided to eat something I KNEW had gluten in it. (was at a fancy restaurant in Spain and forgot to tell the waiter about my allergy but decided to order the steak which I assumed was gluten free, the whole thing had some pepper sauce over it and I was a few glasses of wine deep and didn't really care). BIG mistake, this was my first real glutening since I began my gluten free regiment 1.5 years ago.  

Like most of you who know.... the next 24 hours was a nightmare. Horrible cramping, horrible brain fog, groggyness, depressive thoughts, anxiety, chilly sweats... So I took whatever pain meds are available to me to combat the pain but nothing seemed to work!

Out of complete desperation, I decided to down a bottle of white wine. I know it sounds super counter intuitive (alcohol upsets the stomach) but it seems to be the only thing that helps. Maybe it's just the alcohol numbing the pain or maybe there is some sort of reaction that is happening that can help when someone gets glutented? I read this random article (non-scientific) https://vinepair.com/wine-blog/beer-and-wine-help-aid-digestion/ which is what led me to try this technique.

Anyways, I figured if I put this out there, maybe others have had a similar experience and can chime in.

      Shingles is dormant and related to chicken pox when one has had in the past.Shingles comes out when stress is heightened.I had my 3rd Shingles in 2023.

      Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute.
