Uncontrollable acid reflux

Anne01 Rookie

I was diagnosed 5 years ago, and like many on here my primary symptom was severe acid reflux.

I have been diligently gluten free since diagnosis and i have removed all foods i can think as triggers... eggs, dairy, cucumber, tomatoes, fatty foods.... etc .  I am currently taking 40mg tecta 2xdaily with up to 12 Gaviscon tablets daily to control breakthroughs..

i dont smoke, rarely drink, exercise daily ... im a few lbs overweight but currently working on losing the last bit. Maybe 15 lbs over the bmi .

Does anyone have any suggestions on what else i can do? I would really love to sleep a full night without waking up to acid.  Lol.  Also, i dont get any heart burn with it. ?‍♀️

I stop eating at 5 p.m. and take Acid Sooth right before bedtime, around 11 p.m.

I messed up my stomach as a kid almost ODing on energy drinks to the point of vomiting blood. Ever since then I always would be burping up acid, or having it just come up in my mouth making me spit it up...at night I would just hack it up. Seems the pumps would never turn off, doctors but me on a crazy regiment of Nexium and Ranidine. It does have some other issues I think it has cause, but If I get off of them the problem returns. But I take both twice a day before breakfast and dinner. Been on this since around 15 years.

Is your celiac disease active?   When was the last time your antibodies were measured?  Maybe it is time for another endoscopy.  It might not be celiac related at all.

My celiac disease is not active.  A recent endoscopy revealed healed villi, but biopsies revealed autoimmune gastritis (AG).  That was the cause of my acid reflux.  It was a relief to know I was doing well in the gluten-free diet.

When my AG acts up, I sleep elevated and avoid all food hours prior to bedtime.

Anne01,

See this thread.

https://www.celiac.com/forums/topic/122303-extreme-bloat-help/

try taking some BetaineHCL (powdered stomach acid) of 4 or 5 capsules with a meal and be sure to drink at least a couple glasses of water/tea which ever you prefer.

Water activates the BetaineHCL. .... so more is better.

Never take BetaineHCL on an empty stomach because it could cause burning.

Never take it without drinking water because water helps it work properly.

if this helps then you have low stomach acid being misdiagnosed.

Here is my story.

good luck on your continued journey.

I hope it helps I only know it helped me.

This is not medical advice but I hope it is helpful.

2 Timothy 2:7 Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.

@Celiacpartner, I agree with Scott. We have a food festival yearly in the town I live in, with artisan food stalls everywhere. I spoke to the owner of one of the artisan burger stalls, enquiring if the burgers were gluten-free when I said I was Coeliac ... he said he had a serious anaphylactic allergy to fish himself. He possibly carries an epi-pen or two everywhere he goes. I would go see an allergist as soon as possible as suggested.

After years of stable management, developing new symptoms to historically safe foods like nuts and fish strongly suggests a secondary issue has developed. It is highly unlikely to be a new gluten issue if the foods themselves are certified gluten-free. The most probable explanations are a new, separate food intolerance (perhaps to a specific protein in certain nuts or fish) or a true IgE-mediated food allergy, which can develop at any age. The symptoms you describe—cramps and the urge to vomit—can be consistent with either. It is crucial he sees an allergist for proper testing (like a skin prick or blood test) to identify the specific culprit and rule out a serious allergy, as reactions can sometimes worsen with repeated exposure.

Nuts are a common source of food allergy reaction/intolerance/sensitivity. But fish usually not. Of course, intolerances can develop to any food, whether or not they are common ones. I'm at a loss here.

Your doctor's recommendation to wait three months is very sound and aligns with general advice for celiac disease. While the acute GI symptoms resolve quickly, the autoimmune response and intestinal inflammation can linger, impairing nutrient absorption crucial for early fetal development. This three-month window allows your body to calm the immune response and for your gut to fully heal, ensuring you are in the best possible nutritional health for conception and pregnancy. In the meantime, focus on hydrating, eating nourishing, easily digestible foods, and resting—your body needs time to recover. It's a frustrating delay, but it's the best step for a healthy pregnancy.

He’s noticed it after having a few different kinds of nuts and nuts on top of a gluten free nut bar. and it’s happened after having some fresh caught fish, and tonight from packaged plain salmon from the supermarket. He has stomach cramps and feels the need to vomit to try and relieve the symptoms.
