Food allergies after fasano diet

BilliB

Recommended Posts

BilliB Apprentice

Ive been on the fasano diet due to dh, and antibodies being high. Im much improved, but have developed food allergies. Nuts, beans of various kinds, and now bananas. Full on swollen eyes, sore mouth, hives reaction.

My diet consists of milk, cheese, and butter successfully reintroduced. But keep reacting to yohurt.

Potatoes, squash, broccoli, cauli, cabbage.

Apples and oranges cause stomach pain.

And bananas. Until this week my mouth got sore and bumpy, then built up to eyes swelling etc directly after eating.

My insurance wont cover allergy tests.

Losing nuts was hard, now bananas. I need something sweet to eat

I manage a few drops of Tabasco, salt and braggs mixed herbs in small amounts.

Rice and corn are out.

Im actually starting to get scared. And am constantly hungry.

Any ideas?

The good news is that you are improving.  Consider doing a four day rotational diet with your foods.  Look up the Autoimmune Paleo Diet and the Histamine Diets (could be a reason you are reacting to yogurt).  Consider incorporating them into your rotational diet.   Look up Mast Cell Activation Disorder or Syndrome.  This can help explain your allergies.

Right now your immune system sounds like it is on “fire”.  Your goal is to calm it down.  Eating gluten free alone can help because at least you are not dealing with a constant celiac reaction, but your antibodies are up (blood) and those antibodies are still in your skin (DH).   It takes time for them to finally dissipate (like a year or longer....?.

Make a list of all your safe foods and divide them up into four days and eat those foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Eat plenty of fats to keep you full and provide calories.

Do you eat meat, fish or poultry?

I did the Fasano diet last year.  It sort of worked.  Found out that I had healed from celiac disease, but had Chronic Autoimmune Gastritis discoverd during a repeat endoscopy/biopies.  It all started a year earlier with a gluten exposure, tooth infection, flu , cold and I was a mess.  Developed daily hives and swelling.  I was allergic to even acetaminophen which is weird.  My allergist put me on a daily regime of antihistamines and I made diet modifications.  It took 6 months for me to stop reacting to anything.  I am off all meds now and my other Autoimmune Disorders have calmed down.   I am VERY careful about avoiding even tiny trace amounts of gluten.   I mostly consume dairy, veggies, some fruit and meats.  I avoid grains, legumes and processed foods.  Am eating them now these last few days prepping for Thanksgiving and I am not feeling my best.  But I will get back to my safe and effective diet tomorrow.

I hope this helps!

Thank you!

What an immense help!

I do have eggs, and pork. Im going to try other meat, even though im not keen on meat.

The dh is much clearer, but not totally gone. I eat no processed food at all either. But losing in shell nuts and banana has really thrown me.

Thank you so much for your time and help. Happy thanksgiving!,

What fruits can you tolerate? Im so sorry you are suffering like this too.

Hey BilliB, I have dh too & I did/do the Fasano diet. I did it strict for over a year, only I did not do rice as I already knew rice was out for me. I am still pretty much on the Fasano diet I guess you could say. I still do not eat anything processed excepting cheese & butter. I lost nuts too (except for almonds) but I am just starting to try them out again - so far so good. I did not lose them b/c of allergy but they just became  an additional food intolerance. I do zero grains at all & I have tried them, most recently I tried rice again as well as quinoa. They were both a no go. I eat a lot of meat, chicken, turkey, game hen, pork, beef. Have you tried avocados? I am wondering if you perhaps developed a latex allergy? The reason I ask is b/c of your reaction to bananas. I eat a lot of avocados & bananas. It's super hard to gain weight when you can't eat junk. LOL! I need weight but at this point, I don't think it's going to happen.

I can eat apples but I never, ever, ever, eat the skin. Lots of poisons in the skin!!! Apples get sprayed with tremendous amounts of pesticides & fungicides so I always peel them. I wash fruits & veggies with soap & water excepting head lettuce which you can only rinse well & peel off the outer layers of leaves.

Billi, I had a lot of trouble adjusting b/c I needed carbs to keep me going. I made my own re-fried beans (w/ olive oil) & they were a huge part of my diet & then I just kind of fell away from them & now I don't depend on carbs so much to keep me going. Somehow my body adjusted.

It takes time for those dh antibodies to get out from under your skin. Hang in there. I have found that I still have problems with  high iodine foods making dh flare. For some reason strawberries & the fruits with pits - peaches, nectarines, plums - must be higher in iodine. Also asparagus but I haven't tried that in about a year. I do watch the # of whole eggs I eat b/c the yolks are high iodine. I can eat all the egg whites I want & actually have become quite fond of fried egg whites. Get them nice & crispy. LOL!

I seem to do well with organic fruits but the area I live in is not very progressive & I can't get organically grown fruits & veggies most of the time. Sometimes I come across organic grapes & I chow down as long as they last.

BilliB Apprentice

Squirming, thank you for your reply. Whilst its good to know im not the only one suffering, I feel so sad for you to have to cope with this too.

I woke up today with a blistered mouth and very sore swollen eyes and lips. I feel horrible.

I did allow myself a cup of tea with milk (stash irish breakfast) and sugar in the raw

that  been previously safe. I also ate potato, eggs, butter and cheese. No banana.

I have to eat something. Ive lost too much weight, am constantly hungry. I dont enjoy food at all.

Right not I just want the blisters and swollen eyes to go away!

I do wonder if you are correct and its latex allergy, squirming. I ate two potatos yesterday.

BilliB,

I don't know if this is your problem or not but you might try leaving out the eggs for a week or two then retrying them in your diet.

They are a go too food for most gluten-free sufferers and while rare an Egg Allergy is a real condition.

Here is a mayo clinic article about Egg Allergies.

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/egg-allergy/symptoms-causes/syc-20372115

You might also research a low histamine diet and/or tyramines which can trigger an histamine reaction.

Here is a SFgate article about it.

https://healthyeating.sfgate.com/foods-histamines-tyramines-1208.html

I would also check out this thread about tyramines.  I doesn't answer all your questions but it could give you another place to look.

https://www.celiac.com/forums/topic/122922-very-sick-not-sure-i-want-to-go-through-testing-and-need-advice/?tab=comments#comment-997931

I hope this is helpful but it is not medical advise.

I wish I could be of more help but these are some of the things I would look out for.

I wouldn't want to give up eggs myself but it you feel better off of them you might want to try giving it  a trial of two weeks off of them before trying them again.

Eggs have also been strongly linked to atopic dermatitis.

see this research

https://www.deepdyve.com/lp/wiley/food-and-food-additives-in-severe-atopic-dermatitis-v25BNZDtZk

and the atopic dermatitis could be me mimicking DH like symptom's.

Again I hope this is helpful but it is not medical advise.

Oh Billie, I'm so sorry for you! You absolutely sound like you're getting allergic reactions to something. I would check out Posterboy's links. I also suspect the eggs. Eggs are one of the top 8 allergens so one has to put the proper weight on that possibility. And here's a thought...... perhaps it's just the egg yolk??? Maybe. Could be. I do know someone who can eat egg whites fine but if she gets the tiniest amount of egg yolk, she immediately throws up. At any rate, if I were you, I would cut the eggs completely for now as Posterboy recommends then later down the line, you can test different parts of the egg.

How about sweet potatoes? Can you eat them? Do you like them? They can be pretty filling & a nice change from regular potatoes. Whenever possible, opt for organics if they are available. I know you're not keen on meat but you've got to eat something......chicken or turkey might be less offensive to you than beef. Make a veggie soup out of the broth? Pots, carrots, onions, celery, gr. beans or peas, tomatoes.

Another possibility for allergy is milk. It is also one of the top 8 allergens.

Here are the top 8 food allergens:

The eight foods included in food allergy labeling account for an estimated 90 percent of allergic reactions. These eight foods are:

  • Milk
  • Eggs
  • Peanuts
  • Tree nuts (such as almonds, cashews, walnuts)
  • Fish (such as bass, cod, flounder)
  • Shellfish (such as crab, lobster, shrimp)
  • Soy
  • Wheat

Im going to go get medical help. Im wheezing, and my tongue is swelling.

After being diagnosed with celiac, then biopsy confirmed dh, I thought a bit of self discipline and a whole foods diet would be the end of it. Im devastated.

I'll check back after the ER.

Thank you all!

I get anaphylactic reactions from some foods randomly, certain things make reactions worse, Iodine enriched foods and salt and sea weed can make reactions worse, egg whites raw are a histamine liberator do look into it. Also research histamine foods and foods high in histamines...like yogurt etc. Might be a histamine overload and this can stack then burn you.
I keep multiple kinds of antihistamines around the house and on me, chewing a few and moutwashing with then slowly drinking a antihistamine drink can open the throat up and reduce swelling reactions in many, next best thing to a ebi pen.

Do be careful and keep a food diary, I ended up allergic to corn and whey almost a year after diagnosis.

cyclinglady Grand Master

I am confused.  You are dealing with two separate issues, correct?  DH and food allergies/intolerances?  DH Rash and hives?  Do antihistamines help with the hives?

Ask for this test:

“The only mediator of allergic inflammation measured by routine diagnostic laboratories is mast cell tryptase, a product of mast cell granules. It is secreted during anaphylaxis, rising to a peak concentration at 1-2 hours and returning to baseline by 6 hours, making it a suitable marker of mast cell degranulation during anaphylaxis in situations where the diagnosis of anaphylaxis is not clear (eg hypotension + rash during anaesthesia).
In a clinical study (Schwartz LB NEJM 1987), mast cell tryptase was found to be elevated only in patients with anaphylaxis and systemic mastocytosis, and not in patients with sepsis, myocardial infarctions or other hospital controls.”

hopefully we will hear from OP soon.  OP, please check your pillow and mattress for latex content.  also, no kiwi fruit for you, and warn all medical personal that it is a possibility.

squirmingitch Veteran

Yep, I came on hoping to see a post from the OP. Starting to get worried.

BilliB Apprentice

Sorry for worrying people!

The reaction had really taken off. Steroids et cetera later, im much improved, but feeling pretty awful.

Ive got to wait for the results of the blood tests, but latex allergy seems like the most probablr culprit.

..cyclinglady, forgive me for being unclear, im feeling so unwell.I have celiac disease, with dh, diagnosed 2, years ago. This was eventually controlled by the fasano diet. Over the last few months ive got swollen eyes. Sores in my mouth, no dh in the usual places any more than usual.

The allergies only seemed to develop after the fasano diet and my celiac improving!

Im steering clclear of eggs and latex foods until get test results through.

Thank you for your help everyone. Im hungry and unwell snd miserable but at least not so puffy!

cyclinglady Grand Master

Glad you are okay.  Besides your bed, check for bandages and clothing items (e.g. latex in socks) if latex is the culprit.

My allergies (hypersensitivities) developed over the years and are probably not directly related to celiac disease though autoimmune is under the umbrella of hypersensitivity.

This Wikipedia link explains hypersensitivity easily.  For more detailed information Google it.

squirmingitch Veteran

I am glad to hear you are improving although I know it really took "it" out of you. Rest, lots of water to flush your system. When you get the test results back, you need to get your doc to prescribe you an epi pen. Meanwhile, it wouldn't be a bad idea to keep a bottle of liquid Benadryl on hand. That stuff saved my life twice when I was a kid. I am anaphylactic to penicillin & my uncle was a doctor. I was mistakenly given penicillin, mom called Uncle Bob when she saw I was having a reaction, he asked if she had a bottle of Benadryl & told her to use a spoon to hold my tongue down if she had to & just pour the entire bottle down my throat & he would call the ambulance while she got the Benadryl in me.

Ive been so sick!

I was diagnosed with a latex allergy on top of the celiac disease. I also have to steer clear of peanuts, almonds, pistachio, cashews.

I used to be able to tolerate dried cranberries. My mouth started tingling.

Basically, im hungry. No nut butters, nuts, dried cranberries. I live on veg, a little egg, pork and fruit. I can manage hard cheese in small amounts. A little butter. Certified olive oil.

Can anyone think of a 5ppm gluten snack thats easy to take along, needs no refrigerator, can go in my purse. Im scared of starving at this point.

The allergies are worse than the celiac!

cyclinglady Grand Master

I think you should push to see  an allergist.  Who diagnosed you with a latex allergy?   This does not sound like just a celiac issue though that could be compounding the problem.

Starving?  Eat more of your safe foods.  Portable foods?  Get a small cooler.

BilliB Apprentice

Diagnosed by allergist.

The celiac is under control.

Im struggling with allergies.

I was hoping for safe suggestions of easy to open food, that needs no prep.

Chips, candy, snacks.

I cant always be home to steam veg, or haul a cooler.

cyclinglady Grand Master

With all your allergies, I would be hard pressed to recommend anything.  There are plenty of certified gluten free foods in most supermarkets, but it must fit your specific allergy requirements.  Did you get any help (treatment or advice) from your allergist?  Can you get a referral to a dietitian?

I carry a cooler just about everywhere I go.  I just got into the habit.

MyGerbs has seeds and dry fruit free from the top allergens.
EnjoyLife is also free from most allergens.
If sunflowers are alright there is SunButter, use it like peanut butter but allergen friendly.
Whole foods that you know are safe are your best bet, create list of foods you can eat, now see what you can take for snacks.

BilliB Apprentice

I cant afford more medical treatment. I struggled to pay.for allergy tests.

I suspect ive developed a mast cell issue.

Sunbutter is a good idea, ill try that if its cheap. I never see enjoy life, but I'll look for it. I cant order online as im currently living in my vehicle/camping.

What can I make, on a camping burner, thats made from veg (minus tomato and onion),'and is portable, and doesnt need a utensil to eat? I cant think of anything. Ive one pan and a small skillet. Something I can make and nibble on.

Any ideas?

Boiled Broccoli/carrots/potatoes in bit of meat in large chunks, drain the water and you eat the pieces? You can use herbs instead of spices for flavor to avoid nightshades and give some flavor.
Regular potatoes are in the same family as tomato, peppers. Sweet Potatoes are a different family IE not nightshades and wrapping in foil they can be cooked in a fire, on hot coals, or a burning pile of leaves (Japanese style).
You can wilt greens like spinach, kale, chard, mustard greens etc. in a skillet with a bit of water with seasonings you can have some nutritional yeast like braggs to give a cheesy flavor, maybe black pepper and salt, maybe some basil, rosemary, or thyme you know a bit of itlian herb.
Budget wise Brown meat, then add in some shredded cabbage, grated carrot, bit of aminos, pepper, salt, saute til tender for a easy take on stir fry.
If you are OK with eggs then omlettes with any kind of veggies and meat you can have.
What about fish? I can tolerate small amounts of fish and love some canned tuna or salmon sometimes.

Milk wise not nut or dairy, they have Ripple Pea milk, and Good Karma Flax milk. These are nut and dairy free, a tad bit to soups or saute veggies might be fine.

Are you Ok with avocados? Might be a good fat source?

BilliB Apprentice

I live on boiled or steamed veg pieces, olive oil. I cant afford meat often. Butter gives me indigestion, but I sometimes eat it for calories. My diet is appalling.

If I cant cook one day, I get dietz and watson prepacked deli meat and some mature cheese, plus a pear. Easy to eat, can just open and go.

I dont eat much potato, but well boiled a few hunks are still ok.

Avocados are out, sadly.

Baked sweet potatos in the campfire work.

Its the days when I won't have camping which are hard. There is nothing I can eat from fast food joints.

Terra chips are too.salty. Popcorn was a huge no no.

Jerky is expensive if I buy it and cant eat all of it due to a reaction

Im very depressed.

Thank you for the suggestions, ennis. The yeast sounds like flavor! Ill try it. Ive seen it around.

BilliB Apprentice

Fish seems to set off hives. I'll try it again when im feeling more well.

Pea milk! Does it taste ok? I did wonder about pea chips, but there is so many ingredients and sodium in them.

Ive got some dietz and watson swiss sausage, which needs no refrigeration, not dared to try it yet. Its that kinda stuff. No refrigeration or cooking needed that would help. Too much fruit causes pain.

Ichthus is the Greek word (using English letters) for fish. The letters in the actual Greek word form an acronym that come from the first letters in the Greek words for "Jesus", "God's Son," "Savior".   Now, back to your family's denial of your celiac disease, I think you can relate to this:
    • Mantooth
Thanks for the kind words. It's hard to convince my doctor to investigate further because of a negative blood test and he only tested me for one marker. 🙃 I've come to the point where I need to take this into my own hands because the doctors are infuriating and it's not going anywhere. I've been gluten free for a week and feeling better but I was still consuming dairy and I think that's what's backing me up. Next week no dairy introduced.
    • nanny marley
Hello mantooth nice to meet you it's so uncanny what you wrote you sound just like me even the back issues are exactly the same and I'm new here too trying to find out if I have the same had I too have been struggling to find answers with my docters I don't have a diagnosis but I've been struggling like forever and was told ibs and health aniexty was my problem but on researching I've come to the conclusion it's probably more because i cut gluten and lactose out for 6 months and  it was a incredible change for me so although I can't help with diagnosis I can say your not alone in trying  to find answers 😊
    • nanny marley
I call it the fish because I can't spell the other word at times 🤣 don't want to make myself look silly but yes I have this symbol on many items so nice to see it today wen I'm needing help  gives me faith I'm on the right track
    • nanny marley
Yes I have the fish symbol on my car and my ring 🙏 and yes I've been going for years to the docters but I got that feed up ov having to avoid eating out or even visiting people threw aniexty of needing the toilet or of gas or sickness I did some research of my own and I did the elimination diet and what a difference I've had my family think I'm nuts at times saying it's in my head it won't help until they now are doing it too because my daughter's are facing the same issues it's made me feel so ill at times it's so crazy how food can do this to you one night I was up 6 times to the point I had nothing left in my body I didn't go to the toilet for days after and I felt sick has a dog I'm so glad I found this forum I feel a little more human already 😄
