Can anyone tell me about their experience on Dapsone? I just started it yesterday. I will do anything to relieve this horrible rash.

I do not have DH....but from what other members have said, Dapsone works.  There are some very serious side effects.  Most members try to rely on the gluten-free diet long term.  It is your best defense!  However, they must be very strict.  Most do not eat out and they avoid even processed gluten-free foods.  They tend to experiment once the DH resolves.  But it can take months to years for the antibodies to work their way out of the skin.

Browse through the DH section for valuable tips (like avoiding iodine in your diet or using ice packs).

Good luck!

Hello!  It took me about 3 days to really start to feel a difference.  After about 2 weeks it was great!!

I will say though, I didn't seem to be able to completely heal and stop the DH entirely until I quit dapsone and cut iodine.  It was like it just slightly lingered....I also didn't feel great too after a couple of months of dapsone even though my blood tests were okay, although just barely in the okay range.

I still have some at home...more for an emergency if I get really bad again.  I won't go back on it unless I absolutely have to.

I recommend, drinking a lot of water and no iodine (one piece of salmon gives me a terrible DH breakout).  I eventually did keto as a way to cut and really limit my food choices too because I kept messing up...I am extremely sensitive to cross contamination....even certified gluten free food sometimes gets me.

Dg’d Dec. 2006

Hey, took dapsone for 2 years non-stop but it truly was the determined effort of maintaining a gluten-free diet as much as I could that contributed to flare ups lessening and eventually disappearing. Only took 25mg. Yes you heard correctly, only 25mg of Dapsone daily and within a very few days I completely cleared. My Dr. inquired after over a year how was I doing on the Dapsone in staying cleared up? I informed still no flare ups and only 25mg daily. He was shocked and shared that two new patients after I was Dg’d have been on Dapsone at 250mg daily and both were still so broke out with flare ups. Obviously, neither were diligent in maintaining 100% gluten-free diet was his prognosis and mine.

Dapsone is a very dangerous drug that can and will cause the listed side affects. Just past 2 years of 25mg daily dose, I developed 2 of the listed side affects… blurry vision, and a nodule growth on my hand. Stopped Dapsone right then and there; maintain gluten-free diet as much as I can to prevent flare ups, and gut issues.

** If you got DH you also have celiac disease; just a matter of time before the gut also starts reacting to the gluten. I only started having gut issues 5 years ago. Digestive system all out of whack now.

Hope this helps…

      @N00dnutt, been there, done that! Cheers!

      @trents You're right, thanks for pointing that out. On @somethinglikeolivia comment regarding potential ingesting or cross contamination; there is a product marketed in Australia as "GluteGuard" which is designed for just this scenario. It is not a defence for and is not recommended for use by full-blown celiac disease but, it helps those with GI. I'll be reading slower in future so I don't skim over the subject matter. Cheers.

      @Knitty_Kitty Noted with appreciation.

      @N00dnutt, as OP explained earlier, she had a gastroscopy done earlier while she had been eating plenty of gluten for months. It was negative despite strong positive antibody scores.

      The best way to determine positively is to undergo a Gastroscope. Your Endocrinologist will assess the condition of your "Villi". These tenticles are what extract the nutrient from what we ingest. The Protein in Gluten is like acid to these tenticles.
