I e-mailed Annie's about their allergy precautions/procedures in manufacturing recently b/c of some concern over a dressing, and I thought I'd post their response below:

Allergen Statement

(Salad dressings, Marinades, BBQs, Worcestershire)

Our manufacturing facilities meet the highest standards of cleanliness and quality control protocols and adhere to Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulations, as defined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The plants are inspected by the FDA. No peanuts or tree nuts or their by-products are present in the plants. No crustacean shellfish are present in the plants. The equipment is used to process products containing wheat, dairy, soy, egg and anchovies. The plants are certified organic.

Annie’s Naturals’ west coast facility is HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) approved. A plant that has a HACCP plan has met the FDA’s standards to ensure food safety and to eliminate cross-contamination of the eight major allergens (dairy, eggs, soybeans, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, fish, crustacean shellfish). For more information on HACCP, go to Open Original Shared Link.

At Annie’s Naturals’ east coast manufacturing facility, all lines are flushed and equipment is cleaned between productions. Standard production protocols are followed to eliminate cross-contamination.

If you have additional questions, call our customer service line at 800 434-1234 x313. For further information on Current Good Manufacturing Practices, go to www.cfsan.fda.gov/~lrd/cfr110.html.

That's great info. I got very sick from one of the salad dressings. It could have been a cross contamination issue as I am very sensitive.

Thanks Jen, when I go out to eat at some place new, I always carry my Annies with me in case I can't order anything else. I've eated more salads than I every wanted to in the past six months... but that's ok.

What salad dressing did you all get sick from? I used to eat salads all the time with annie's dressing for lunch, but have been making larger dinners lately and now just eat leftovers for lunch. You all getting sick is scary to me b/c I am so sensitive too and eat other annie's stuff all the time. I wonder about their ketchup and mustards......

since not all of Annie's salad dressings are gluten free, just make sure each time you buy a bottle check for the gluten free label... They had an issue with the BBQ sauce a while back, not sure what it was, but some of the BBQ sauces that are usually labeled gluten free were not and when I called I couldn't get a straight answer... finally got a call back from someone that just told me to look for the bottles that are labeled gluten free... dunno, maybe they were temporarily trying a new recipe that they ended up using in the Organic line which is not gluten-free...

all that being said, I haven't had any problems with any of the salad dressings as long as they've been labeled gluten-free.

I have had no probs with the gluten-free dressings. I love hte dill with yougurt and the cesar!

Annie's Roasted Red Pepper is my fav. with no problems. It would also be good to merimade some shrimp or scollups (how do you spell scollups  )

oh well.. you get my point.

I always check for the gluten-free label, but good reminder....I'm just wondering about jevan and what she got sick from....Jevan, did it say gluten-free? If it did and you still got sick, which one was it (that is, if you feel comfortable sharing)?

BTW - does this forum now re-write acronyms (sp?) - it spelled out gluten free for me when I only put the intials.....

lotus-- I wanted to know b/c I had some weird gluten-free responses from the Tuscan Italian (which is my favorite). It might have been some food intol to the veggies on my salad or fructose. Hard to tell! I don't necessarily think it was the dressing, but was curious if anyone else had ever experienced anything. I've never had a problem with the Raspberry. It may just be a richer/higher fat dressing than I used to eat, and that throws me over the edge sometimes....

Becky6 Enthusiast

That's a bummer! Have you tried the no fat yougurt and dill? It is pretty good I think!

bluelotus Contributor

That's what I hate the most about celiac disease......if you get sick, it could have been almost anything, whether that's cc from the companies or your home, hidden gluten, whatever.....Sorry that happened and hope you are feeling better.

glad to hear they are so careful. I can't get through a day without cowgirl ranch!

The Annie's dressings in Canada don't say gluten-free on them. Just like the Thai Kitchen products too. I just have olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper on my salads for now.

You may also need to supplement with B12 as this vitamin is also involved in iron assimilation and is often deficient in long-term undiagnosed celiac disease.

@par18, no, Scott's use of the term "false negative" is intentional and appropriate. The "total IGA" test is not a test used to diagnose celiac disease per se. The IGA immune spectrum response encompasses more than just celiac disease. So, "total IGA" refers to the whole pie, not just the celiac response part of it. But if the whole pie is deficient, the spectrum of components making it up will likely be also, including the celiac disease response spectrum. In other words, IGA deficiency may produce a tTG-IGA score that is negative that might have been positive had there not been IGA deficiency. So, the tTG-IGA negative score may be "false", i.e, inaccurate, aka, not to be trusted.

This may be the problem. Every time you eat gluten it is like giving a booster shot to your immune system, telling it to react and produce antibodies again.

Scott, I am mostly asymptomatic. I was diagnosed based on high antibodies, low ferritin (3) and low vitamin D (10). I wasn't able to get in for the biopsy until 3 months after the blood test came back. I was supposed to keep eating gluten during this time. Well why would I continue doing something that I know to be harmful for 3 more months to just get this test? So I did quit gluten and had the biopsy. It was negative for celiacs. I continued gluten free with iron supps and my ferritin came back up to a reasonable, but not great level of around 30-35.  Could there be something else going on? Is there any reason why my antibodies would be high (>80) with a negative biopsy? could me intestines have healed that quickly (3 months)?  I'm having a hard time staying gluten free because I am asymptomatic and i'm wondering about that biopsy. I do have the celiacs gene, and all of the antibody tests have always come back high. I recently had them tested again. Still very high. I am gluten free mostly, but not totally. I will occasionally eat something with gluten, but try to keep to a minimum. It's really hard when the immediate consequences are nil.  with high antibodies, the gene, but a negative biopsy (after 3 months strict gluten-free), do i really have celiacs? please say no. lol. i think i know the answer.  Asa

I have had a long year of testing unfortunately still not diagnosed , although one thing they definitely agree I'm gluten intolerant, the thing for me I have severe back troubles they wouldnt perform the tests and I couldn't have a full MRI because I'm allergic to the solution , we tryed believe me  I tryed lol , another was to have another blood test after consuming gluten but it makes me so bad I tryed it for only a week, and because I have a trapped sciatic nerve when I get bad bowels it sets that off terribly so I just take it on myself now , I eat a gluten free diet , I'm the best I've ever been , and if I slip I know it so for me i have my own diagnosis  and I act accordingly, sometimes it's not so straight forward for some of us , for the first time in years I can plan to go out , and I have been absorbing my food better , running to the toilet has become occasionally now instead of all the time , i hope you find a solution 🤗
