there's pf changs and outback in the area. there's a lot of fancy restaurants that could almost certain accomodate you. and you might try googling for vegan restaruants in the area - there's a raw/vegan place in fountain valley that isn't too far from los alamitos that has a number of things you can have. (it's called au lac, and there's a website for it if you google the name.)

Thanks so much Tiffany

I have the gluten-free menue from pf changs/outbacks so that' a start.

Thought I'd email or call some of the people from the support groups that are around that area. Got them off the home site here on celiac.com

Where do you live Tiffany? Our son lives in Hollywood and my mother in law in Los Alamitos so we'll be going from one place to the other. We also wanted to go to Santa Calalina Island. I'd love to stay over nite but heard it was expencive. Been cking on line but not getting much detailed info. Have you been there?

I'm here in LA. There is a whole foods in Hollywood on Fairfax and Santa Monica that has lots of gluten-free stuff, for a store in that area.

I've had fabulous luck with Gulf Stream and Houstons in Century City, they are a higher end chain, Houstons is steak, Gulf Stream is fish, owned by the same people.

The Stinking Rose on La Cienega ( in hollywood) let me bring my own bread to enjoy thier roasted garlic and told me all the ingredients of thier "secret sauces". They were super-helpful and modified stuff for me. Thier Mojitos are awesome too. Again in the mid-high price range.

There is a Thai chain in La called East Wind, there are 5 around LA, and they have been great but I do have my Thai version of the Triumph cards that I use with them.

There is another Thai place on Cahuenga above Sunset called Chan Darae, but again, would be helpful to have the Thai language cards.

IN and OUt is a burger chain here that is out of this world. They are all over.

Order a burger protien style, no sauce, don't do the grilled onions, and ask them to use a clean grill cause you're "allergic" to wheat. Thier french fries and shakes are safe. ITS ASTOUNDING. If your relatives live here, they know what In and Out is.

If you'd like, PM me and I'll give you my cell, if any gluten emergencies come up. I can't think of any, but what the hey, right.

I'm not sure I know where Los Alamitos is, and I've never been to Catalina. I hear its really pretty though.

I'm no longer in SoCal (moved to Seattle a few months ago), but used to live just south of Los Alamitos. There's a Whole Foods down that way as well (I forget which city...) and a Mother's Market in Huntington Beach that has some fun stuff. You'll probably find a bit more in LA proper, rather than Orange County.

thanks so much to all of you for your help. :)

The last thing I want is to have the big 'D' while out there.

Elonwy-I'm going to take you up on your KIND offer of your cell phone #. How generous and supportive you are.

In Los Alamitos, you should try the sweet and sour cabbage rolls at the Katella Deli. They are to die for! You can call me too if you can't find your way around. I live in Anaheim, about 15 minutes from Los Alamitos area and will be happy to show you around. In Huntington Beach you can eat safely at Sparks. It overlooks the pier right downtown. The chefs wife is celiac and he loves to accomodate our special diets. Also a Vietnamese place called Pho Republic in Anaheim. Wonderful! Wendy

Dear Wendy--

I can't thank you enough for your generous offer.

You won't believe this but I used to teach in Anaheim. It's been years ago but we used to go to the top of our apt building and watch the Disneyland fire works everynite. Gosh, can't remember the name of the street now but about 4 blocks from it. I taught at the Betsy Ross Elem school. Is it still there?

You know I think it was off of Katella...After i married we lived in a garden apt off Magnolia.

wow small world. We are coming to see our son and it's so funny, Elonwy on the forum, has given us some great ideas. It seems she works right across the street from where our son works.

Funny your name is Wendy...because I just got glutten so badly there on Tues nite. Just starting to feel human today... ;) After that I've been really worried about the 'food' issue while traveling and we don't want to spend our time out there COOKING...I HATE COOKING ANYWAY.

You've given me some great ideas esp around Los Alamitos cause that's where my husbands mom lives and that's where we are staying. We have been to Hoff's Hut. Is that a good safe place to eat? we also ate in a mexican place in a big shopping center at the end of her street. She lives on Magnolia in Rossmore.

We love Huntington Beach so Sparks is great to know, esp if his wife is celiac...

We are going to Santa Catalina Island for a nite. Have you ever been there?

I'd love to have your cell # if you want to give it to me in a pm

I know that there are Trader Joe's out there but not where it is..

Thanks again..

Hi Judy,

I live in Hollywood. There is a Trader Joe's on Santa Monica Blvd a few blocks west of La Brea. It's in a little strip mall kind of back from the street. Technically, the Trader Joe's is in West Hollywood. The Whole Foods is wonderful that Elonwy mentioned (don't eat from their deli though, whether you are gluten-free or not :o ). There's a Whole Foods about every 6 feet in this town, it is hard not to find one :)

There's a raw foods place in Santa Monica city at 6th and Broadway called Juliano's Raw that is $$ but delicious and I think everything (?) is gluten free.

Email or pm me if you need anything while you're out here merika @ merikaonline.com

What's wrong w/ the Whole Food's deli? (just curious)

Judy,

I grew up in Beavercreek (outside of Dayton)

and then I lived in Columbus for 7 years (went to OSU)

I miss it sometimes (particularly during football season)

I've been violently sick from it several times pre-gluten-free and have many non-gluten-free friends with the same experience. Somebody in charge there is just not keeping the food fresh/safe. Yuck!

gosh, everyone i can't begin to tell you how

much this has helped and so appreciate you taking the time to answer.

Bronco did I mention on this thread that I lived in Worthington N of Columbus and went to OSU too. Nice to have a good team to watch other than the Eagles..

You guys ROCK :P

@Jane02, I hear you about the kale and collard greens.  I don't do dairy and must eat green leafies, too, to get sufficient calcium.  I must be very careful because some calcium supplements are made from ground up crustacean shells.  When I was deficient in Vitamin D, I took high doses of Vitamin D to correct the deficiency quickly.  This is safe and nontoxic.  Vitamin D level should be above 70 nmol/L.  Lifeguards and indigenous Pacific Islanders typically have levels between 80-100 nmol/L.   Levels lower than this are based on amount needed to prevent disease like rickets and osteomalacia. We need more thiamine when we're physically ill, emotionally and mentally stressed, and if we exercise like an athlete or laborer.  We need more thiamine if we eat a diet high in simple carbohydrates.  For every 500 kcal of carbohydrates, we need 500-1000 mg more of thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  If there's insufficient thiamine the carbs get stored as fat.  Again, recommended levels set for thiamine are based on minimum amounts needed to prevent disease.  This is often not adequate for optimum health, nor sufficient for people with absorption problems such as Celiac disease.  Gluten free processed foods are not enriched with vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts.  Adding a B Complex and additional thiamine improves health for Celiacs.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine helps the mitochondria in cells to function.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins.  They are all water soluble and easily excreted if not needed. Thank you so much @knitty kitty for this insightful information! I would have never considered fractionated coconut oil to be a potential source of GI upset. I will consider all the info you shared. Very interesting about the Thiamine deficiency.  I've tracked daily averages of my intake in a nutrition software. The only nutrient I can't consistently meet from my diet is vitamin D. Calcium is a hit and miss as I rely on vegetables, dark leafy greens as a major source, for my calcium intake. I'm able to meet it when I either eat or juice a bundle of kale or collard greens daily haha. My thiamine intake is roughly 120% of my needs, although I do recognize that I may not be absorbing all of these nutrients consistently with intermittent unintentional exposures to gluten.  My vitamin A intake is roughly 900% (~6400 mcg/d) of my needs as I eat a lot of sweet potato, although since it's plant-derived vitamin A (beta-carotene) apparently it's not likely to cause toxicity.  Thanks again!

Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?

I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.
