Actually Feel Kinda Lucky

After reading all these threads of people who were wrongly diagnosed for so many years I almost feel lucky that my father has celiac disease. At first I was experience stomach discomfort and diarrhea after eating wheat grains and started to think I had celiac disease. So, I figured I would just go enjoying any food as long as possible without finding out if I did indeed have the disease. Then after searching the net for symptoms I realized all the serious complications that can develop if gluten continued in my diet. I also have been so skinny my whole life, and figured it would be great to gain some weight as well. I broke my hand recently (in a really stupid way; yep alcohol was involved), and realized that it probably should not have broken that easily and there is a good chance it could be from celiac disease (if I do indeed have it).

So, I decided to get tested. I went to my family doctor to get tested or get a referral to get tested. The nurse asked me why I was there, I told her to get tested for celiac disease. She responded, "Never heard of it". Then after talking to the doctor for a few minutes it was clear that I knew more about the disease from an hour of reading than he did. I think it is safe to say, that I would have never been referred to get tested, if it was not for the fact I knew about the disease due to my father and specifically requested it.

Tomorrow I get the blood test. I am almost hoping I have it, because it would explain the problems that I have been having. I would rather it be celiac than something way more serious.

After reading all the post people misdiagnosed for years and years, I find it amazing that my dad was correctly diagnosed over 30 years ago when he was living in Brazil, by a Brazilian doctor. Also, I was tested when I was younger, but it came up negative.

I'll let you know my results, and how informative the doctor is of celiac disease.

Your Dad was probably diagnosed because he was outside of the US! The US really lags behind other countries when it comes to celiac knowledge and diagnosis. I hope your test goes well and you get the answers you are searching for.

Welcome to the board :)

It sounds like you have a very reasonable GI doctor, who diagnosed you based on family history and symptoms after eating gluten. I would consider you lucky! The other option would be to make yourself very sick by doing weeks of a gluten challenge prior to an endoscopy.

Hi Colleen H,   I suffered with the pins and needles/burning feeling in my legs and feet for at least  6 years until my Nephrologist figured out that I had to go on a low salt diet.  He said my kidneys weren't strong enough to remove the salt.  The simple fix was a diuretic, but that med leaves the uric acid behind, so that wasn't an option.  On the bright side the low salt diet lowered my BP over 20 points and and the pins and needles/burning feeling went away.  Good Luck and hope this helps.

I did ... But aren't we going to be vitamin deficienct if we are not eating due to being sick ?? If the food we eat is gluten free and we have other sensitivities , how do we get out of the cycle??  Thank you
