hi guys, I'm still in the process of trying to figure out all my intolerance's, I had soy sauce [gluten-free] wed night and my stomach was not great yesterday, then I had a tofutti marry me ice cream bar after lunch today [soy] my stomach is bloated like I'm 6 months pregnant, terrible gas and severe cramping..could this be a result of the soy? do you have these symptoms...I want to die right now

I remember reading or hearing somewhere that celiacs tend to have trouble with dairy and soy. does soy have anything to do with the villi like dairy?

thanks

Betty

Its common for Celiacs to have other food intolerances like soy and dairy--although not everyone is affected that way. I react to soy with cramping, gas and D. I avoid it like the plague! I do not believe that it does any damage to the villi, though.

ignorant question here ;) Is the soy in soy sauce and soy milk the same thing?

ebrbetty Rising Star

thanks Patti..I wish there were tests for intolerance's.. it would make things so much easier and a lot less painful.

both soy and soy milk are a form of soy [ I assume] so both would be a problem

When we put my kids on a gluten free/dairy free diet the pediatric GI said to try them with soy milk. Then he said, if they are soy intolerant you will know right away. He said it would be obvious because of the stomach cramping and pain, and many people get diarrhea. Fun!

My middle child was the only one to have a problem with soy ice cream and soy milk, the others just didn't like the taste and I already knew I was allergic to it (not intolerant), so we all avoid soy. My kids can all tolerate gluten-free soy sauce in moderate amounts. Everyone's tolerance level is different though. I still occasionally have gluten-free soy sauce or baked goods with small amounts of soy flour, but not often because I have to follow up the meal with Benadryl...then I get sleepy.

marianne, thanks for the reply. the weird thing is when I use the soy sauce for my chicken recipe the side effects is not as bad. I'm still paying for that tofutti ice cream and its been 6 hours!

every time I had a gluten-free bagel with tofutti cream cheese I thought is was the bagel bothering me..it must be the cream cheese.

Oh ebrbetty, I'm so sorry to hear that! I hope you feel better soon. Yeah, I would try going without soy for a while. If you eliminate other soy products then the soy sauce every so often would probably not bother you much. It doesn't bother my son once a week or so.

So if you are eliminating dairy and soy then life isn't so easy. For milk there are Vance's Darifree and Blue Diamond Almond Breeze (or personal favorites), and then there are some rice milks and other almond milks. But for cheese and ice cream, yogurt, cream cheese and such there just is no suitable replacement. I used to recommend the Mocha Mix frozen dessert, but not anymore. My oldest was vomiting all night once a week or so and we couldn't figure out why. We did tons of test on him and an EGD and colonoscopy and everything, it ended up he was having a bad reaction to the chemicals in the Mocha Mix! That's about all Mocha Mix is, just a bunch of flavored chemicals. But when you are dying for ice cream it was suitable. Now we don't go near the stuff...

Hi! My son is allergic to soy and has celiac symptoms (still in testing mode) He had allergy testing for the soy, but I saw that some soy sauces have gluten in them. Not sure about that, though. By the way, I have a recipe for soy sauce substitute if anyone is interested email me peace_lover@adelphia.net.

There are tests for intolerances. Check out Enterolab, York Labs or Immuno Labs. Claire

A friend of mine told me that they were using soy in newspaper ink, so I checked it out and found this website... www.ag.uiuc.edu/~stratsoy/expert/faqs/soyfaq6.html

It has a lot of good info on reactions to soy and sources.

So much for reading the paper and eating!!! My stomach cramps everytime I eat soy of any kind.

Hope this helps marcia

thanks everyone..my stomachs still not right today, guess its going to take awhile to calm down

I also have dairy and soy intolerances. Enterolab tests detected casein to show my dairy intolerance, but painful experiences when I tried to substitute soy told me I had soy intolerances. Almond Breeze chocolate milk contains soy lecithin. I'm not sure but maybe the Almond Breeze Vanilla flavor also contains soy. Some people can tolerate soy lecithin, but I can't. You may have to try that to find if you are that sensitive. I suspect if antibody tests for soy (Enterolab will do those) shows soy intolerance, you won't be able to tolerate even soy lecithin.

I have just figured out that I have a problem with soy as well. Can't do dairy, so I was drinking Silk and drinking soy lattes......not a good plan :( I feel extremely bloated and gassy. It seems almost as bad as my lactose intolerance. I have been able to do soy sauce in the past, but am interested to see if I can still do it or if it is too much. I now stick with OJ with calcium and Viactiv twice per day to get my calcium. I was doing very well on the gluten-free diet until I added in the Silk.

Hope you feel better soon!! I have BTDT and am feeling like that today after my soy latte from this AM. Won't be doing that again.

kim, what is BTDT?

I can't do dairy either, thats why I bought the toffuti ice cream bars, they were so good, but not worth this pain, gas, bloating

I just want to have a day without stomach pain!!

BTDT = Been There Done That

Sorry!!!

I hope you are feeling better today!!! I don't feel too bad today....just need to stay clear of the soy.

Mr J Rookie
...... Is the soy in soy sauce and soy milk the same thing?

i'll have a go at answering this. The soy in those products both come from the same bean part of the plant. The celiac type damage that is done by wheat is from the protein gluten component. Some believe that milk protein and soy protein can do similiar intestinatl damage (general term for intestinal damage is enteropathy). So theoretically soy sauce (gluten-free version) and soy milk both contain the same protein components so could do damage. However a lot of intolerances are not enterophathy but just uncomfortable symptoms like bad gas which is sometimes an inability to digest the offending item rather than an anti-body reaction.

if we are dealing with just an inability to digest then soy sauce has been fermented - partially broken down and enzyme inhibitors destroyed so would be easier to cope with, but can't really compare the 2 like that coz soy sauce is consumed in tiny condiment quantities < 1g protein per serve, whereas a glass of soy milk is something like 8g of protein.

if however we are dealing with celiac type autoimmune reaction then 1g is all it will take to do damage.

i'm not saying it doesn't do the same damage but i'm not convinced it always does for those with the anti-bodies. this is based on the anti-casein (milk) antibodies that enterolab have found running around my system. The vagus nerve impulses to my stomach showed some substantial restoration after going gluten-free, but later going CF didn't seem to make a difference. i've also re-introduced goat dairy recently and still achieved a little bit of further gastro recovery.

changing the subject a bit here -->

unfortunately i don't get immediate symptoms from getting glutened, instead it silently destroys me. The vagus nerve mysterioulsly shut down on me some time ago (that means gastro-paresis - paralysed stomach - awful- food won't move thru system). I was devastated and wondering if its previous restoration was coincidence and not a result of the gluten-free diet. then i traced a likely offender as a Thai snack containing soy sauce. most soy sauces in thailand are gluten-free, and my wife had verified with manufacturer, but this was accidentally a different product in deceptively similar packaging - version of soy sauce not gluten-free. i was consuming i estimate < 0.5 of gluten from this product daily for about 1 week. fortunately after 1 week of ceasing eating this product my stomach started operating again ( i say operating, but the best i can achieve is partially operating, my digestive troubles are far from over).

i haven't been tested for soy anti-bodies but i've come to the conclusion that it probly isn't good for me - i frequentlly feel hyper and weird after consuming tofu, so ive stopped taking it just in case it is doing nerve damage to me ( i have mild peripheral neuropathy too).

this may not sound very scientific considering my enterolab casein diagnosis and the similarity of the casein and gluten peptides, but i don't think that dairy does me any harm.

cheers,

Mr J

so do you have celiac or not? 🤔 why are your vision issues undiagnosed? 😢 what does your ophthalmologist say?  do you have a serious vit A deficiency? what do you take for it? how long have you had celiac disease and how long did  it take to get a diagnosis?   if you are legally blind there are adaptive devices that will help you. I have vision difficulties as well but did not qualify (at least not yet)   do you have a vit A deficiency? why are you undiagnosed? what does your ophthalmologist say? I have a retinal specialist and he tells me my eye condition can not be fixed- until/unless it gets to the point of where surgery is safer since the surgery can leave me actually blind... so you want to wait til it gets really bad 🤪     I hope you find what works for you.    PS   the medication I started at the same time as the gluten challenge is obvious from the condition it's trying to treat. you can google it 😉 it is not an for any auto immune condition.

@catnapt,  I apologize.  Obviously I've confused you with someone else.  I have vision problems due to undiagnosed Celiac complications.  Being legally blind, y'all look the same from here.   You still have not said which new medication you started taking.  Parathyroid disorders can affect antibody production.  Bone Loss Correlated with Parathyroid Hormone Levels in Adult Celiac Patients https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36619734/ Effect of vitamin B1 supplementation on bone turnover markers in adults: an exploratory single-arm pilot study https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12075007/

during the gluten challenge I did not consume any wheat germ   the wheat germ is TOASTED - it's the only way it is sold now afiak doesn't matter I consume vast amounts of lectin containing foods PROPERLY prepared and have for well over a decade. They do not bother me in the least.    no anemia however the endo who ordered the celiac panel is the one who suggested the 2 week gluten challenge of eating at least 2 slices of bread per day or a serving of pasta- ALSO put me on a new drug at the same time (not a good idea)  I ate 4 slices because they were thin, or 2 English muffins, and just once some lasagna that someone else made since I stopped eating wheat pasta years ago. The English muffins caused some of the worst symptoms but that pc of lasagna almost killed me ( not literally but the pain was extreme) during those 12 days there were at least 3 times I considered going to Urgent Care.   This entire process was a waste of time TBH due to being on that new drug at the exact same time. it is impossible to tell if the drug I am taking for the possible renal calcium leak is working or not- given the dramatic response to the gluten challenge and resulting nausea (no vomiting) and eventually a loss of appetite and lower intake of foods so now I have a dangerously low potassium level   I don't have a simple case of celiac or no- I have an extremely complicated case with multiple variables I am seeing an endocrinologist for a problem with the calcium sensing glands - that system is very complicated and she has been unable to give me a firm diagnosis after many tests with confusing and often alarming results. She also appears to be inexperienced and unsure of herself. but I don't have the luxury of finding a new endo due to multiple issues of insurance, lack of drs in my area, money and transportation. so I'm stuck with her At least she hasn't given up    in any case I can assure you that lectins are not and never were the problem. I know they are a favorite villain in some circles to point to, but I have ZERO symptoms from my NORMAL diet which DOES NOT contain gluten. The longer I went without bread or foods with wheat like raisin bran cereal, the better I have felt. my body had been telling me for several years that wheat was the problem- or maybe specifically gluten, that remains to be seen- and stopping eating it was the best thing I could have done   I almost had unnecessary MAJOR SURGERY due to joint pain that I ONLY have if I am eating bread or related products I assumed it was the refined grains - never really suspected gluten but it does not matter I won't put that poison in my body ever again not that it is literally poison but it is def toxic to me

@catnapt,  I'm sorry you're having such a rough time.   How much wheat germ and how much gluten were you eating? Lectins in beans can be broken down by pressure cooking them.  Do you pressure cook your beans?  Were you pressure cooking your wheat germ? What drugs are you taking?  Some immunosuppressive drugs affect IgA production.  Do you have anemia?
    • catnapt
oops my gluten challenge was only 12 days It started Jan 21s and ended Feb 1st   worst 12 days of my life   Does not help that I also started on a thiazide-like drug for rule in/out renal calcium leak at the exact same time No clue if that could have been symptoms worse 🤔
