Preparing For Our Summer Vacation (any Info Would Be Wonderful!)

Hey there!

I'm so excited... we're going on our first ever family vacation in June to PA! My son who is 5 1/2 is asking every day "how much longer" and I've started the preparations to get our little family there safely and to make a trip full of lasting memories... I'm jsut worried about the food since our whole family is gluten-free (my son and I are the Celiacs but my husband and baby girl are gluten-free as well).

We'll be staying in Quakertown PA, which is about 45 minutes from Sesame Place Park. Then there's Sesame itself... do I ask them to fax a copy of their menu? Do I call and get permission to bring in outside food (it specifically states no outside food allowed) how do I do this?

Also- we'll be going to the Philly Zoo, and other areas of Philidelphia as well. I heard that there was a gluten-free bakery (Mr Ritts Bakery?) in Philly... anyone ever been?

Any information that you have would be helpful... area restaurants, how to go gluten-free at Sesame or the Zoo... what gluten-free foods to pack for a week's car travel, etc.

Thanks friends!

I live about 25 minutes from Quakertown! Check out Jules This Crust Pizza in Doylestown (Open Original Shared Link). They have awesome gluten-free pizza!!

If you are staying at a hotel, explain the situation ask if they can provide you a little fridge and microwave. They should be able to accomodate you. As far as the park type places, you should be able to bring in your own food - but call to make sure. Or pack the food in a cooler, leave it in the car and when hungry go eat. If you can avoid eating the food at these places, try to.

Pack:

applesauce

raisins and raw nuts

just about any fruit - except maybe bananas they don't travel well

juice boxes

rice chips

Carrots

Envirokids cereal

Celiac disease is the most likely cause, but here are articles about the other possible causes:

Hi @Atl222 As @trents points out, there could be many reasons for this biopsy result.  I am interested to know, is your gastroenterologist concerned?  Also, are your blood tests showing steady improvement over the years? I remember when I had my last biopsy, several years after diagnosis, mine came back with with raised lymphocytes but no villous damage, too! In my own case, my consultant wasn't remotely concerned - in fact, he said I might still get this result even if all I ever did was eat nothing but rice and water.   My coeliac blood tests were still steadily improving, albeit slowly, which was reassuring.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @Atl222! Yes, your increased lymphocytes could be in response to oats or it could possibly be cross contamination from gluten that is getting into your diet from some unexpected source but not enough to damage the villi. And I'm certain that increased lymphocytes can be caused by other things besides celiac disease or gluten/oats exposure. See attachment. But you might try eliminating oats to start with and possibly dairy for a few months and then seek another endoscopy/biopsy to see if there was a reduction in lymphocyte counts.

This is a solid, well-reasoned approach. You’re right that “koji” by itself doesn’t indicate gluten status, and the risk really does come down to which grain is used to culture it. The fact that you directly contacted Eden Foods and received a clear statement that their koji is made from rice only, with no wheat or barley, is meaningful due diligence—especially since Eden has a long-standing reputation for transparency. While the lack of gluten labeling can understandably give pause, manufacturer confirmation like this is often what people rely on for traditionally fermented products. As always, trusting your body after trying it is reasonable, but based on the information you gathered, your conclusion makes sense.
