Weight loss and malabsorption?

Hi all I’m newly diagnosed and I’m just baffled by all this if I’m honest and worrying if this is normal I’m eating loads of food and can’t seem to put weight on but before I was diagnosed I’d put weight on so easily I’ve stayed around the same for 2 weeks or I either drop a pound or 2, I think I’m also suffering malabsorption I’m not opening my bowels as much as I would and when I am it’s a mushy stool but I don’t feel constipated or I haven’t got any stomach aches does anyone know what would cause this or if they’ve had a similar experience? I suffer health anxiety and always think the worst so now I’m convincing myself I have another condition

Hi Danni

Welcome to the forum!

I continued to lose weight for a while when I was first diagnosed, from memory, and I actually thought I'd never put it back on.  However, now my gut has healed it's back again, perhaps with a bit more!

When you say you are newly diagnosed, how long ago was it?  And what tests did they offer - was it just blood tests or did you have an endoscopy and perhaps did they give you a colonoscopy too?

Newly diagnosed with? Celiac Disease? Gluten sensitivity?

It is common for celiacs to also react to CMP (cow's milk protein) and oats like they do wheat, barley and rye. You might try eliminating those two things for a period of time and then if you heal and things improve, add them back in one at a time.

It is also unusual for those newly diagnosed to have a clear picture of how and where gluten is found in the food supply, particularly in processed foods. There is a learning curve and you still may be getting gluten in your diet regularly without realizing it.

You sound like me.  I was diagnosed last fall via blood test with a 'borderline' positive.  Waiting on a colonoscopy, but that is months away thanks to COVID. I also have crippling anxiety so i've already jumped to worst case scenario.  I was 235-240lbs but overhauled my diet to cut out gluten and sugar.  I seemed to plateau at 200 for a while, which is an ideal weight for me, but have I've started to drop again which has caused my anxiety to explode.  Of course I am now thinking colon cancer or something as equally horrible.  Cutting gluten has made a big difference, so that aspect is what's keeping me somewhat grounded.

Hi Danni!

I am not a medical professional. So, please don't take this as medical advice. Have you been able to talk to your doctor about your concerns? I'm 1 year post celiac diagnosis. I also have some anxiety issues. It is really stressful, especially when you are first learning. Having a good counselor has helped me as well.

I would suggest that you also cut out oats and dairy for awhile at least. I personally react to them.

Just because something says it is gluten free, it doesn't mean that it is totally gluten free. Make sure you read labels.

In cutting out gluten, have you introduced any new foods? Sometimes I think that it takes time for my gut to "recalibrate".

Hope this helps.

Welcome to the forum, @Art Maltman! Ask your physician to order serum antibody tests specifically designed to detect celiac disease. That's the place to start but you shouldn't be on a gluten free diet some weeks before the blood draw. You certainly have some symptoms that are characteristic of celiac disease and you have a first degree relative that has celiac disease. So, I think this would be an appropriate request to bring to your physician. Here is an article outlining the various serum antibody tests that can be ordered when checking for celiac disease:   The physician may not be open to ordering a full panel but push for at least these two: total IGA and tTG-IGA. By the way, absence of gut pain is very common in the celiac population. We call them "silent" celiacs as they have no or very minor symptoms. There are over 200 symptoms and spinoff health issues that have become associated with celiac disease and the range of symptoms and effects produced by the disease in different individuals various tremendously.

About 5 Months ago I got a little bit sick and since then I have been having trouble focusing, rembering, thinking thought through, having pressure on my head and even just talking to friends normaly has become a challange. I also have been having yellowish poops. My father was has celiac but I am not sure if thats what is causeing my problems becasue I dont have any abdomnial pain like him. i have also tried going gluten free for a week with no results, but maybe i just need to try for longer. I have gone to doctors but they haven't had really any ideas as to whats wrong with me they just say it could be anything and try this drug maybe it will work. I really am tired of feeling terrible all the time and if any one knows if these symptoms are common to celiac or has any other ideas whats wrong with me please let me know.
