No symptoms

Hi everyone, hope to get some advice from here as my doctors dont seem to take me seriously 😕

I came across an article online about gluten sensitivity/celiac after trying to figure out the cause of my hormone imbalance. I dont have any serious symptoms of gluten sensitivity (or if so, they are mild that I never really noticed). What triggered me was that celiac can cause floating stool. I have had floating stool since I can remember (normal color), but never thought anything of it. I decided to try go without gluten and after about three weeks now my stool stopped floating.

My question is if this means I deffinetly have gluten sensitivy/celiac or gluten can make my stool float even without having any health complications? My doctor doesnt think much of it and thinks a gluten test is pointless since I dont have any serious symptoms…

Thank you!

Yes. Many celiacs are what we call "silent" celiacs. That is, they have few or no classic digestive distress. That's not to say, however, they will never develop it.

Floating stools suggest you are not digesting fat properly and that is a classic symptom of celiac disease. It's related to the damage done to the small bowel villi by persistent inflammation as the body is attacking the gluten, it being perceived as a threat by the immune system. Fatty stool would not be a symptom of gluten sensitivity as with non celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) there is no damage done to the small bowel lining.

If your floating stools go away when you eliminate gluten that says a lot. You need to get tested for celiac disease. If physicians won't cooperate, there are home test kits available for around $100 USD. You take a small blood sample and send it off to a lab.

Welcome to the forum!

I do think it would be worth getting a blood test for celiac disease in this case, and agree with @trents that many people have few noticeable symptoms. Have you had your iron and vitamin D levels checked? Low levels are another possible symptom that lead many to a diagnosis (as well as fat in stool).

You would need to keep eating gluten daily until you are tested.

Thankyou for that information yes I totally relate to that it's a very good read and I've felt like that too to the point were going out for dinner was aniexty before I even left home and it's funny her name is jean because that was my grandma's name and I also  believe she  coeliac undiagnosed because I look back now and she couldn't tolerate most things like me unfortunately she got bowel cancer it's such a shame it's so unrecognised by the medical profession and by people too who do t suffer it because it can be very hard living with it so thankyou so much for this

Ichthus is the Greek word (using English letters) for fish. The letters in the actual Greek word form an acronym that come from the first letters in the Greek words for "Jesus", "God's Son," "Savior".   Now, back to your family's denial of your celiac disease, I think you can relate to this:

Thanks for the kind words. It's hard to convince my doctor to investigate further because of a negative blood test and he only tested me for one marker. 🙃 I've come to the point where I need to take this into my own hands because the doctors are infuriating and it's not going anywhere. I've been gluten free for a week and feeling better but I was still consuming dairy and I think that's what's backing me up. Next week no dairy introduced.
