Unable to Gain Back Weight Regardless of Vitamin Supplements

Hello all!

I hope your holidays were well and that you’ve taken rest well. 
 

Over this holiday season my family has pointed out and continuously teased me about the “unhealthy” weight loss I’ve had. I’ve read lots of posts here about a major symptom being weight loss and after starting to take B-12 vitamin supplements, I have gained back my energy but no weight at all. And because if this, my family will not stop calling me as thin as a twig. 
 

I eat three meals a day with exercise every other day as well as snacks in between, however, I cannot gain back the 30lbs I had lost and I am now still losing weight. I’ve had to buy so many new clothes because my old ones don’t fit and I am especially frustrated because I was excited to wear a new dress that previously fit me this New Year’s Eve, but it very baggy now. 
 

Is there any advice out there on how to maintain a healthy weight or perhaps keep the negative thoughts away on my body image?

You need All Eight  B vitamins!!!

The B vitamins all work together.

Thiamine insufficiency will cause weight loss.

Try a B Complex vitamin and extra thiamine (benfotiamine) to correct your weight loss.  

When deficient in thiamine, the body switches from burning carbohydrates consumed in the diet to burning fat. 

You are burning off your fat stores faster than your body can replenish them.  

Thiamine insufficiency can occur in as little as a month because thiamine cannot be stored for long.

You might also look into high protein shakes to help you put weight back on, but be sure they are labelled gluten-free. 

I'm not sure how long you've been gluten-free, but if you were recently diagnosed with celiac disease it can take months for your villi to heal, but the main thing is to be 100% gluten-free and eliminate all sources of contamination:

Comments on weight--especially from family--are unhelpful, unnecessary, and often wholly unwelcome. I'm sorry that you're having to put up with that. 

You mentioned you gained back your energy. That's fantastic! Now you get to decide where to go from here. How do you feel about your current size? If you've got your energy back and are not dangerously underweight, there's no reason to gain weight just to appease those nagging family members. Using an app like MyFitnessPal to log calories and measure portions (using a food scale is the best way to do this accurately) can help to make sure you're not undereating. Alternatively, those tools can be used to put you in a caloric surplus if you'd like to gain the weight back.

Try calculating your TDEE and eating 500 calories above your calculated maintenance calories per day for a few weeks. That amount will put you on track to gain about 1lb/week. Here's a tool for that: https://tdeecalculator.net

If nothing is working, push your doctor for a full thyroid panel. Celiac and thyroid conditions can show up concurrently in some people (I am one of them)!

      On Saturday I got glutened so badly that I had to go to the Emergency Room at the hospital.  I only eat in restaurants approximately 2 times a year.  We went to a pizza place that has gluten free pizza.  They show nutritional information about all their menu items and it seemed I could get all the ingredients for my gluten free pizza.  Now I read that pizzerias are one of the top places to get glutened.  About 2 hours later, I started vomiting and having diarrhea.  I couldn't stop vomiting, I was dizzy, pouring sweat and I was shaking so much.  I have never felt so sick in my life.  The hospital gave me Zofran and a bag of saline and I went home a few hours later.  Yesterday I sat in the recliner and sipped Pedialyte and ate gluten-free crackers all day.  I felt weak and nauseous.  Today I feel better, but weak.  What else should I do to recover from the gluten assault on my body?

      Normal vitamin D range us from 20 ng/ml to 100 ng/ml.  200 nmol/L is the same as 80ng/ml. Minimum vitamin D is based soley on preventing Rickets and osteomyelitis.  Othe research is considered irrelevant insufficnet proof.   My 25(OH)D level is just over 80 ng/dl.  It took 8 years of 10,000 IU a day to get here because Celiac Disease causes low D.  In 1952 the UK banned all vitamin D supplementation due to a error.  Most of the world followed suit.  In the western world vitamin D deficiency ranges from 40% of the US to 60% in the UK. If you had an office with workspace for 30 to 100 workers, but you were restricted to less than 50 workers, how well would the office run.? A factory worker has 40 ng/ml,  A lifeguard has around 80.  Who's immune system works better?       Welcome to the forum, @Mpanknin! Questions like that really have no definite answer. Even if you tested a container of it for gluten content, the test results would only be good for that production batch. Assume it has some degree of CC. A more important question might be, how sensitive are you to minor amounts of gluten exposure?

      I have Celiac, and I just found out that HCTZ has gluten in it, and also makes you severely constipated versus diarrrhea!!  I need another medicene for blood pressure that is certified gluten free, without the 20 ppm, and doesn't cause constipation, please!!

      Thanks Wheatwacked. My D is normal. I take B12, B6, and a bone health supplement (I'm 67) that has K1, Calcium, Magnesium, and a bunch of other things. But no thiamine. But I will have my doc add it to my next blood draw. Thanks for the info WW!
