Tooth Discoloration

I know that loss of enamel can be a symptom of celiac, but would it start to happen after 8 months gluten-free? My dd's two front teeth are looking sort of gray and you can see that the enamel is just going away or wearing down. she has definitely had some gluten accidents, but for the most part has been 100% gluten-free.

What do you all think? I am going to call the dentist tomorrow to hopefully have her seen, but I'm not sure how knowledgeable this dentist is about celiac disease and all of the symptoms of it.

Just wondering if anyone else has dealt with this.

I'm full of questions the past couple of days, aren't I?

Shannon

My son has both celiac and diabetes. His dentist feels that his enamel problems are caused by both of those medical issues. We're hoping that his adult teeth aren't as affected.

I called the dentist today and she said that I should stop giving Ella vitamins with extra iron because that can cause the darkening of the teeth. I guess we'll go with that for now and see how it goes. I had been giving her the vitamins with extra iron because she has suffered so terrible with hair loss due to all of this and we wanted to make sure she was getting all she needed to ensure he hair grew back in properly and that no more comes out.

I can definitely see that in addition to some graying of her teeth, which may be from the iron there is also loss of enamel. It's obvious where it is missing so I'm not sure if there's anything that can be done for that.

hopefully we get it all figured out and like you said, hopefully it won't affect their adult teeth!

One of my kids had grayish-brown stains right where the front top teeth meet the gumline when he was 20 months. The first dentist we took him to wanted to knock him out and do restorative work. The next dentist we tried said that it was likely from the ironsupplements and/or the antibiotics I was given when I was pregnant with him, and that it wasn't necessary to do anything. His adult teeth have not had any such stains on them. I have not had him tested for celiac, but his eczema and occasional mild tummyaches disappeared when I limited his gluten, so for allI know, his teeth might have been affected by it after all, I'mnot sure.

My son's teeth are terrible. The first thing I noticed was when his teeth first started coming in, one just had a huge hole in it. There just wasn't any enamel there. Decay started immediately, so I took him to the dentist as an infant. He put a temporary filling on it. He has had so many cavities. It's just awful. Every time I go the dentist says that I need to stop giving him so much sugar and brush his teeth. I brush his teeth constantly and have always limited his sugar intake. My husband is daibetic, so we don't even keep much in the house. I left in tears last time. My son screams the whole time and normally he is very well mannered. I know they think I'm a terrible mom, but he is terrified to go. I've found total of 5 cavities so far and 2 are definitely defects. I think the others are too, just smaller ones that aren't as noticeable. His teeth are discolored too, but that's the least of his problems. I pray his permanent teeth will be better, espcially now that he's off gluten. Let us know what your dentist says!

Shannon,

I stumbled onto this while looking to see if Poly Vi Sol is gluten free.

I see where you asked this back in March, but I don't know if you ever got an answer to your question about tooth discoloration.

I am currently taking Ferrous Sulfate, generic for poly vi sol iron for infants, and my teeth will turn grey if I don't reduce it by adding it to a liquid first. And drink it through a straw.

The info sheet tells you to use a straw, but I didn't read it until after I got the problem.

BTW, it clears up after about 24 - 48 hours of watching how I ingest the iron.

Hope this helps. Marcia

Thank you.

I actually did take her into the dentist and they got it off her teeth. They told me to wipe her teeth off if I noticed it again. It was just from excess iron. I haven't really had a problem with it since, actually!

Thanks for your suggestion though. :)

Wheatwacked, are you speaking of the use of potassium bromide and and azodicarbonamide as dough modifiers being controlling factor for what? Do you refer to celiac reactions to gluten or thyroid disease, kidney disease, GI cancers?
    • Scott Adams
Excess iodine supplements can cause significant health issues, primarily disrupting thyroid function. My daughter has issues with even small amounts of dietary iodine. While iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production, consistently consuming amounts far above the tolerable upper limit (1,100 mcg/day for adults) from high-dose supplements can trigger both hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, worsen autoimmune thyroid diseases like Hashimoto's, and lead to goiter. Other side effects include gastrointestinal distress. The risk is highest for individuals with pre-existing thyroid conditions, and while dietary iodine rarely reaches toxic levels, unsupervised high-dose supplementation is dangerous and should only be undertaken with medical guidance to avoid serious complications. It's best to check with your doctor before supplementing iodine.

In Europe they have banned several dough modifiers potassium bromide and and azodicarbonamide.  Both linked to cancers.  Studies have linked potassium bromide to kidney, thyroid, and gastrointestinal cancers.  A ban on it in goes into effect in California in 2027. I suspect this, more than a specific strain of wheat to be controlling factor.  Sourdough natural fermentation conditions the dough without chemicals. Iodine was used in the US as a dough modifier until the 1970s. Since then iodine intake in the US dropped 50%.  Iodine is essential for thyroid hormones.  Thyroid hormone use for hypothyroidism has doubled in the United States from 1997 to 2016.   Clinical Thyroidology® for the Public In the UK, incidently, prescriptions for the thyroid hormone levothyroxine have increased by more than 12 million in a decade.  The Royal Pharmaceutical Society's official journal Standard thyroid tests will not show insufficient iodine intake.  Iodine 24 Hour Urine Test measures iodine excretion over a full day to evaluate iodine status and thyroid health. 75 year old male.  I tried adding seaweed into my diet and did get improvement in healing, muscle tone, skin; but in was not enough and I could not sustain it in my diet at the level intake I needed.  So I supplement 600 mcg Liquid Iodine (RDA 150 to 1000 mcg) per day.  It has turbocharged my recovery from 63 years of undiagnosed celiac disease.  Improvement in healing a non-healing sebaceous cyst. brain fog, vision, hair, skin, nails. same! how amazing you have a friend who has celiac disease. i find myself wishing i had someone to talk about it with other than my partner (who has been so supportive regardless)

They don’t give a sample size (serving size is different from sample size) so it is hard to tell just what the result means.  However, the way the result is presented  does look like it is below the limit of what their test can measure, so that is good.
