Ive been searching for other possible things that it could be and everything has led me back to possible celiac disease… my symptoms were….hands and feet ache like arthritis… boils on skin on breasts and rash like under breast on trunk…nausea after eating at times….bloating very tired and my bloodwork had elevated results…can someone please help if you have had same problem…..If this might be all it is It would save me all the stress of having the biopsy done…I went gluten free this past weekend and Ive already seen a change in my bowl…its not floating and the yellow color seems to be getting darker….my hands and aren’t aching like they always are.. tysvm everyone for your time ..

Welcome to the forum @Mizzpan!

When you say your bloodwork had elevated results, exactly what blood values were elevated? Have you specifically had celiac blood antibody tests done? There are specific blood tests done to check for celiac disease that are not part of a CBC or CMP. If you will be tested for celiac disease you must not begin a gluten free diet until all testing is complete or you will invalidate the testing. Many of your symptoms are classic celiac disease symptoms but could also be due to other health issues.

In addition to blood antibody testing for celiac disease, there is also biopsying of the lining of the small bowel in the area of the duodenum/duodenum bulb. Celiac disease damages the villous lining of the small bowel. It is an autoimmune disorder. This is done with an endoscopy and typically follows the blood antibody testing if any of the antibody tests are positive for celiac disease. If you are already having a biopsy done of the mesentery area you might ask about this.

Mizzpan Newbie

No  I havent been tested yet for celiac…this is something that Ive been looking into myself…I do know about not stopping the gluten to be tested but I had to see how My body reacted so that I can get my dr and his PA to listen to me and do the test for it before they do the dangerous biopsy…where these lymph nodes are is right with my aorta and There wasnt anything on CT or PET scan to suggest cancer ect…other than swollen lymph nodes….I keep telling then about my bowel movements and how I feel terrible after eating and bloat to look like im 9 months pregnant and all the other stuff but nobody listens….as far as my  bloodwork..my mean corpuscular hemoglobin is LOW…my mean corpuscular hemoglobin concent LOW…red cell distribution width HIGH….mean platelet volume HIGH…sedimentation rate westergren HIGH….CA-19-9 antigen HIGH..c reactive protein HIGH tysvm for the help……Im at wits end again tysvm!!

When a doctor isn't listening to their patient it's time to look for another doctor.

Mizzpan Newbie

So with everything…could this be celiac or wheat problem?

Yes, I think it could or at least account for some of the problems you are experiencing. You report a positive change already in stool consistency with just a short trial of gluten free eating. There are also third party celiac disease test kits that you can purchase for around $100 USD.

Tysvm for all the insight and help! Theres other symptons I have that i forgot to mention as well….Im starting a journey….Hopefully my dr’s office will listen and test me for it before they do other drastic things…if not like you said…time for a new dr….again tysvm

Hi Mizzpam,

Short answer:  Fix your Celiac and nutritional deficiencies and there is a good chance the messentary inflammation will heal on its own.

Treatment:  Mild cases of mesenteric lymphadenitis and those caused by a virus usually go away on their own. Full recovery can take four weeks or more.

As trents said Celiac Disease can be, and is likely, considering your improvement in just a short trial GFD.  If you can, resume eating 10 grams of gluten a day for at least two weeks and get the Celiac blood tests done and a Celiac endoscopy with biobsy.  If that is not possible, you don't need a phycian's approval to eat gluten free.  As my internist and prostate doctors said to me when I told them I ate gluten free: "Everyone has their preferences" I found new doctors.

But that is only the beginning.  Your symptoms are a result of malnutrition caused by damage to your small intestine on top of dietary deficiencies inherent in our western diet.  The most frequently described deficiencies in celiac disease patients at diagnosis are of iron, vitamin D, calcium, vitamin B12, folic acid and zinc.

Mesenteric lymphadenitis is an inflammation of the lymph nodes in the mesentery that attach the intestine to the abdominal wall. Mesenteric lymphadenitis is usually caused by an intestinal infection.   It is the job of vitamin D to direct the immune system.  Low D compromises that.  Get your blood level of D tested.  Normal level is 80 ng/ml but our indoor lifestyle,  the overemphasized fear of hypervitimosis D (very rare) and fear of UV rays causing skin cancer has driven the US population as a whole to 42% vitamin D deficient.   Vitamin D and the Immune System;  Vitamin D and inflammatory diseases;  Mayo Clinic: Vitamin D Is Not as Toxic as Was Once Thought

The big guns of the immune system is iodine.  Healing depends on iodine for apoptosis of defective, aging and sick cells.  In an oversimplication, Vitamin D targets the cell, lymphocites, T cells etc, coral them and iodine kills them, making room for healthy replacement.

My dr is out AGAIN till next wk and the PA that is replacing her refuses to believe my lymph node problem is from celiac…I had a whole reply typed out on here about my diet and its gone lol….Im new to using a forum like this so Im still trying to figure everything out. Im my own advocate seeing as though I have to deal with a PA that is pushing me to do things that I feel might be unnecessary and very risky..He was pushing me to have a radiologist at a small hospital do my biopsy on lymph nodes I refused he was mad thank god my dr came back and said absolutely not…that I would be going to U of R in the city to a specialist with experience with biopsies directly by the aorta… Im gonna wait for her to get back and if she doesnt wanna listen I guess Ill be moving on to a new dr.. everything is making more sense about my diet with what you posted…I dont eat eggs they go right threw me within not even 5 minutes at times…I cut out eating beef for a long time thinking I was helping my colon…liver is not an option with me I can't even look at it…lol  I do have fatty liver and I quit smoking.. it will be 2 yrs aug 1st..but I gained 50-60 pds…I dont get much sunlight im inside all the time due to excessive heat and humidity. Now that you all are giving me the info/ tools I need to try and get my self back on track I might stand a chance of being able to fix all this.. Ive felt so much better without the gluten the past few days I hate to have to go back to having some to be tested but thats the only way to figure this all out.. thank you ALL soooooo very much for all this information…please if anyone has anymore info that can help please let me know..

I refuse colonoscopy, prostate biopsy.  Have stopped 4 blood pressure meds and four glucose meds because they were debilitating.  As she said to me yesterday, most people want to eliminate the possibility of the most dangerous symptoms first.

I was diagnosed with prostate hypertrophy when I was 21.  Lived with it until I was 63 when I started taking Swanson Prostate Formula.  2014 Thanksgiving day I started GFD.  Before that bottle was gone in February, prostate shrank and has never returned.  Nevertheless my internist referred me to a prostate specialist, my PSA was high.  I declined and he told me to find a new doctor.  Eventually I went to the prostate guy.  He did digial rectal exam (normal) but still had high PSA so wanted to biopsy.  No one wondered why 2 out of 3 urine tests were contaminated.  Even though there are many reasons for high PSA, he went for the worst case scenario first.  Statistically I had a 20% of neural damage, incontinence, etc from the biopsy.  At my age I have less than 1% chance of dying of prostate cancer in the next 10 years,  Why would I possibly agree to the surgery?

If you find the right doctor, they will work with.

You can take phosphatidyl choline or choline supplements. Phosphatidyl Choline, 840 mg (per serving), 90 Quick Release Softgels PiningRock.com $12.  I usally take 4 day.  Cheaper than eggs.  It should start helping quickly.  Dealing with nutritional deficits one you replete and get to the level you body needs (and is always more than the RDA) results are quick.  Notice how quickly your responded to GFD.  Most Celiacs suffer from multiple deficiencies.

Low Choline has been proven as a cause of Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and recovery from critical disease.  Worth $15 to try?

Evidence has accumulated that hepatic steatosis, which occurs during parenteral nutrition therapy, develops as a result of choline deficiency because endogenous production of choline from parenterally infused methionine is deficient. In addition, memory deficits and skeletal muscle abnormalities have been described, and choline deficiency appears to activate cellular apoptosis... The upper limit for choline intake is 3.5 g/day in adults. This is the lowest level at which an adverse effect has been seen in human beings in which it induced hypotension. Shapira et al, administered 6 g of oral choline to PN-dependent patients without consequence, presumably because of their malabsorption. This dose together with correction of overall malnutrition led to normalization of the plasma-free choline concentration in 2 patients.   The Addition of Choline to Parenteral Nutrition

I got my vitamin D results back yesterday.  I've been taking 10,000 IU a day since Feb 2015.  Without supplementation since May, I dropped from 93 ng/ml to 54 range (30-100).  Thats with three hours a week of full exprosure, unprotected. mid summer S Florida.  Maximum benefits are around 80.  Even Israeli Liveguards in August seemed to hit a homeostasis at 70-90.  My son (diagnosed Celiac at weaning in 1976) is a Lifeguard in S Florida and was advised by his doctor to take vitamin D.  Presumably from the protective gear they are required to use, but also he is Celiac.

I still smoke over a pack a day.  All of the symptoms I had that I was told would go away if I quit, never would.  They did with GFD and vitamins.  Sleep apnea, mouth breathing, shortness of breath, etc.  Not that I am advocating smoking, every one I know is glad they quit and it is high on my list of to do, but not the Public Enemy it is portrayed as.

There is evidence that cigarettes are protective of Celiac.  A bipolar friend was told to vape nicotine by his doctor.  I know that all of my life I've used coffee and cigarettes as an appetite suppressant to give my gut time to heal long before I knew about Celiac, Seventh grade I started.  Friends went to the Soda Fountain, I stood out in the snow smoking.

If you want, list your symptoms and I will tell what I know.  I am not a professional, but have been researching since my wife died of Ovarian in 2005.  A non invasive test for Ovarian Cancer exists.  Get this done sooner, rather than later.  Might have to shop doctors.  My wife was a nurse, they still missed it.

The CA-125 blood test measures the amount of a protein called CA-125 in the blood. Many women with ovarian cancer have high levels of CA-125. This test can be useful as a tumor marker to help guide treatment in women known to have ovarian cancer, because a high level often goes down if treatment is working. But checking CA-125 levels has not been found to be as useful as a screening test for ovarian cancer. The problem with using this test for ovarian cancer screening is that high levels of CA-125 is more often caused by common conditions such as endometriosis and pelvic inflammatory disease.    Can Ovarian Cancer Be Found Early?

Welcome to the forum @Known1, What reaction were you expecting? Pipingrock.com High Potency Vitamin D3, 2000 IU, 250 Quick Release Softgels $6.89 I've have been taking the 10,000 IU for close to 10 years. When I started with vitamin D I worked my way up to 10000 over several weeks.  Even at 8000 I felt no noticeable difference.  Then after a few days at 10000 it hit Whoa, sunshine in a bottle.  celiac disease causes malabsorption of dietary D and you've poor UV access.  It took me from 2015 to 2019 to get my 25(OH)D just to 47 ng/ml.  Another two years to get to 80.  70 to 100 ng/ml is seems to be the body's natural upper homeostasis.  You're Calcium will increase with the vitamin D so don't supplement calcium unless you really need it.  Monitor with PTH  and 25(OH)D tests. Because of your Marsh 3 damage you need to ingest way more than the RDA of any supplement to undo your specific deficiencies. I believe you are in the goiter belt.  Unless you have reason not to, I recommend pipingrock's Liquid Iodine for price and quality.  The RDA is 150 to 1100 mcg.  In Japan the safe upper level is set at 3000 mcg.  Start with one drop 50 mcg to test for adverse response and build up.  I found 600 mcg (12 drops) a day is helping repair my body.  Iodine is necessary to healing.  90% of daily iodine intake is excreted in urine.  A Urine Iodine Concentration (UIC) can tell how much Iodine you got that day.  The thyroid TSH test will not show iodine deficiency unless it is really bad.

I don't know if I am getting sufficient Omega Threes. I read about  phosphotidyl choline may cause heart issues. I will have o do further research on heathy Omega 3 supplements or from foods. Is there a blood test that can tell you everything level in your system such as Thiamine, Benfotiamine levels etc? Thanks

If lectins were my problem, I would react to wheat germ (the highest source of wheat lectins) and beans. I don't. I only react to bread and pasta, which are the highest sources of gluten. Therefore, my issue is wheat-specific (Gluten/ATIs), not a general lectin issue.   I have eaten a supposedly high lectin diet (I say supposedly because lectin content in these foods is greatly reduced by proper cooking and I eat very few of those foods raw, and even then, rarely!!) for years. My health has improved greatly on my whole foods plant forward diet. I have asked all my drs and a registered dietician about my diet, asked if eating such a high amnt of fiber might interfere with the digestion of any other nutrients and the answer has always been NO.     while doing the gluten challenge I did not eat ANY wheat germ (since it doesn't have hardly any gluten, and I was too sick from the bread and pasta to want to eat much anyway) I will NOT put that poison in my body again. That was a horrific experience and if this is what most celiac patients have to deal with, I am very sorry for them I don't care if I have celiac or NCGS I won't intentionally cause myself that much pain and suffering it's not worth it.
    • knitty kitty
@catnapt,  Wheat germ contains high amounts of lectins which are really hard to digest and can be irritating to the digestive tract.  They can stimulate IgG antibody production as your blood test shows.   Even beans have lectins.  You've simply eaten too many lectins and irritated your digestive tract.   You may want to allow your digestive tract to rest for a week, then start on gluten in "normal" food, not in concentrated vital wheat gluten. This explains it well: Lectins, agglutinins, and their roles in autoimmune reactivities https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25599185/

I take Now B-1 (100 mg) Thiamine Hydrochloride, and Amazing Formulas L-Tryptophan (1000 mg).   Both are gluten free and free of other allergens.  I've taken them for a long time and haven't had a problem with them. I take Vitamin A from BioTech called "A-25".  It's gluten and allergen free and made in the USA.  It's a powder form of Vitamin A.  I was having trouble digesting fats at one point, but found I tolerated the powder form much better and have stuck with it since.   Tryptophan and Vitamin A help heal the intestines as well as improves skin health.  I get Dermatitis Herpetiformis and eczema flairs when my stomach is upset.  So I'm healing the outside as well as the inside.   I take one 1000 mg Tryptophan before bedtime.   With the Thiamine HCl, take 100 mg to start.  If you don't notice anything, three hours later take another. You can keep increasing your dose in this manner until you do notice improvement.  Remember not to take it in the evening so it won't keep you too energized to sleep. When I first started Thiamine HCl, taking 500 mg to 1000 mg to start was recommended.  If you've been thiamine insufficient for a while, you do notice a big difference.  It's like the start of a NASCAR race: Zoom, Zoom, turn it up!   This scared or made some people uncomfortable, but it's just your body beginning to function properly, like putting new spark plugs in your engine.  I took 1000 mg all at once without food.  It kicked in beautifully, but I got a tummy ache, so take with food.  I added in Thiamine TTFD and Benfotiamine weeks later and felt like I was Formula One racing.  So cool.  You may feel worse for a couple days as your body adjusts to having sufficient thiamine.  Feels sort of like you haven't cranked your engine for a while and it backfires and sputters, but it will settle down and start purring soon enough.  Adjust your dose to what feels right for you, increasing your dose as long as you feel improvement.  You can reach a plateau, so stay there for several days, then try bumping it up again.  If no more improvements happen, you can stay at the plateau amount and experiment with increasing your Thiamine TTFD.  It's like being your own lab rat.  LoL Yes, take one Benfotiamine at breakfast and one at lunch.  Take the B Complex at breakfast. Take the TTFD at breakfast and lunch as well.  I like to take the vitamins at the beginning of meals and the NeuroMag at the end of meals.   You may want to add in some zinc.  I take Thorne Zinc 30 mg at breakfast at the beginning of the meal.   Are you getting sufficient Omega Threes?  Our brains are made up mostly of fat.  Flaxseed oil supplements, sunflower seed oil supplements (or eat the seeds themselves) can improve that.  Cooking with extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil is also helpful.   @Wheatwacked likes phosphotidyl choline supplements for his Omega Threes.  He's also had dramatic health improvement by supplementing thiamine.  You're doing great!  Thank you for sharing your journey with us.  This path will smooth out.  Keep going!
