I don't know why, but my son is crying with stomach pain. The only thing I can figure is some little cousins visited this morning and they may have given him something to eat. He's screaming. What do you do with your kids? What can I give him to help?

Tylenol and a hot bath are what I normally do to help ease the pain. Also, laying on his back propped up some may help, I find I hurt the least in that position.

I hope he feels better soon :(

You can also try having him "assume tuttle position". Start on hands and knees, leave bottom in the air, hug himself with his arms and drop shoulders to the ground, with head to the side. I don't know how else to explain it, but it gets gas up and out.

I finally got him settled down. He had been crying a LONG time before I posted. I did what you said Lonewolf and gently massaged his back and sang to him. He was whimpering so pitifully even in his sleep. I also gave him a Prevacid. It was prescribed before the gluten-free diet and he hasn't been needing it. The tylenol was next, though. Thanks both of you. Hopefully he will sleep it off. I just don't know what could be causing it. He hasn't eaten anything unsual today except Kraft marshmallows and they are gluten-free. Maybe it was cc?????? The only other thing is if the cousins here earlier gave him something without me knowing it while they were playing outside. It was innocent if they did, but I hate he's hurting so bad..... :(

Y'all are awesome!

Sorry he's so sick. I'll say a prayer that it passes quickly.

Poor little guy - I hope he's feeling better soon.

Thanks guys. He seems to be feeling better tonight. He's not eating much, but he's not crying. Thanks for the prayers!

I'm hurting like I was glutened too. I think mine was CC from communion tonight. Our pastor was great about keeping the rice crackers separate for us, but he forgot to have a seperate cup for us. I knew better, but I dipped (just barely) anyway. We're doing confirmation and I'm a mentor for a young girl that I was teaching about communion tonight. I wanted to do it with her. You'd think I'd learn by now!!!! <_< I'll let him know it was an issue for us and he'll fix it, though.

any of you have problems with the flavored Kraft marshmallows? it's the only new thing he had tonight. I just don't know what caused it for him since he slept through church!

I always keep a pack of Pepto Bismol chewables on hand and if my daughter has an accidental glutening then I give her 1/3 of a tablet to chew on... after a while if she's not better I'll give her another 1/3 of a tablet... also if it's really bad, Tylenol, and I make sure that she's sipping on water.

I'm sorry to hear your little guy wasn't feeling good... It can be like trying to solve a mystery to figure out where they got cc'd sometimes, and sometimes we may never know. It always makes me feel bad if I've been really vigilant about making sure things are safe for her and she still get's sick.

I only just saw your post now--sorry I didn't see it before. Oh, I'm so sorry your little guy had such an awful time! I hope it never happens again. Would a hot water bottle on his tummy help?

TCA Contributor

Thanks for the advice guys. I really don't know what I would do if I didn't have all of you to turn to for help. :) My little guy was tuckered out last night and went to bed really early, but seems much better.

By any chance, did he just have any vaccines in the last 48 hours? That's how my oldest reacted--and there was a delay of a few hours before he started with hours of screams like I've never heard before or since (and I hope never to hear them again).

No, we were home all day. That's why I can't figure it out because the house is gluten-free. I haven't given him anymore of the marshmallows. I may let him have some more in a few days and see if he gets sick. It's so hard because sometimes kids just have a tummy ache, but I always try to tie it back to gluten. He seems fine today, though. For that I am grateful! thanks for the idea, though.

Nini, I think Pepto has aspirin in it and isn't safe for young kids.... I might be wrong, but I remember it that way. Just to let you know.

What worked great for us (2 1/2 year old) when he got glutened recently was some of the infant mylicon drops. His bloated tummy dropped right back down and he wanted something to eat within 30 minutes.

I'm so sorry to hear you're feeling so unwell, and I hope you recover quickly. While your personal experience of getting sick is absolutely valid, there are a few key inaccuracies in the information you've shared that are important to clarify for anyone else reading. The central misunderstanding is about oats and gliadin. Oats do not contain gliadin; gliadin is a specific protein found exclusively in wheat. The protein in oats is called avenin, which is similar in structure but is a completely different compound. For the vast majority of people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, pure, uncontaminated oats are safe. The reason "gluten-free" oats are necessary is because regular oats are frequently cross-contaminated with wheat, barley, or rye during growing and processing. Certified gluten-free oats are tested to ensure they are free from this cross-contamination. It's possible you may have a separate and less common sensitivity to avenin in oats themselves, or the illness could have been caused by another ingredient or even an unrelated virus. Given your expertise and severe reaction, it would be a good idea to discuss this with a doctor to pinpoint the exact cause. This article, and the comments below it, may be helpful:

Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition with a genetic base. The the potential for developing the disease is inherited. but remains latent until triggered by some stress event. Thus, there is an epigenetic component to celiac disease. Once the genes are awakened from dormancy, celiac reactions are triggered by the ingestion of gluten.

I just called in sick to work and I'm laying here in a fetal position with liquid diarrhea so bad I'm using a trash can and can't make it to the bathroom. Last night I thought I would treat myself as most of you realize we have to cook from scratch so much but I thought I would treat myself and I made a huge mistake by buying these katz cinnamon donuts. I had a pre-covid gluten-free restaurant and used to hold gluten-free meetings in McDonald's until they closed the dining rooms down. I am very familiar with this topic. I'm too sick to fish the box out of the garbage can and read the ingredients again but I can guarantee you before I bought it I made sure they didn't have so-called gluten-free oats because there is no such thing. Oats have gliadin and gliadin is a derivative of gluten I learned this long ago in my gluten-free journey. I am in so much pain and so sick I can't believe it. Right now I'm feeling like this company has no business making food for the public.

Hi all, just ticked over into my first year gluten-free after being diagnosed last October and feeling a bit rough after a possible glutening. Diagnosed at the ripe age of 38, never been ill in my life before this so safe to say my health anxiety is now borderline unmanageable. I think I may have been glutened a week ago, since then I’ve had that familiar hot/burning feeling in my gut, gas, bloating and all the Bristol Stool chart types in one sitting. I know people are different but does this sound familiar to anyone? Stomach was churning like mad last weekend like it did when I first ill before diagnosis. Acid reflux(which was my first symptom way back when) also reared its ugly head, which I probably the worst symptoms imo. Anxiety is probably up more so as I’m leaving on holiday to USA in 3 weeks time, which would be pretty much ruined if my guts are still messed by the time we leave.  Any words of wisdom appreciated    Bryan
