Question About Healing...

Hi - I'm officially about 9 months out from my diagnosis last year. All the nasty D is gone, and I've had the TTG again that says I'm complying with the diet great. My question is: I've noticed that since I've been "getting better" foods seem to bother me that never did before...like milk, garlic and onions, if I drink a lot of caffeine...etc. Sometimes I'll notice some extra mucus in my stools (gross, I know) that I might not have had the day before...etc...

I keep wondering if now that my small intestine is growing a new lining, maybe it's like skin over a new wound that's sensitive for a while.

Does anyone here have any opinion on this?

I swear I remember a thread on this somewhere...

Any comments would be appreciated...A

Hi Amanda, and welcome to this board. Well, as your villi are healing, you're starting to absorb nutrients again. Not just the ones your body wants, but also the ones you're intolerant to. So, new intolerances (or at least you weren't aware of them before) are showing up.

Most people with celiac disease are intolerant to dairy at first, but many can tolerate it again after being gluten-free for about a year.

My suggestion is to eliminate the offending foods for now, and to try to reintroduce them in a few months, one at a time (one or two weeks apart, to make sure you don't miss delayed reactions), to see if you still react to them, or if you are able to tolerate them again.

Thanks Ursula...I sort of thought that in the back of my head - oh my gosh do onions bug the CRAP out of my stomach...ERG.

Sometimes this celiac thing seriously frustrates me :D

What really helped my daughter was to start the specific carbohydrate diet after she had been gluten free. She started reacting to almost everything and continued with GI problems, autoimmune and behavior problems too. So, we did the SCDiet and everything bad just stopped within 2 weeks ! We were lucky. She had already come a long way with her Gluten and Dairy free diet that she had been on, so her gut must not have been terriblly damaged. Others don't notice changes with SCDiet that quickly.

In addition we used metagenics probiotics and enzymes for any suspect meals of any remotely suspect foods.

The combination was a huge success!

SCDiet can sound overwhleming, the the thing about it is that it is allowing your intestines to heal and it is TEMPORARY! You don't have to do it for life :)

Many people do well with enzymes too! We use Theramedix brand (get it from our local DAN doctor).

It's not in your head! It seemed that Bean's gut was so damaged by gluten that her body began attacking any and everything. All her common foods became allergey triggors, and her own body was fighting itself with full body petciea rashes. Her system was confused and the good blood cells were being killed in the process, which caused that particular rashing. While her chronic diarrhea had cleared up, she still had 2 bad days a week and she wasn't potty trained yet (and she was 4). But after such a short time of SCDiet, that all went away and she was able to eat SO MANY foods that had previouslly been bothering her.

And on another note, we do tend to eat a pretty healthy and strict diet. We eat pasture raised meats, cage free raised eggs, nuts, fruits, veggies, and some rice products and alternative grain products (like pecan waffles and once a month loaf of bread). BUT we don't rely on gluten replacements. We focus more on meat, veggies, nuts, eggs, fruits. The bread/rice/alt grains are our treats.

The SCDiet has a recipe for Monster Cookies, which I really enjoy. Feel free to pm me or email me if you want more specific ideas on this or links :)

Warmly,

Laura

Laura,

Was your daughter doing the SCD for 2 weeks total, or were you saying it took 2 weeks to see results? I was just wondering because I did the SCD for 6 weeks and after going back to gluten free foods I felt great for a few weeks, but now I'm starting to have some problems again. I know I probably didn't stay on it long enough, but I do feel that it helped the healing along. Children do heal faster than adults, in any case.

Christine

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
