had another constapation attack, only been 4 days but its severe this time, my tummy is so swollen that i cant fit in to my trousers and i look like im 7 months pregnant, and my belly is rock solid hard, the pain in my tummy is worse its actually throbbing and feels like labour pains!! i feel sick and got gas and my head is banging and im a bit emmotional too. ive tried my fruit smoothies and apple juice and nothing, the last straw came today at dinner when i couldnt eat ( i was hungry) my tummy just wouldnt allow any more food in, it was full. i know im gonna pay for this later and it was a bad thing i did but i didnt have anything to lose at thatpoint so i took 20 laxatives, ive had to take 16 before in the past before it worked so im hopeing its gonna work. im desperate!!! i know we al get D ( and i do too) but why do we get constapation ? or is this one just me?

If you took 20 laxitives and have not had a bowel movement you need to get to the hospital. Are you running a fever at all? You say you have gas but is your tummy rumbling? If it is not making noise again get thee to the ER. The rock hard tummy worrys me, do you have diverticulosis? If so go to the ER. Seem a little repititious sorry but I'm a bit concerned. Thats a lot of laxitive to take. I hope everything is okay.

I agree with ravenwoodglass-this sounds like an emergency. If you can't get to a hospital, at least try an emema or suppositories. At this point you are blocked and everything you put in your mouth is going to just sit there and "brew". Try to get to a hospital, though. Keep us posted and take care.

Impactions are a VERY serious medical condition. I used to work in a retirement community and one lady almost died before they realized what it was. It is still possible to have somewhat of a BM with an impaction, but alternating from D to C is one symptom. You really need to see a dr.!!!!!!

Taz,

How much water are you drinkning? Strictly increasing your fiber intake will not do it. You need to drink water.

Apple juice is about the WORST thing to drink when you are backed up. You should avoid everything in the BRAT diet (bananas, rasins, apples, toast.) THose things combat D, not constipation.

If it has been as long as you say, you should go to the hospital!!

With that many laxitives to combat the problem everytime, there is also a risk that your system can become dependant on them...again, a trip to the local ER, or your doc for some guidance perhaps.

IT is sounds to me like this is getting very serious. More caffiene will only make theproblem worse at this point because it will dehydrated you further and compound your problem.

Many prayers and good luck!

Before you take that many laxatives, why not do an enema? That is almost guaranteed to break the blockage!

Please get help!

Taz: I hope you're okay. Once you get this under control, you may want to try fresh pineapple or pineapple juice to help keep you a bit more regular. I know not all things workl for all people but this really helps me after an episode of D and i don't 'go' for several days--let us know how you made out. :)

got home today, went to the hospital who addmitted me immediatly, had an x-ray which found i had some kind of mass in my bowel which they said was an obstruction in my bowel, then had pethadine ( lovely) for the pain, seen by the consultant who said " you dont get constapation with celiac and you certainly dont get pain, no no it has to be something else" at this point i wasnt just upset i was confused, to be told that i doubted if i had celiac at all, anyway he wanted me to havea scan to see what was happening, i agreed, so i waited and i waited and i waited, in the end they had to send me home to wait for an appoitment as there was no space for mein radiology, i was tamping mad, i came home and decided straight away that i was going privealy to see someone, as i left the hospital i spokt to a registra who looked at my notes and said i had sespected pelvis inflamatory desease, i was hopping mad as i know that is an std and i have been happliy married for more than 10 years and have had numerous swabs done cos of a prvious thrush problem , all come back negetive by the way for any infection as have my husband! can someone please explain to me what the **** just happend!!!! ( sorry )

sorry i should also mention that they did give me something for the constapation, and i did eventually go, although it was D.

So did they fix the obstruction, or did they just do nothing?? Don't you just want to shake a doctor sometimes? I'm sorry. If you go back, go armed with Celiac literature. These doctors need a lesson.

An obstruction sounds like an impaction. We once had a foster son with horrible uncontrollable D. Turned out he had an obstruction the size of a grapefruit and some D was leaking around it. He had no control because the impaction had taken the urge away. You really need to be see soon!!!!!!!

Don't freak out over the PID question. This can come from many things and is not solely a sexually transmitted condition. Try to ignore their ignorance of celiac, as we all know it can cause severe C, I suffered with C for many many years and have had more than one impaction before my system switched over to constant D. I am glad they were able to give you something to get you 'going'. I hope you are feeling better today.

so what else could cause this PID condition. when i heard that i did freak. i do feel better today and my tummy has gone down although im wacked and my boys said i lokked tired, i plan to have a lie in tommorow.

Before I got diagnosed I would switch between V, D AND C. Usually V and D came together at the SAME time. Then C would come. I seriously didn't go for 6 days once. 6 DAYS! They gave me laxatives that worked, but made be feel real sick, bloated and my belly was sticking out like I was pregnant, it hurt sooo bad, I swear laxatives do more damage than good, so I stopped taking them. I have been fairly regular now with no big surprises. Please let us know what the doctors tell you to do next.

I had repeat bouts of this for a while along with urinary tract infections, for me it was linked to my constant D and accidents. Anytime bacteria gets into that area of the body it can cause PID, it doesn't have to be linked to sexual activity. There is a link between undiagnosed gonnorhea and PID and that got a lot of press, and rightly so but it isn't the only cause.

Dear Taz,

It sounds like you have "intestinal obstruction" which could be due to a number of reasons. In your case judging by the diagnosis of PID, it is most likely due to an intestinal "adhesion". "Adhesion" means a loop of your intestine is adhering to the internal wall of your abdomen. Then the normal intestine enters the adhering loop and gets "strangulated" producing the obstruction. This may be hard to visualize but think of it like a noose around a rope (with the adhering loop being the noose and the normal intestine being the rope) This kind of intestinal adhesion occurs after the healing of PID. In your case PID is definitely not caused by Gonorrhea but probably Streptococcus or Staph. Did you have any gynecological surgeries in the past? I am asking because this is usually the way these organisms enter the pelvis and cause PID.Once they cause PID they can enter the peritoneal cavity (where the intestines are located) and cause peritonitis (which is just infection of the intestinal cavity), peritonitis causes bleeding and formation of a clot or scar between the intestines and the wall of the abdomen. So then that causes adhesion. Anyway, I hope this helps to clear up your concerns.

I just recently saw something on this.  Has anyone tried test strips?  Which brand is better?  Not sure how they really work and if they really do work.  Thank you, Nancy (aka Borky)

Hello @Midwesteaglesfan and welcome. A result greater than 10 U/mL is considered positive. Some labs use 15 as the cutoff, but 34 is in the positive.  The endoscopy and biopsy is looking for damage to your small intestine.  I don't don't think 5 days is enough to repair the damage. This comment is effectly your answer, regardless of your biopsy results.  The endoscopy has been the Gold Standard diagnostic, and most healthcare providers won't diagnose celiac disease until your intestinal lining Marsh Score reaches stage 3. You don't really want to wait for the damage to get worse, especially since only five days mostly gluten free gave you relief.  Yes, migranes is one of the 200 symptoms that may be caused by Celiac Disease. Malabsorption Syndrome is often comorbid with celiac disease.  The western diet is deficient in many vitamins and minerals.  That's why gluten processed foods are fortified.  Gluten free processed foods are not; Vitamin D deficiency is a virtual given.  40 to 60% of the industrial population is deficient in vitamin D, Damage to the intestinal lining from celiac disease can decrease the number of vitamin D receptors.  So now you get no vitamin D from the sun (skin cancer scare) the major source of vitamin D, plus absorbtion from food is poor because of intestinal damage.   Low iodine intake is getting more of a concern because the major source of iodine used to be bread (dough conditioner with iodine was stopped in the US in the 1970s), dairy (lactose intolerance from eating quick pickles with vinegar instead of fermented pickles which supply lactase excreting lactobacillus to improve Lactose intolerance. Commercial Dairies have wheat, barley and rye added to the cow feed. Some say they are sensitive to milk protein, but it is the gluten added to supplement the cow feed to increase milk production that becomes part of the milk protein causing the problem.  And people use less iodized salt.  In the US intake of iodine dropped 50% from 1970 to 1984. Switch to Grass fed only milk and consider supplementing Liquid Iodine drops to your diet.  The omega 6 to omega 3 ratio of commercial milk is 5:1; Organic milk is 3:1 and grass fed milk is 1:1. The typical western diet is around 14:1, optimum for humans is 1:1.  Wheat flour is 22:1 omega 6:3.  Choose vegetables lower in omega 6, it is inflammatory. Eat fermented foods and switch to Grass fed only milk.  Some say they are sensitive to milk protein, but it is the gluten added to supplement the cow feed to increase milk production that becomes part of the milk protein.

At 41 years old I have been fighting fatigue and joint pain for a couple months.  My family doctor kept saying nothing was wrong but I was insistent that I just didn’t feel right.  Finally after running several blood labs, one came back showing inflammation in my body and I was referred to a rheumatologist.  He was extremely thorough and sat with me and my family for a good hour asking questions and listening. He ordered X-rays of all my joints and more bloodwork.  He suspected some sort of reactive inflammatory arthritis.  My TTG (Tissue Transglutaminase) came back at 34. he told me to try going gluten free and out me on Salfasalzin to help the join inflammation.  Over the next couple days going gluten free and doing a lot of research and talking to people with celiacs,  we found that I should have an upper endoscopy for insurance purposes in the future.  I reached back out to my rheumatologist and expressed this concern and he got back to me stating I was correct and resume regular gluten diet and stop the medication until after that scope.     They were able to schedule me in for 2 days later.  I had been gluten free, or as close to it as I could be for about 5 days.  I know I ate some brats with it but wanted to use them up.  My symptoms had gotten slightly better in those 5 days.  I felt less fatigue and joint pain was slightly better(it had gotten really bad) so for these last 2 days I’ve gone crazy with wheat bread, pasta and such.  I’m hoping those 5 days didn’t screw this endoscopy up.  I can’t imagine after a life of gluten, my intestines healed in 5 days and after eating gluten again for these couple days,  my stomach hurts, joint pain is coming back up so I know the inflammation is there.   Hinesight after this diagnosis, I have had chronic migraines since my late teens.  Has that been a lingering symptom of celiacs all these years?  I’ve never really had the stomach issues, for me it came in heavy these last couple months as the fatigue, just always feeling tired and exhausted.  And the joint pain.     So getting in the car for the 2 hour drive to the hospital for this scope now.     Wish me luck!
