Does My 10 Yr Old Daughter Have This?

I really dont know if my daughter has this. I have been battling dd health problems for 5 yrs. Drs are really no help. I know something is not right. Her MAIN problem is her bloating stomach, when she wakes up it is not that bad, but when she eats she looks pregnant. Her face even swells.

Here are some facts about her.

short stature

overweight (mostly in belly)

Use to have stomach cramps alot (right side), but better now

dry skin, prickly rash appears sometimes after shower

gains weight very easily( unexplained) She is very active

constipation ( I have found that milk causes this for her)

complains of joint pain. She recently had 2 separate ankle sprains in less than 2 yrs apart. 2nd.

one had to be cased

Sounds strange but 2 medicines she was on different times and had strange side effects were Lactulose Caused ALOT of weight gain. And Steroid (for asthma) caused her facial swelling and bloating to go away.

She is very allergic to dust mites, she had a skin prick test done for allergys. Had a food one done and she had a higher reaction to soy. But not enough to say ALLERGIC, but I do believe in Food Intolerances. But he didnt. SO???

Does not have memory problems at all, she helps me all the time with my memory problems. LOL

She was always underweight and short (still is) Dr. says she grows slow, she has been checked for being short and not growing like normal but no concern for him because he checks her height every few months.

RIght now i am going with York Labs for food intolerance test IGG ELISA

But if anyone can suggest what to do i would greatly appreciate it. She may not even have this but something is not right.

She could have Celiac or gluten intolerance. The symptoms vary so much from person to person. Get the blood tests see how they turn out. If you want to try an elimination diet after testing is done, a gluten free diet is not harmful.

Ask your doc to run the celiac panel of bloodwork and see what her numbers are.

If your doctor is unwilling to run lab tests or they come back negative or inconclusive you could have enterolab run tests. They do gluten, ttg, malabsorption, gene, dairy, soy, egg and yeast. They are expensive, but I feel, worth it. www.enterolab.com if you want to check them out. Sounds very much like it could be gluten, soy and/or dairy.

Don't wait to get her tested. The bloating and facial swelling used to happen to me also.

Hi, I posted before about my son's legs shaking after gluten. I did end up starting him on vit b and happily he actually started sleeping better and longer.  Back to my 4 year old. She had gone back to meltdowns, early wakes, and exhaustion. We tested everything again and her ferritin was lowish again (16) and vit d was low. After a couple weeks on supplements she is cheerful, sleeping better and looks better. The red rimmed eyes and dark circles are much better.   AND her Ttg was a 3!!!!!! So, we are crushing the gluten-free diet which is great. But WHY are her iron and vit d low if she's not getting any gluten????  She's on 30mg of iron per day and also a multivitamin and vit d supplement (per her dr). That helped her feel better quickly. But will she need supplements her whole life?? Or is there some other reason she's not absorbing iron? We eat very healthy with minimal processed food. Beef maybe 1x per week but plenty of other protein including eggs daily.  She also says her tummy hurts every single morning. That was before the iron (do not likely a side effect). Is that common with celiac?

Celiac disease is the most likely cause, but here are articles about the other possible causes:

Hi @Atl222 As @trents points out, there could be many reasons for this biopsy result.  I am interested to know, is your gastroenterologist concerned?  Also, are your blood tests showing steady improvement over the years? I remember when I had my last biopsy, several years after diagnosis, mine came back with with raised lymphocytes but no villous damage, too! In my own case, my consultant wasn't remotely concerned - in fact, he said I might still get this result even if all I ever did was eat nothing but rice and water.   My coeliac blood tests were still steadily improving, albeit slowly, which was reassuring.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @Atl222! Yes, your increased lymphocytes could be in response to oats or it could possibly be cross contamination from gluten that is getting into your diet from some unexpected source but not enough to damage the villi. And I'm certain that increased lymphocytes can be caused by other things besides celiac disease or gluten/oats exposure. See attachment. But you might try eliminating oats to start with and possibly dairy for a few months and then seek another endoscopy/biopsy to see if there was a reduction in lymphocyte counts.
