Update On My Hubby

Well, it's been 7 weeks since we've been gluten-free!

There's been quite a bit of improvement, but there's still a ways to go. His mood is better in some ways. He seems a lot more happy overall.

We got into it a bit over the 4th of July, but it was because of what I was planning for supper. He's getting sick of grilled chicken or pork chops. However, his diet is even more limited at the moment because he's on a low-iodine diet until Tuesday, when he has the last of his scans/tests. He's been recovering from thryoid cancer for 2 years. The low iodine diet includes a restriction of dairy, which has been difficult. I have promised him that Tuesday night I will fix him anything he wants (gluten-free, of course)!

Now, after proclaiming his improvement, I have to add that his GI issues have been bad for the past several days. I am attributing that to the stress of having these tests/scans. He's been going back and forth to MD Anderson everyday since Friday for bloodwork and injections. He had an ultrasound of his neck done Friday (clear!!), as well as an X-ray (also clear!!). Tomorrow he goes in for his iodine tracer dose, and has the scan on Tuesday. We also meet with his endocrinologist on Tuesday.

I can understand the stress...I've had it too. In the past, every scan has been followed by finding out that there is more cancer and he needs more surgery. If this next scan is clear, it will be the first good news in 2 years!

But overall, things are better. I'm hoping that if we get more good news on Tuesday, his gut will settle down, and with more time, he (well, both of us) will be well on the way to a happier life!!

HI Stacie

Just saw your post. Don't think we've written to each other before.

Sorry about what you and hubby are going through.

gluten-free is hard enough w/out the restrictions placed by the diet for test and dairy. I miss the dairy more than gluten-free.

2 years with this thyroid cancer is rough. hope you like your drs and are getting good treatment.

i'll send good vibs up for you till the test results come back 'clean' it's about time don't you think..?

good luck will keep ck'n on you and glad you posted

PS Just went back and saw your first post Stacie...you've been on since end of May I don't know where i"ve been except that's about when i got sick so guess i've been out of the loop. You sure have had a rough time of it.

I know stress plays a really really big part in my illness and it's hard to keep the stress down when there have been so many health issues...it's not a 'stressless' journey your on.

hugs

Judy

You might try Heallix.  It's a silver solution with fulvic acid. I just put the solution on with a cotton ball.  It seemed to stop the nerve pain. Again,  not in your eyes or ears.   Go to heallix.com to read more about it and decide for yourself Also,  I do think nerve and celiac combined have a lot to do with your susceptibility to shingles breaking out.

Celiac disease requires both genetic potential and a triggering stress event to activate the genes. Otherwise it remains dormant and only a potential problem. So having the genetic potential is not deterministic for celiac disease. Many more people have the genes than actually develop the disease. But if you don't have the genes, the symptoms are likely being caused by something else.

Yes, i pulled raw ancetry data and saw i have 2/3 markers for DQ2.2 but have heard from friends in genetics that this raw data can be wildly innacurate

Thanks, I’m still dealing with the pain and tingling and itching and feeling like bugs or something crawling around on my face and scalp. It’s been a miserable experience. I saw my eye doc last week, the eye itself was okay, so they didn’t do anything. I did take a 7 day course of an antiviral. I’m hoping for a turnaround soon! My life is full of stress but I have been on / off the gluten free diet for the last year , after being talked into going back on gluten to have a biopsy, that looked okay. But I do have positive antibody levels that have been responsive  to a gluten free diet. I can’t help but wonder if the last year has caused all this.

I don't think any apps are up to date, which is exactly why this happened to you. Most of the data in such apps is years old, and it doesn't get updated in real time. Ultimately there is no substitution for learning to read labels. The following two lists are very helpful for anyone who is gluten sensitive and needs to avoid gluten when shopping. It's very important to learn to read labels and understand sources of hidden gluten, and to know some general information about product labelling--for example in the USA if wheat is a possible allergen it must be declared on a product's ingredient label like this: Allergens: Wheat.
