Hi everyone....

I accidently found this group while searching the web, but I am very glad I did....Let me get to the point, I have had various problems with muscles, digestion, sinuses, etc for the most part of the last 20 years (Im 36 now) 4 years ago I was diagnosed with diabetes and 3 months ago I had my gall bladder out, didnt relieve many symptoms....anyway the reason I need help is that since March of this year I have had excessive sigh breathing that is quite uncomfortable, it seems to happen with some very deep breathing especially after eating. Has anyone else experienced excessive sighing???? Please tell me any stories you may have with this sighing crap....my doctors have given up, but I think it may be gluten allergies....HELP...

Welcome! Hmmmm....this is puzzling. All other signs could be many things, but are definitely indicative of Celiac. But the sighing.....could be allergy related.

Sorry I can't be of help, but there are so many knowledgeable people here, and I pray you get some relief soon.

I'm not sure I quite understand what you mean-- are you having trouble catching your breath? Is the sighing more like gasping? That would hint at asthma, & could certainly be triggered by a food allergy, or even just the interruption of regular breathing that comes with swallowing your food.

I hope we can be of help to you somehow-- it sounds distressing.

Do you feel like your throat is swelling or closing up when this happens?

wzcbj Newbie

Maybe my throat changes, well that sounds stupid....here is what happens, I eat, a short time later it almost feels like a panic attack. I start breathing real fast and hard then the sighs start. I sigh and sigh and sigh for anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour, then it stops...........then its almost like when it hits the intestines it starts all over again. NEVER happens on an empty stomach

queenofhearts Explorer

Have you talked with your doctor about this? It still sounds like it might be asthma to me (there's a lot of it in my family, & it manifests in some odd ways). You mention the panicky fast breathing, with asthma there is a sensation that you can't move the air in & out of your lungs properly. It can be very frightening, & lots of sufferers tend to pant during an attack. The way it works is that the bronchial tubes are constricted, which actually inhibits breathing OUT, this might lead to what you call sighing... it's a little hard to tell via e-mail. I would definitely ask your doctor about this-- there are inhalers that can give you immediate relief it it is asthma. And of course it would be good to figure out what is triggering it; an elimination diet might help that.

This is the post I found that made me believe maybe my sighing is due to GA::::

You could very well have a food allergy. A food allergy is a bit different than celiac disease/gluten intolerance, but many people on this board have food allergies as well. Maybe you could do something like a rotation diet? Have you already been tested for food allergies? That's not to say a negative test result would rule it out. You could start experimenting with your diet and maybe keeping a food diary would be helpful too. Some common allergens are soy, wheat, dairy, nuts, shellfish...there are many different possibilities....

I think you also need to keep a food journal. Does this occur after eating any food or one or more foods in particular? Do you have any heartburn associated with this? Is it hard for you to swollow certain foods? I have trouble swallowing hard boiled eggs, it is very scary, I usually spit them out so that i can swallow. My Mother also had this problem especially when she was upset about something. I had a food test and found that i am intolerant of wheat, yeast, corn, dairy, and egg whites.

If you suspect that gluten may be a problem, get tested for celiac disease! And while you're at it, get tested for other allergies/intolerances as well, to get to the bottom of this. Since you only experience this problem right after eating, it's obviously food related.

I agree with the food diary idea. Start writing down exactly what you eat at every meal, and how you felt afterwards. Start eating very simply, so it will be easier to identify the culprit.

I hope you can figure this out, it sounds scary.

Okay, you finally found someone who can relate!!! I used to hyperventilate frequently. I also could not catch my breath, it was like I could breath, but never take in a big enough breath. This is completely gone gluten-free. I went through all the testing for asthma and it was just one more case where the docs rolled their eyes, patted me on the back, and sent me home.

I would suggest getting tested because once you are gluten-free you can't. All my testing was inconclusive from being gluten-free, so I got tested by enterolab, which you can do on your own without your doc.

I have that problem, too. It's like I'm gulping for air and I can never get a breath quite deep enough. In college, I had a really poor score on the blow-out-raise-the-ball-thingy test. When I had allergy testing while gluten-free, it was totally normal. Now that I'm on a gluten challenge for a biopsy, the air-gulping came back. I think it's a hyper-active immune system thing.

I've been dx'ed with athsma, but it's only when I'm sick.

I too can relate! I noticed while keeping a food journal that whenever I had wheat bread I would get short of breath and had more trouble talking. My husband said I sounded anxious because I was so breathy talking. I was having to stop mid sentence to inhale so I could keep talking. I have been gluten free now for almost 2 months and it doesn't happen now (unless I get gluten by accident). I also have trouble swallowing hard boiled eggs like the post above. I haven't confirmed an egg allergy but will be looking into it. Hope this helps!

I found it helpful to be sure to breathe out all the way. I believe it's not a problem with breathing in, it's a problem that your lungs can't breathe in because you haven't breathed out. I believe that's somehow connected to the concept of breathing into a paper bag, which helps but makes you look like a freak out in public  . That may help until it goes away.

I also found breathing in for a count of four, holding my breath for a count of four, then breathing out for a count of four, would help. Somehow concentrating on breathing out or holding my breath would make me stop gasping for air.

I've also had the experience of sighing, although until you mentioned it I never even thought of it in connection to gluten. It wasn't as intense as you describe but I also had shortness of breath and the feeling I wasn't getting all the air in or out.

What an amazing site.

Has there been a thread of just symptoms? I was thinking about it the other day in regards to problems wearing earrings and what a strange symptom that is and how I would never have connected that to Celiac either.

When my wife attempted to open the online card in the store with a cashier, it would not work. We then showed the owner the link to the card, the online receipt that I got upon purchase, and even my bank statement confirming the purchase. That did not satisfy her, since she said she needed the link to open to reveal the gift ID num. They even admitted they had a systems problem around that time.

Was the card itself lost or just the record or both?

We were flabergasted that the owner would not acknowledge a $50 e-gift card I purchased for my celiac wife. My wife tried to open it in the store and was informed there had been a system change and they could not find the record. No worries, she was told, just talk to management. Six months later, and numerous absurd back and forths, and the owner literally informs me there have been "bad actors", so she can't make good on this lost gift card. In other words, she accused me of lying and committing fraud... over $50! Please be careful with your orders and purchases here.

Yes, some people do get withdrawal from gluten but gluten withdrawal doesn't usually cause gut pain. Maybe more like general body aches and discomfort. We have articles on gluten withdrawal on this forum. You might do a search for them. Applesauce is very acidic and some brands have added vitamin C (ascorbic acid) which makes them more acidic. This can damage the stomach lining if you eat it too often. Especially if your stomach lining is already compromised. Ibuprofen inhibits the body's ability to rebuild the stomach's protective mucosal lining. That's why it can cause peptic ulcers. As strange as it may sound, low level irritation/inflammation stimulates the body to rebuild the stomach lining. There are two steps in this rebuilding process known as COX 1 and COX 2. Ibuprofen represses both COX 1 and COX 2. Celecoxcib, a prescription anti inflammatory, inhibits only COX 2, making it less likely to cause damage to the gut lining.

Do you or anyone know alot about ibuprofen  I wasn't sure if I was eating too much apple sauce.   Something is making my pain so much worse  I'm referring to the intense pins and needles in my feet and lower legs.  Jaw actually has tardive dystonia and muscle spasms throughout my back Almost like an opposite effect that a pain reliever would do. I'm fairly new to this. Whatever is going on seems to be worsening  Do people get a withdrawal effect from gluten?  It's extremely painful 😖  I'll post that question or research on the site  Thank you everyone for responding
