The Smell Of Foods Affect Me

Hi everyone,

Has anyone had a problem with the smell of some foods. I did not know where to p0st this, so I hope this is the right category.

Pre=-diagnosis and post diagnosis of celiac disease, I have been unable to tolerate the smell of bacon, eggs cooking, greasy foods like fried foods, anything fast food, red meat and pork, chocolate. I used to love these foods and eat them pre surgery, but not since. This is not in my head, I have actually thrown up with the smell of bacon that my husband was cooking for himself and our son, I had to leave the room and go to my bedroom and close the door.

My diet consists of fish, chicken and turkey, veggies and fruit and of course gluten-free foods like rice noodles and rice and bland foods like vanilla gluten-free ice cream.. Even the chicken and turkey sometimes makes me sick, smelling or eating it.

Is this normal, does anyone else have this problem? This all started after I had my gallbladder taken out, it was infected with 8 stones in 2001 and was dxd with chronic pancreatitis after surgery, since then, I have not been able to stand the smell or taste of these foods. I was not dxd with celiac disease until 04'. Any thoughts on this. Is it from cp or celiac disease, going gluten free? Thanks for reading, Mick66

I know exactly what you are talking about. The smell of raw hamburger or ramen noodles cooking will set my tummy whirling. I have also had my gall bladder removed and it is worse since then.

Eggs do the same thing for me. Don't real know what started my aversion to eggs as I ate them fine as a young child. Makes me feel sick when someone just describes the smell or cooking process :o

The smell of any Chinese/Japanese/Laos ect. food (save for Chicken and Beef w/ rice) makes me absolute sick.

The smell of mayonnaise makes me retch.

The smell of bread baking when I open the oven door will trigger a reaction for me.

The smell of bread in the supermarket gets me. Along with food being fried. Just seems to be greasy things.

Yuck.

maybe it's your body's way of telling you to avoid these foods, at least for the time being. i think when one is in a very sensitive state (physically and/or emotionally), strong, rich foods like that don't sit well (esp. for healing). and of course some of it isn't very healthy (fried and fast foods). at least that's my opinion.

If my body is trying to tell me to avoid these foods, why did it not give me that message before I went gluten free?

well i think that's what symptoms are doing, but that's a different issue. responding to what mick said, it sounds like a hypersensitivity to strong foods. like if you've ever been hungover and the smell (and sight) of certain food makes you want to be sick. usually its the richer foods (like the things mick mentioned) that are the worst, and they are also harder to digest. i interpret that as a bodily reaction indicating those foods would upset your body too much (and not just an emotional response because you don't like the taste of it). i know that after surgery or during sickness or prolonged stress people can become hypersensitive to things like certain foods, lights, sounds, etc. i know i do.

My body did talk to me and it told me to eat eat, as it was always starving.

But now, it isn't starving, and I am learning to pick and choose what I eat. I love that part of the diet. It satisfies me 9 days out of ten.

well it's interesting b/c about 6 years ago, i actually started feeling i should avoid or even cut out wheat entirely, and i didn't know what celiac disease or gluten was then. i have no official diagnosis yet (no insurance) but plenty of symptoms, so i am giving the diet a try. i'll see if my body/intuition was giving me a message, or just messing with me.

The smell of soy burgers do it to me. I think this is maybe just our sense of smell though and not really anything from celiacs or gluten intolerance. My mother can't stand the smell of bananas. Her grandpa bought a whole truck load of them when she was a child and they ate and ate bananas and to this day, she hates them--won't touch them and she is 70 now. Deb

Have you tried Pure Encapsulations supplements? This is a brand my doctor recommends for me. I have no issues with this brand.

plant sources of calcium, such as spinach, have calcium bound to oxalates, which is not good. best source of calcium is unfortunately dairy, do you tolerate dairy? fermented dairy like kefir is good and or a little hard cheese. i do eat dairy, i can only take so much dietary restriction and gluten is hard enough! but i guess some people do have bad reactions to it, so different for everyone.

i take b12, folate, b2, b6, glycine, Nac, zinc, vk2 mk4, magnesium, coq10, pqq, tmg, creatine, omega 3, molybdnem (sp) and just started vit d. quite a list i know.  I have high homocysteine (last checked it was 19, but is always high and i finally decided to do something about it) and very low vitamin d, 10. have been opposed to this supp in the past, but going to try it at 5k units a day. having a pth test on friday, which is suspect will be high. my homocysteine has come down to around 9 with 3 weeks of these supplements and expect it to go down further. i also started on estrogen/progesterone. I have osteoporosis too, so that is why the hormones.  anyway, i think all celiacs should have homocysteine checked and treated if needed (easy enough with b vit, tmg). homocysteine very bad thing to be high for a whole host of reasons. all the bad ones, heart attack , stroke, alzi, cancer..... one of the most annoying things about celiacs (and there are so many!) is the weight gain. i guess i stayed thin all those years being undiagnosed because i was under absorbing everything including calories. going gluten-free and the weight gain has been terrible, 30#, but i'm sure a lot more went into that (hip replacement - and years of hip pain leading to inactivity when i was previously very active, probably all related to celiacs, menopause) yada yada. i seemed to lose appetite control, like there was low glp, or leptin or whatever all those hormones are that tell you that you are full and to stop eating. my appetite is immense and i'm never full. i guess decades or more ( i think i have had celiacs since at least my teens - was hospitalized for abdominal pain and diarrhea for which spastic colon was eventually diagnosed and had many episodes of diarrhea/abdominal pain through my 20's. but that symptom seemed to go away and i related it to dairy much more so than gluten. Also my growth was stunted, i'm the only shorty in my family. anyway, decades of malabsorption and maldigestion led to constant hunger, at least thats my theory. then when i started absorbing normally, wham!! FAT!!!

Great advise there I agree with the aniexty part, and the aura migraine has I suffer both, I've also read some great books that have helped I'm going too look the one you mentioned up too thankyou for that, I find a camomile tea just a small one and a gentle wind down before bed has helped me too, I suffer from restless leg syndrome and nerve pain hence I don't always sleep well at the best of times , racing mind catches up I have decorated my whole house in one night in my mind before 🤣 diet changes mindset really help , although I have to say it never just disappears, I find once I came to terms with who I am I managed a lot better  , a misconception is for many to change , that means to heal but that's not always the case , understanding and finding your coping mechanisms are vital tools , it's more productive to find that because there is no failure then no pressure to become something else , it's ok to be sad it's ok to not sleep , it's ok to worry , just try to see it has a journey not a task 🤗
