Potty Training Issues

We are having a horrible time with our dd. She just turned 5 and has been pee trained for quite some time. However, bowel issues have been a persistant problem.

We figured that once we got her on a gluten-free diet, things would improve. But, they don't seem to be improving. So, now we are removing dairy from her diet as well.

Has anyone been through a similar situation? We are trying everything, short of punishment (I won't go that route at all) to try and help her. Nothing seems to help. :(

My younger brother, 3 1/2 years old, JUST started to use the potty. It took his doctor yelling at him to get him there! And some cool underwear!

I've heard from a couple of mothers I know that chiropractic adjustment helped, their kids were unable to feel when they had to go. Once their spine was adjusted, their nerves functioned properly and they were trained within a day.

Also, try rewards. When I trained my kids (and my daughter did the same thing), I'd give them a couple of Smarties (substitute any SMALL treat you choose to use) whenever they went. Once they went consistently, I'd 'forget' about the treat, unless they specifically asked for it, and eventually it fizzled out.

I also found that buying them cute underwear helped. Maybe take her shopping and let her choose the underwear she wants for when she has been clean for, say, a day (we don't want to soil your beautiful new panties, right?). But don't make a fuss if she then has an accident, assure her that you'll do your best to get the pretty underwear clean again. Of course, you can't promise you can do it, because sometimes, despite best efforts, it isn't possible.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
