Shampoo...

Howdy,

I'm looking for a gluten-free shampoo. I'm still on the fence that this is necessary, but I figure it's one less thing to worry about, right?

I utilize the Clan Thompson drug list (which includes shampoos) and I've reviewed the Delphi list (which seems a bit dated). It seems that everything that I've used in the past is in that 'unknown' category. For example Suave (Unilever) says to check the label. That's great, but I don't speak shampoo bottle chemical-ese. How does a person know the source of some of those polysyllabic ingredients?

Anyway, I'm currently using J&J Baby Shampoo, but it doesn't lather worth a crap. I don't need something organic, or animal safe, just safe for me and hopefully cheap.

I use Aussie Mega. Hmm... don't know if it's a "guy" shampoo, but I like it. And as far as I can tell it's gluten free. If someone knows better, please let me know.

I was using Aussie. After diagnosis I contacted the company and they said they couldn't guarantee the ingredients were gluten-free. I don't have the email here with me, so they may have worded it slightly different, but that was the jist of it. I'll check when I get home.

I'm not sure what a 'guy' shampoo is either. When I search the board for similar threads, all I find are the ladies taking about brands and products I've never heard of. Plus, I'm not too particular. So easy and cheap has always been preferred. Now it needs to be free of gluten as well.

Unilever will clearly list wheat, barley, rye, and oats. Even in personal products like shampoo

(they make all the suave and dove stuff)

Dove shampoo was gluten free the last time I checked. That's what my husband uses sometimes. As far as I know the Suave men's shampoo is also gluten free. Make sure you always double check lables. Gluten will be clearly listed on both of those products (Unilever).

Yikes, thanks for the info on Aussie. I figured Aussie "MEGA" was a manly sounding name so I guess it's a guy shampoo... ok I admit it, it wasn't the name, I just liked the smell. LOL

Guess I'll change it now. Let me know what manly shampoos you find.

I liked the smell too. Here is what the Aussie email said. Take it for what it's worth.

I'm not trying to be purposely dense, but that means they'll say the words 'wheat', 'barley', 'rye', or 'oats'? If that's the case, that's great news. Thanks.

Yep, they will clearly use the words "wheat," "oats," "barley," or "rye." I use Dove all the time, and it's made by them and not too girl-y--you may like it.

I'm wondering if anyone who's used the Aussie Mega shampoo and/or conditioner ever had a reaction on their scalp (redness, itching, burning). I emailed Aussie to find out the ingredients and received the same email back as 'cornhusker'. It must be a stock answer. I'd really like to know if my Aussie shampoo is causing my scalp to freak out.

It doesn't need to lather to clean.. seriously. Indeed many shampoos have agents added to make them lather because it makes us feel like its doing a better job.

Technically if its lathering you are using too much anyway .. companies like that.. you buy a new bottle more frequently. If you are using a non added lather shampoo then just make sure you rince more to get the particles out..

Usually what I see listed in shampoo ingredients is "wheat protein". If I'm not mistaken, that is usually the only glutenous ingredient that exists in most shampoos -- it's used to thicken the shampoo. Otherwise, all the other confusing sounding chemicall-y ingredients like "alkaline" and "sulfate" are okay.

I use the Neutogena Shampoos. They have several. The "Clean" group is the general stuff (separate shampoo and conditioner and two types of each) but they also have a line of dandruff and special needs shampoos.

Neutrogena provides a wonderful list of their gluten free items. Sorry I can't attach it as it is in my Personal PC and I just take it to the store. I haven't found many products that they make that aren't on the list as gluten-free. This includes their face creams, lotions and makeup. Around here more and more stores are starting to carry the shampoos so I don't know if they are new.

As far as getting glutened from Shampoos and etc I am now a firm believer that it is important to watch. I had been using Pantene shampoos for years but this spring started getting sick. Switched shampoos and got better, tried Pantene again and got sick. Went back and forth for a while then finally threw it away. Company said only place that may have gluten is in the fragrance and they would not guarantee anything there. Great.

After I recovered from the shampoo fiasco I finally got rid of every makeup product that might have any chance of gluten. I seem to be more sensitive now. Now I only use Neutrogena and Mary Kay.

Screwed up and used a lotion recently that I absolutely love and had used for years before going gluten free. It gave me a DM type rash. Never had that problem before with it but will have to give it to a friend I guess.

This disease demands not just a dietary change but a lifestyle change as well.

I used to use the Aussie Mega and my scalp broke out into a terrible rash. The rash was gone within 3 days of when I stopped using it. Take it for what it's worth.

Thanks so much. I've felt like I've been going crazy as being gluten-free is still very new and it's hard to determine where the gluten is sneaking in.

nannyb - do you have a list of safe Mary Kay products? I asked my friend who is a consultant and all I got was a huge list of the ingredients which was far to overwhelming to look thru! Also, do you have a list of Neutrogena products? I am just realizing that I need to use gluten-free personal care products.... Thanks! T

My son, who is a smell freak, (the teen who I never could take into a beauty salon because it stinks, I can't wear perfume, spray febreeze, etc. Like I said, "freak"), uses giovanni--you can buy it at Target and if you are close to a TJMaxx they have huge bottles for about $12 that last forever.

I seriously don't know he can stand to go into Abercrombie or Hollister.

I just saw your post about Mary Kay, I am still a rep, but have been considering quitting for the past year due to their stance on wheat in their products. Before realizing I needed to be gluten-free, I would have problems with some of their products, quit using it, then bring it back out, try again and same problems.

When I had to call the company for a list--there isn't one readily available, I had to take each ingredient that either had it or might have it and go through each and every product to discover what would be contaminated. Many of the products that I had problems with were on the list.

To make matters worse, when I tried to get replacements for the products, they wouldn't because they said that I was a rep. Apparently their lie that we matter, too, because we are customers, too, is just that, a lie.

Go to the top of the page and put in a search for MK and you will find some sites on this forum where the wheat products are listed.

Also, mk is a big offender for parabens in their products.

And yes, I am planning on quitting, I've been informing customers that 2009 will mark the end of buying from me due to MK's ingredients.

There are many drug stores brands that are just as good, if not better. Physicians Formula--organic line, Loreal.

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but I don't want anyone to be mislead into thinking MK is safe when the company really doesn't care.
