My father and I work for the same college in Riverdale, NY and my father has Celiac disease. I usually like to go to lunch with my father when I can and lately we've been finding it difficult. Does anyone know of any restaurants that cater to celiacs/gluten-free foods in Riverdale,NY (or the Bronx)?

I don't know about in Riverdale but I have eaten successfully at one of the restaurants on City Island. The waiter was completely confused and I was a bit nervous because he definately seemed to be having trouble with the concept of what I could and couldn't have but he was extremely nice and really willing to help. In the end I had a delicious meal and no reaction. :)

I forget which restaurant it was now. I want to say it was something, Seashore.

This doesn't help you for lunch, but maybe you guys can go to City Island for dinner one night.

Thank you, even though it doesn't help for lunch you're right it does help for dinner. We're always looking for places around that we can go to...so thank you, your suggestion did help.

Thank you, I'll be sure to tell my dad and check it out this week. I've been meaning to pick him up a guide because in the long wrong I think that might be better for him..do you find the restaurant guide helpful?

Yes, It is very helpful. It has also helped me when I went on vacation. I just went to Amazon and bought the cheapest copy. I think it's def. worth it.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
